    Ce livre déploie l’implicite d’un étrange petit carnet écrit entre 1824 et 1834, intitulé Le Salon imaginaire ou le 20e siècle de Bertrand Barère de Vieuzac, titre posé de la main de son auteur, l’ancien rapporteur du Comité de salut public de l’an II. Or, que veut, que peut un Salon imaginaire, si ce n’est parler de ce dont il n’est pas question : la Révolution française. Ces 230 notices dans l’esprit des Salon de peinture du temps brassent les époques et les lieux. Pour dire sans dire les moments critiques de l’action. L’invention de tableaux à peindre, rarement la reprise d’œuvres réalisées, permettent de ne rien forclore. L’avenir du passé persiste et nourrit la réflexion sur le tragique de la décision qu’elle soit directement politique ou non. Les situations paroxystiques dans le goût de David, leur présentification mentale évoquent les premiers rôles, les complices et les comparses, presque toujours néfastes dans un entrelacs de métaphores cryptées et d’allégories en action. Les voix du silence permettent d’opposer au présent désespérant, celui de la Restauration, la sensibilité préromantique de la seconde génération des Lumières qui fit la Révolution. L’horizon d’attente reste celui d’une humanité réconciliée avec elle-même, de là, le renvoi au xxe siècle. Cette rêverie vagabonde d’un des acteurs majeurs de la Révolution permet une authentique page d’histoire culturelle du politique.

    En 1775, à Paris, paraît un roman intitulé Le Philosophe sans prétention. L'auteur de ce « roman chimique » est Louis-Guillaume de La Folie, membre de l'Académie de Rouen et interlocuteur de quelques-uns des principaux chimistes de son temps. Du roman au mémoire académique, il n'y a qu'un pas : monsieur de La Folie invite ses lecteurs à consulter à la fois sa fiction et ses textes savants pour y trouver les démonstrations de ses théories. Son attitude est exemplaire de celle de plusieurs romanciers et scientifiques de la fin de l'Ancien Régime. Pendant que certains se méfient des « écarts de l'imagination », d'autres, au contraire, croient que le roman a quelque chose de propre à dire sur les sciences et leur avancement. Ce sont les représentations proposées par les uns et par les autres que met en lumière Joël Castonguay-Bélanger. Qui sont ces romanciers et ces scientifiques ? On croise dans Les écarts de l'imagination Buffon et Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Lavoisier et le marquis de Sade, Condorcet et Rétif de La Bretonne, Lamarck et Casanova, sans oublier quelques savants fous et des charlatans comme Mesmer. Tous ces gens se sont passionnés pour le mouvement des marées, l'ascension des premiers ballons et les théories de la reproduction. Entre boudoirs et laboratoires, ils ont voulu comprendre l'attraction des corps, au sens newtonien comme au sens libertin. Les « pyrogues aérostatiques » les intéressaient autant que les voyages au centre de la terre. Pour eux, un « amusement » pouvait être « physique » et « géométrique ». Ils ont vécu à une époque, la fin du xviiie siècle, traversée de révolutions. Celles-ci ont été politiques, scientifiques, littéraires. Le moment était venu de les embrasser d'un seul regard.

    L'étude des logiques concurrentes d'attribution du qualificatif « martyr » permet de rendre visibles les tensions qui organisent, depuis 2011, la mise en récits et en images de la révolution égyptienne. Dans une période où plusieurs référents politiques et cadres interprétatifs rivalisent pour faire autorité, les manières de dire et de montrer sont loin d'être secondaires et les modalités de désignation et de représentation des martyrs l'illustrent bien. Le conflit autour des processus de fabrique des « martyrs de la révolution », travaillés tant par des enjeux sociaux que sexués, ne se cantonne pas à l'ordre du discours mais se traduit graphiquement dans les différents espaces mémoriels relatifs à la révolution. The study of the competing logics of attribution of the term "martyr" since 2011 makes visible the tensions that organize the narratives and images of the Egyptian revolution. Different circuits of designation and representation of the "martyrs" coexist in Egyptian society, but not without conflict: they compete and confront one another, each referring to a singular idea of justice as well as a precise definition of the enemy, the one toward whom legitimate violence is conceivable and possible. Conflicts around the "martyrs" of the Egyptian revolution, which are shaped by social as well as gendered considerations, are not confined to the order of discourse, but are also translated visually into the different memorial spaces and iconographic performances relating to the revolution.
