    Dieser Band analysiert erstmals systematisch und interdisziplinär Geschichte, Formen, Funktionen und Auswirkungen des Scheiterns im Kontext der Wissenschaften. Das Scheitern ist in seinen unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen ein ständiger Begleiter der wissenschaftlichen Praxis. Theorien, Hypothesen oder Experimente einzelner Forscher:innen und Forschergruppen scheitern – vorläufig oder endgültig, partiell oder vollständig. Für ein adäquates Verständnis des wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisprozesses ist es daher unabdingbar, sich mit den Formen, Funktionen, Mechanismen und Auswirkungen des Scheiterns zu befassen, was bis dato allerdings kaum geschieht – weder innerhalb der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft noch in der öffentlichen Debatte. Durch diese „Vernachlässigung des Scheiterns“ in den Wissenschaften bleiben auch dessen mitunter produktive Effekte zumeist unerwähnt. Über Versuch und Irrtum führen die „Irrwege“ des Erkenntnisprozesses häufig zu Erfolgen und Lösungen.Der Band schließt diese Forschungslücke und verbindet dabei Perspektiven aus vielen Bereichen der Wissenschaftsforschung und aus der Wissenschaftspraxis.

Kuhn coined the term “paradigm shift” in 1962, and since then, it has taken on discursive power beyond the realm of the philosophy of science. This work’s examination of the cultural applications of the “paradigmatic” helps us to achieve a more precise understanding of the different ways that the term has been used. Thomas S. Kuhn prägte 1962 den Begriff des „Paradigmenwechsels“, der auch über die Wissenschaftstheorie hinaus diskursstiftende Kraft entwickelt hat. Konfigurationen des Paradigmatischen in diversen kulturellen Gefügen fordern zu einer präzisen Untersuchung der je unterschiedlichen Funktionsweisen des Terminus heraus. Der Band widmet sich der Paradigmatizität von Denk-, Handlungs- und Wahrnehmungsstilen in den Künsten und Geisteswissenschaften.

    Eine soziale Wissenschaftstheorie schlägt einen Ausweg aus den aktuellen Kontroversen in der Wissenschaftsforschung vor, der erfordert: a) den nicht unabhängigen Charakter der Wissenschaftsphilosophie anzuerkennen; b) den erkenntnistheoretischen Status der Naturwissenschaften als einziges Erkenntnisideal zu überdenken; c) sich auf der Suche nach einer neuen methodischen Erfahrungauf die Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu konzentrieren; d) aufzuhören, Fallstudien als Version der ‚neutralen Sprache der Beobachtung‘ oder als ‚entscheidende Rechtfertigung‘ einer Theorie zu betrachten; und e) die Erklärungskraft der lokalen Kontextualisierung mit der Projektion und Konstruktion zukünftiger Wirkungskontexte wissenschaftlicher Ideen zu verbinden. Die Hinwendung zur Sozialität ordnet die Wissenschaftsforschung keiner Doktrin unter; sie ist vielmehr ein ökumenischer Appell zur Maximierung philosophischer Sensibilität und Offenheit. A social philosophy of science proposes a way out of current controversies in scientific research that requires: a) acknowledging the non-independent character of the philosophy of science; b) reconsidering the epistemological status of the natural sciences as the only ideal of knowledge; c) focusing on the social sciences and the humanities in search of a new methodological experience; d) ceasing to consider case studies as a version of the ‘neutral language of observation’ or as a ‘crucial justification’ of a theory; and e) combining the explanatory power of local contextualisation with the projection and construction of future contexts of the impact of scientific ideas. The shift towards sociality does not subordinate science studies to any doctrine; it is rather an ecumenical appeal to maximise philosophical sensitivity and openness.

    I analyze the research on social-ecological resilience from the perspective of philosophy of science in three steps. First, I explore to what degree resilience research exhibits conceptual vagueness. I find a wide spectrum of research, ranging from approaches relying on a concise conceptual framework to the perspective of “resilience thinking”, which builds on a cluster of vague concepts. Second, I set out the methodological arguments in favor and against conceptual vagueness. Merging both strands of reasoning in the third step, I conclude that a trade-off between vagueness and precision exists, which is to be solved differently depending on the context of resilience research. In some contexts, resilience research benefits from conceptual vagueness while in others it depends on precision. Specifically, I argue that in “resilience thinking” the trade-off might be enhanced by a coherent restructuring of the conceptual framework.     Eine soziale Wissenschaftstheorie schlägt einen Ausweg aus den aktuellen Kontroversen in der Wissenschaftsforschung vor, der erfordert: a) den nicht unabhängigen Charakter der Wissenschaftsphilosophie anzuerkennen; b) den erkenntnistheoretischen Status der Naturwissenschaften als einziges Erkenntnisideal zu überdenken; c) sich auf der Suche nach einer neuen methodischen Erfahrungauf die Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu konzentrieren; d) aufzuhören, Fallstudien als Version der ‚neutralen Sprache der Beobachtung‘ oder als ‚entscheidende Rechtfertigung‘ einer Theorie zu betrachten; und e) die Erklärungskraft der lokalen Kontextualisierung mit der Projektion und Konstruktion zukünftiger Wirkungskontexte wissenschaftlicher Ideen zu verbinden. Die Hinwendung zur Sozialität ordnet die Wissenschaftsforschung keiner Doktrin unter; sie ist vielmehr ein ökumenischer Appell zur Maximierung philosophischer Sensibilität und Offenheit. A social philosophy of science proposes a way out of current controversies in scientific research that requires: a) acknowledging the non-independent character of the philosophy of science; b) reconsidering the epistemological status of the natural sciences as the only ideal of knowledge; c) focusing on the social sciences and the humanities in search of a new methodological experience; d) ceasing to consider case studies as a version of the ‘neutral language of observation’ or as a ‘crucial justification’ of a theory; and e) combining the explanatory power of local contextualisation with the projection and construction of future contexts of the impact of scientific ideas. The shift towards sociality does not subordinate science studies to any doctrine; it is rather an ecumenical appeal to maximise philosophical sensitivity and openness.
