    "This book examines the nature of musical performance. In it, Dorottya Fabian explores the contributions and limitations of some of these approaches to performance, be they theoretical, cultural, historical, perceptual, or analytical. Through a detailed investigation of recent recordings of J. S. Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, she demonstrates that music performance functions as a complex dynamical system. Only by crossing disciplinary boundaries, therefore, can we put the aural experience into words. A Musicology of Performance provides a model for such a method by adopting Deleuzian concepts and various empirical and interdisciplinary procedures. Fabian provides a case study in the repertoire, while presenting new insights into the state of baroque performance practice at the turn of the twenty-first century. Through its wealth of audio examples, tables, and graphs, the book offers both a sensory and a scholarly account of musical performance. These interactive elements map the connections between historically informed and mainstream performance styles, considering them in relation to broader cultural trends, violin schools, and individual artistic trajectories.

    Described by Aristotle as the most vital of senses, touch contains both the physical and the metaphysical in its ability to express the determination of being. To manifest itself, touch makes a movement outwards, beyond the body, and relies on a specific physical involvement other senses do not require: to touch is already to be active and to activate. This fundamental ontology makes touch the most essential of all senses. This volume in the Law and the Senses series attempts to illuminate and reconsider the complex and interflowing relations and contradictions between the tactful intrusion of the law and the untactful movement of touch. Compelling contributors from arts, literature and social science disciplines alongside artist presentations explore touch’s boundaries and formal and informal ‘laws’ of the senses. Each contribution unveils a multi-faceted new dimension to the force of touch, its ability to form, deform and reform what it touches. In unique ways, each of the several contributions to this volume recognises the trans-corporeality of touch to traverse the boundaries on the body and entangle other bodies and spaces, thus challenging the very notion of corporeal integrity and human being.

In this late work, Diderot delves playfully into the relationship between bodily sensation, emotion and perception, and asks his readers what it means to be human in the absence of a soul.

     

    The Atheist’s Bible challenges prevailing scholarly views on Diderot’s Éléments, asserting its contemporary philosophical importance, and prompting its readers to inspect more closely this little-known and little-studied work. In this timely volume, Warman establishes the place of Diderot’s Éléments in the trajectory of materialist theories of nature and the mind stretching back to Epicurus and Lucretius, and explores the fascinating reasons behind scholarly neglect of this seminal work. In turn, Warman outlines the hitherto unacknowledged dissemination and reception of Diderot’s Éléments, demonstrating how Diderot’s Éléments was circulated in manuscript-form as early as the 1790s, thus showing how the text came to influence the next generations of materialist thinkers.

     

    This book is accompanied by a digital edition of Jacques-André Naigeon’s Mémoires historiques et philosophiques sur la vie et les ouvrages de Denis Diderot (1823), a work which, Warman argues, represents the first publication of Diderot’s Éléments, long before its official publication date of 1875.

    Die Vermittlung von Musik und Bewegung/Rhythmik wird als Modell in einer dualen Einheit von Struktur und Dynamik dargestellt. In der Struktur im ersten Teil werden Kompetenzprofile umrissen, welche für die Arbeit mit Menschen aller Altersstufen sowie Menschen mit besonderen Bedürfnissen zuzuordnen sind. Der zweite Teil definiert die Merkmale einer kunstbasierten kreativen Unterrichtsgestaltung. Modellzeichnungen erleichtern an jedem Punkt die Orientierung im Spannungsfeld von Struktur und Dynamik. Die genaue Definierung von Zielen als auch die Möglichkeit der individuell anpassbaren Dynamik macht eine Anwendung in unterschiedlichsten Berufsfeldern möglich. Durch die Vielfalt der Ebenen werden zusätzlich zahlreiche Hinweise für die Arbeit im Bereich der Inklusion beschrieben. Angesprochen sind Lehrende und Lernende in Musik und Bewegung/Rhythmik, Musik, Künstlerischer Vermittlung, Gymnastik und Sport, sowie kunstpädagogisch Interessierte aus den verschiedensten Arbeitsgebieten. This book presents the teaching of music and movement/rhythmics as a dual-faceted model of structure and dynamics. In terms of structure, the book’s first part outlines the skills required to work with people of all ages and those with special needs. Its second part defines the characteristics of creative, arts-based teaching. Throughout the book, illustrations of the model are included to guide the reader through the interplay between structure and dynamics. The study’s clearly defined goals and their ability to be adapted to individual lesson plans allow it and its model to be used in a variety of occupations. In addition, the range of levels it addresses results in numerous suggestions for those working in the field of inclusivity. This book will appeal to teachers and students of music and movement/rhythmics, music, art, gymnastics and sport, as well as to all those working in the most diverse fields who are interested in art education.

    The windmill's labor is contingent upon the weather, upon what air masses, at any given time, overlie its landscape. Anticipatory in mood, Weather Eye Open adopts the emblem of the windmill, seeking what Merleau-Ponty calls the "inspiration and expiration of Being." The windmill serves as analogue to the perceiving subject, to the poet, whose consciousness, though rooted and partial, is yet always receptive to being energized, turned. Like open sails, the perceiver ushers the weather indoors, converting one motion, the wind, to another, the grinding burrstones. The poems in this collection pursue a similar transmutation through language, a staying open to its various weather (and whether) systems. For Sarah Gridley, language strikes at the "X" of experience: part presence and part absence, part spirit and part matter, part home and part homesickness, part harnessed and part wild.     Cet ouvrage a pour objet l'étude de l'espace romanesque tel qu'il se donne à voir dans l'œuvre à travers l'ancrage géographique du récit et la configuration spatiale du monde qu'il dépeint. Dans la mesure où, de par sa nature littéraire, le monde représenté consiste uniquement en la mention et en la description de lieux - le reste ressortissant à la narration et donc essentiellement à l'action -, l'espace romanesque constitue, de fait, toute la réalité dans laquelle se meuvent les personnages : loin de fournir le seul cadre de l'intrigue, il est au fondement de l'univers fictionnel. Comment le constitue-t-il ? Quel sens donner dès lors aux notions d'espace mais aussi d'univers, de lieu ou de pays dans le cadre du roman et comment les décliner pour l'étude de la topographie fictionnelle ? Une telle mise en question des relations qui unissent espace du roman et univers de la fiction conduit en outre à s'interroger sur la manière dont la spatialisation conditionne la généricité du texte. Établissant la notion de chronotope comme configuration spatio-temporelle originale, Bakhtine y voyait un élément définitoire du genre du roman dont elle permet de saisir les manifestations conjoncturelles. Or, le chronotope, bien qu'il lie indissociablement espace et temps, privilégie l'approche historique. De quelle manière, peut-on se demander, les coordonnées spatiales de l'univers romanesque déterminent-elles son inscription sur la carte des genres ? Autant de questions fondamentales auxquelles une quinzaine de chercheurs des deux côtés de l'Atlantique et un écrivain féru de géographie imaginaire tâchent d'apporter des éléments de réponse, pour comprendre la fabrique topographique et l'inscrire dans la diachronie.
