    This open access collection of essays examines the literary advice industry since its emergence in Anglo-American literary culture in the mid-nineteenth century within the context of the professionalization of the literary field and the continued debate on creative writing as art and craft. Often dismissed as commercial and stereotypical by authors and specialists alike, literary advice has nonetheless remained a flourishing business, embodying the unquestioned values of a literary system, but also functioning as a sign of a literary system in transition. Exploring the rise of new online amateur writing cultures in the twenty-first century, this collection of essays considers how literary advice proliferates globally, leading to new forms and genres.

    This rich cultural history set in Punjab examines a little-studied body of popular literature to illustrate both the durability of a vernacular literary tradition and the limits of colonial dominance in British India. Farina Mir asks how qisse, a vibrant genre of epics and romances, flourished in colonial Punjab despite British efforts to marginalize the Punjabi language. She explores topics including Punjabi linguistic practices, print and performance, and the symbolic content of qisse. She finds that although the British denied Punjabi language and literature almost all forms of state patronage, the resilience of this popular genre came from its old but dynamic corpus of stories, their representations of place, and the moral sensibility that suffused them. Her multidisciplinary study reframes inquiry into cultural formations in late-colonial north India away from a focus on religious communal identities and nationalist politics and toward a widespread, ecumenical, and place-centered poetics of belonging in the region

In den von der Historikerin und Soziologin Birgit Panke-Kochinke ausgewählten Unterhaltungsromanen werden zahlreiche Wege aufgezeigt, um den Herausforderungen des Älterwerdens zu begegnen und ein erfülltes Leben zu führen. Exzentrisch, unkonventionell, selbstbestimmt und freiheitsliebend – trotz aller Alterserscheinungen und Schicksalsschläge – dieses Frauenbild wird in den genrespezifischen Unterhaltungsromanen der Gegenwart transportiert. Doch welche Bedeutung hat dieses fiktive Weltbild für den realen Umgang mit dem Älterwerden? How are older female characters portrayed in popular literature of the last 20 years? What goals and dreams do they have? What challenges do they have to overcome and how do they do it? In the light novels selected by historian and sociologist Birgit Panke-Kochinke, numerous ways are shown to meet the challenges of growing older and to lead a fulfilled life. Eccentric, unconventional, self-determined and freedom-loving – despite all the signs of old age and strokes of fate – this image of older women is transported in the genre-specific entertainment novels of the present. But what significance does this fictional world view have for the real-life approach to ageing?
