    Erzählen im Gespräch ist ein ubiquitäres Kommunikationsphänomen. Die Spannbreite der Geschichten, die wir erzählen, ist groß: Wir erzählen von komischen Ereignissen, traurigen Erlebnissen, zwischenmenschlichen Verwerfungen oder aufregenden Urlaubsreisen. So groß die Spannbreite dieser Geschichten ist, so unterschiedlich sind auch die Funktionen des Erzählens. Erzählen kann eine kommunikative, eine soziale, eine psychologische, aber auch eine rhetorische Funktion haben: In Verhandlungen bringen wir Geschichten ein, um Evidenz für unsere Argumente zu schaffen. In Vorstellungsgesprächen präsentieren wir wohlkonstruierte Narrative, um ein passendes Image für uns zu beanspruchen. Im Alltag erzählen wir strategisch, um Gespräche zu initiieren, um Freunde positiv zu stimmen oder um Beziehungen aufzubauen. Insofern verwundert es, dass die Gesprächsrhetorik das Erzählen als rhetorisches Phänomen noch nicht in den Blick genommen hat. Dieses Buch geht daher der grundlegenden Frage nach, wie die Rhetorizität des Erzählens in Gesprächen systematisch beschrieben werden kann. Ansätze aus Gesprächsforschung, Sozialpsychologie und moderner Rhetoriktheorie werden hier erstmals zu einem detaillierten und umfassenden praktikablen Analysemodell für das Erzählen im Gespräch zusammengeführt. The nascent field of conversational rhetoric has not yet examined narration as a rhetorical and persuasive phenomenon. This book thus pursues the fundamental question of how to systematically describe the rhetoricity of narration in conversations. By developing a systematics of rhetorical analysis models, it attempts to combine conversation analysis, social psychology, and modern rhetoric theory.

    While the field of classics has informed and influenced the early developments of the field of psychology, these two disciplines presently enjoy fewer fruitful cross-fertilizations than one would expect. This book shows how the study of classics can help psychologists anchor their scientific findings in a historical, literary and philosophical framework, while insights of contemporary psychology offer new hermeneutic methods and explanations to classicists. This book is the first to date to offer a wide-ranging overview of the possibilities of marrying contemporary trends in psychology and classical studies. Advocating a critical dialogue between both disciplines, it offers novel reflections on psychotherapy, ancient philosophy, social psychology, literature and its theory, historiography, psychoanalysis, tragedy, the philosophy of mind, linguistics and reception.     The subject of this paper is how the epistemic limitations of individuals and their biases in reasoning affect collective decisions and in particular the functioning of democracies. In fact, while the cognitive sciences have largely shown how the imperfections of human rationality shape individual decisions and behaviors, the implications of these imperfections for collective choice and mass behaviors have not yet been studied in such detail. In particular, the link between these imperfections and the emergence of contemporary populisms has not yet been thoroughly explored. This is done in this paper by considering both fundamental dimensions of the political space: the cultural-identitarian and the socio-economic one. As has been noted, reflections on these points induce to revise the picture of democracy as a regime producing collective decisions that come out from the interaction of independent individuals well aware of their values and interests, and rationally (in the sense of rational choice theory) pursuing them. This leads to a certain skepticism towards the idealization of democracy as human rationality in pursuit of the common good, which serves to provide cover for those who profit from the distortions and biases in the policy-making processes of actual democracies. A natural conclusion of the paper is that contemporary democracies are quite vulnerable in the face of populist leaders and parties, that are systematically trying to exploit to their advantage people's imperfect rationality (using "easy arguments", emotions, stereotypes…).

    While the field of classics has informed and influenced the early developments of the field of psychology, these two disciplines presently enjoy fewer fruitful cross-fertilizations than one would expect. This book shows how the study of classics can help psychologists anchor their scientific findings in a historical, literary and philosophical framework, while insights of contemporary psychology offer new hermeneutic methods and explanations to classicists. This book is the first to date to offer a wide-ranging overview of the possibilities of marrying contemporary trends in psychology and classical studies.
