    The volume contains 93 objects originating from workshops of the East Greek Area, the island of Cyprus, the Greek homeland and the Western Mediterranean like South Italy or Etruria.The pieces are shown to a large extent for the first time. Among the geometric pottery a fragment of a monumental crater of the Dipylon workshop is particularly noteworthy, among the Corinthian pottery two large alabastra of the Luxus-group emerge, but the Attic red-figure style is represented as the most prominent by a hydria of the Berlin painter. Der Band veröffentlicht 93 Gefäße der Archäologischen Sammlungen der Universität Graz. Er enthält Objekte aus der Bronzezeit Zyperns, der geometrischen , archaischen und klassischen Zeit Griechenlands sowie Keramik aus

    etruskischen, kampanischen, apulischen, apulisch-lukanischen und sizilischen Werkstätten. Besonders hervorzuheben sind geometrische Fragmente der Dipylon-Werkstatt, korinthische Gefäße der Luxus-Gruppe und eine Hydria des Berliner Malers.

    The voices in this book offer a multi-perspectival approach to Africa, focusing on the skills and the knowledge underpinning visual cultural expressions ranging from Akan symbolism to embodied performances by dancers and storytellers, even re-designed models of Western cars. Educators, designers, artists, critics, curators, and custodians based both in Africa and in Europe are configuring spaces for public, private, institutional as well as digital conversation – whether through pottery or portraiture, furniture or film, shoes or selfies, buildings or books. Readers are encouraged to question how African visual cultures are both ‘in’ and ‘of’; identifying and confrontational; post- and decolonial; preserved and practised; old and new; borrowed and authentic; composite and complete; rooted and soaring. Disciplines being engaged include visual culture studies, media studies, performance studies, orature, literature, art and design – as well as their histories.The editors Mary Clare Kidenda, Lize Kriel and Ernst Wagner represent three nodes in the Exploring Visual Cultures north-south collaborative network: The Technical University of Kenya, the University of Pretoria in South Africa and Munich Academy of Fine Arts in Germany.

    1899 legte Heinrich Dressel mit Band CIL XV 2, 1 die bis heute verbindliche Grundlage für das Verständnis römischer Amphoren vor. Die zum Seetransport verschiedenster Lebensmittel genutzten Behälter wurden rund um das Mittelmeer hergestellt. Dressel gelang mit seiner Studie von Amphoren vom Monte Testaccio sowie aus Grabungen bei den hortia Torlonia und den castra praetoria in Rom die maßgebliche Definition ihrer Formen, Inhalte und Provenienzen. 150 Jahre nach Dressels Arbeiten stellt sich angesichts einer prosperierenden internationalen Amphorenforschung die Frage, ob sich in seinen Untersuchungen noch Neues entdecken lässt. Ausgangspunkt ist ein Nachruf auf Dressel, der ihm – bisher in der Forschung nicht beachtet – eine besondere Methode der Publikation und Abbildung der Aufschriften auf den Amphoren attestierte. Der Band spürt anhand der in der Arbeitsstelle vorhandenen Archivalien zu den tituli picti auf Amphoren aus Rom der Arbeitsweise Dressels und seinem Wissensgewinn nach. Er zeigt exemplarisch einerseits, wie man zu Beginn der epigraphischen Grundlagenforschung im 19. Jahrhundert arbeitete, andererseits wie ein CIL-Band entstand und wie das CIL die Arbeit mit Inschriften bis heute bestimmt

Die Studien des Bandes, die aus einem Symposion des Sonderforschungsbereichs "Ästhetische Erfahrung im Zeichen der Entgrenzung der Künste" hervorgegangen sind, untersuchen nach einem Blick auf die an Gewalterfahrungen reiche Geschichte des 5. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. das Spannungsfeld von Gewalt und Ästhetik in den Bereichen von Mythos und Kult, Literatur mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der Tragödie und bildender Kunst In modern art, central importance is accorded to the diverse experiences of physical and mental violence. The resultant question of the forms of presentation of violence and the reasons for taking pleasure in tragic objects is however one which was already posed in Classical Greece in a comparable fashion. The studies in this volume arose from a symposium run by the Collaborative Research Centers on "Esthetic experience and the dissolution of artistic limits". After reviewing the history of the 5th century B.C. with its intensive experience of violence, they examine the tension between violence and aesthetics in the fields of myth, cult, and literature with particular reference to tragedy and visual art

    The voices in this book offer a multi-perspectival approach to Africa, focusing on the skills and the knowledge underpinning visual cultural expressions ranging from Akan symbolism to embodied performances by dancers and storytellers, even re-designed models of Western cars. Educators, designers, artists, critics, curators, and custodians based both in Africa and in Europe are configuring spaces for public, private, institutional as well as digital conversation – whether through pottery or portraiture, furniture or film, shoes or selfies, buildings or books. Readers are encouraged to question how African visual cultures are both ‘in’ and ‘of’; identifying and confrontational; post- and decolonial; preserved and practised; old and new; borrowed and authentic; composite and complete; rooted and soaring. Disciplines being engaged include visual culture studies, media studies, performance studies, orature, literature, art and design – as well as their histories. The editors Mary Clare Kidenda, Lize Kriel and Ernst Wagner represent three nodes in the Exploring Visual Cultures north-south collaborative network: The Technical University of Kenya, the University of Pretoria in South Africa and Munich Academy of Fine Arts in Germany.
