    Wie verstehen Organisationen Kontexte, welche schlicht noch gar nicht existieren? Diese Dissertation untersucht mit einer Strategy as Practice Perspektive wie strategisches Sensemaking in Bezug auf zukünftige Situationen und entstehende Kontexte stattfinden kann. Während sich die existierende Forschung bereits umfänglich mit den diskursiven und kognitiven Praktiken von retrospektivem Sensemaking beschäftigt hat, fehlt weiterhin eine explizite Untersuchung der soziomamateriellen Aspekte einer proaktiven Auseinandersetzung mit der Zukunft. Ausgehend von der Langzeitstudie einer innovativen strategischen Initiative erweitert diese Dissertation die Sensemaking-Debatte mit der Beobachtung und Herleitung von strategischem Prototyping. Zentral ist hierfür die Einführung eines Modells, welches sich aus einem Prototyp-, Synthese- und Resonanzloop zusammensetzt. Das Modell für strategisches Prototyping legt die verflochtenen Praktiken einer tangiblen Zukunftsinszenierung dar und zeigt dadurch auf, wie solche Inszenierungen nicht wie bisher angenommen primär auf diskursiver und kognitiver Ebene stattfinden, sondern wesentlich von soziomateriellen Prototypen und Praktiken beeinflusst werden. Damit komplettiert diese Dissertation das diskursive Verständnis von strategischem Sensemaking mit einer ausdrücklich materiellen Perspektive, welche die Definition von materiellen Artefakten über deren alleinige Substanz hinaus zu ihrer Signifikanz für strategische Sensemakingprozesse hin erweitert. How do organizations make sense of what is not there yet? This dissertation applies a strategy as practice lens to investigate how organizations engage in strategic sensemaking about future states that are just taking form. While most research has primarily emphasized the discursive and cognitive practices involved in retrospective sensemaking, this study aims to foreground the sociomaterial side of an organization’s proactive engagement with its emerging context. Based on the longitudinal study of an innovative strategic initiative, this thesis extends the literature on strategic sensemaking with the notion of strategizing as prototyping. It develops a flow model of strategic prototyping that integrates a prototype, synthesis and resonance loop to explain the intricate practices that tangibly enact future states in the present. Moreover, it shows how such enactment is not solely cognitive and discursive but crucially influenced by sociomaterial prototypes and practices. Hence, it completes our primarily discursive understanding of strategic sensemaking with a decisively material perspective that extends our definition of strategizing artefacts beyond their substance toward their significance.
