    Die altisländischen Königssagas sind einzigartige Erzählungen über Entstehung und Etablierung des skandinavischen Königtums von mythischen Anfängen bis um 1200. Sie erzählen aber keine gradlinige Erfolgsgeschichte, sondern beschäftigen sich auch mit Zufällen und Unwägbarkeiten der nordischen Geschichte und betonen die Kontingenz historischen Geschehens. Die Entstehung dieser Sagas ab dem 13. Jahrhundert rückt sie in den Kontext bedeutsamer Entwicklungen in Kontinentaleuropa. Dazu zählen die Wiederentdeckung aristotelischer Schriften, die Trennung von Philosophie und Theologie, die Kreuzzüge sowie die Herausbildung einer neuen Form der fiktionalen Literatur. Die Frage nach den treibenden Kräften historischer Entwicklung erhielt in diesem Milieu einen vormals ungekannten Stellenwert und Kontingenz und Zufall wurden zu einem zentralen Streitthema. Vor diesem Hintergrund präsentiert die vorliegende Studie eine umfassende Neulesung der Königssagas als Krisenliteratur. Sie argumentiert für die mentalitätsgeschichtliche Bedeutung von Unbestimmtheitsphänomenen in altisländischer Literatur und stellt Möglichkeiten und Grenzen narrativer Sinngebung zur fachübergreifenden Diskussion The Old Icelandic kings’ sagas are unique medieval narratives about the origins and establishment of the Scandinavian kingdom. They tell stories, but not straightforward tales of success, instead examining the diverse coincidences and uncertainties of Norse history. This volume examines the significance of this indeterminacy from the perspective of historiography, narrative theory, and the history of mentalities

    Die altisländischen Königssagas sind einzigartige Erzählungen über Entstehung und Etablierung des skandinavischen Königtums von mythischen Anfängen bis um 1200. Sie erzählen aber keine gradlinige Erfolgsgeschichte, sondern beschäftigen sich auch mit Zufällen und Unwägbarkeiten der nordischen Geschichte und betonen die Kontingenz historischen Geschehens. Die Entstehung dieser Sagas ab dem 13. Jahrhundert rückt sie in den Kontext bedeutsamer Entwicklungen in Kontinentaleuropa. Dazu zählen die Wiederentdeckung aristotelischer Schriften, die Trennung von Philosophie und Theologie, die Kreuzzüge sowie die Herausbildung einer neuen Form der fiktionalen Literatur. Die Frage nach den treibenden Kräften historischer Entwicklung erhielt in diesem Milieu einen vormals ungekannten Stellenwert und Kontingenz und Zufall wurden zu einem zentralen Streitthema. Vor diesem Hintergrund präsentiert die vorliegende Studie eine umfassende Neulesung der Königssagas als Krisenliteratur. Sie argumentiert für die mentalitätsgeschichtliche Bedeutung von Unbestimmtheitsphänomenen in altisländischer Literatur und stellt Möglichkeiten und Grenzen narrativer Sinngebung zur fachübergreifenden Diskussion The Old Icelandic kings’ sagas are unique medieval narratives about the origins and establishment of the Scandinavian kingdom. They tell stories, but not straightforward tales of success, instead examining the diverse coincidences and uncertainties of Norse history.
