    This book presents a study of material images and asks how an appreciation of the making and unfolding of images and art alters archaeological accounts of prehistoric and historic societies. With contributions focusing on case studies including prehistoric Britain, Scandinavia, Iberia, the Americas and Dynastic Egypt, and including contemporary reflections on material images, it makes a novel contribution to ongoing debates relating to archaeological art and images. The book offers a New Materialist analysis of archaeological imagery, with an emphasis on considering the material character of images and their making and unfolding. The book reassesses the predominantly representational paradigm of archaeological image analysis and argues for the importance of considering the ontology of images. It considers images as processes or events and introduces the verb ‘imaging’ to underline the point that images are conditions of possibility that draw together differing aspects of the world. The book is divided into three sections: ‘Emergent images’, which focuses on practices of making; ‘Images as process’, which examines the making and role of images in prehistoric societies; and ‘Unfolding images’, which focuses on how images change as they are made and circulated. The book features contributions from archaeologists, Egyptologists, anthropologists and artists. The contributors to the book highlight the multiple role of images in prehistoric and historic societies, demonstrating that archaeologists need to recognise the dynamic and changeable character of images.

    In Ontological Terror Calvin L. Warren intervenes in Afro-pessimism, Heideggerian metaphysics, and black humanist philosophy by positing that the "Negro question" is intimately imbricated with questions of Being. Warren uses the figure of the antebellum free black as a philosophical paradigm for thinking through the tensions between blackness and Being. He illustrates how blacks embody a metaphysical nothing. This nothingness serves as a destabilizing presence and force as well as that which whiteness defines itself against. Thus, the function of blackness as giving form to nothing presents a terrifying problem for whites: they need blacks to affirm their existence, even as they despise the nothingness they represent. By pointing out how all humanism is based on investing blackness with nonbeing—a logic which reproduces antiblack violence and precludes any realization of equality, justice, and recognition for blacks—Warren urges the removal of the human from its metaphysical pedestal and the exploration of ways of existing that are not predicated on a grounding in being.

    Der Fremdheit des Anderen antwortet ein ontologisches Modell von Gelassenheit als Resignativität. Gelassenheit meint Abdankung des Selbst und dessen Öffnung auf den Anderen hin. Weil sich die Differenz von Subjektivität und Alterität in der Subjektivität selbst als Dialektik von Geber und Empfänger zeigt, ist von uns als Subjekten ein Handeln als Streben und Lassen gefordert. Die Zwiefalt der Tat aber setzt die Einheit eines Seins voraus, welche die Bedingung der Verpflichtetheit der Subjektivität durch die Alterität und des Einsatzes der Subjektivität für die Alterität darstellt. Diese Bestimmtheit des Seins bildet das Fundament einer Hermeneutik, welche die Aufgabe der Selbstverständigung von Subjektivität als Selbstbegrenzung fasst. The strangeness of the Other is answered by an ontological model of serenity as resignativity. Serenity means abdication of the self and its opening towards the Other. Because the difference of subjectivity and alterity shows up in subjectivity itself as a dialectic of giver and receiver, we as subjects are required to act as striving and letting go. But the duality of action presupposes the unity of being, which is the condition of the obligatedness of subjectivity through alterity and of the commitment of subjectivity for alterity. This determinateness of being forms the foundation of a hermeneutics which grasps the task of self-understanding of subjectivity as self-limitation.

    There are ghosts. At least, in "Hamlet" there are. This is an example of a fictional truth, of something true in a fiction. Or so it seems. For, once we broaden our view to all kinds and realms of fiction our ordinary notions are challenged, and intriguing philosophical questions arise. Are there really any fictional truths? How can they be determined? Is everything just interpretation? Can anything be fictional? Could you be part of a fiction? Et cetera. The philosophical literature on fiction typically focusses on the semantics of fictional discourse and the ontology of fictional objects. In contrast, this study explores the nature of fictional truth by analyzing its conceptual structure and by unfolding some of its most important conceptual connections. After reviewing the field and identifying core elements that any theory of fictional truth must accommodate Christian Folde investigates several interrelated issues central to the on-going debates. Building on a clear account of fictional content and a wealth of examples the author offers novel solutions to various problems at the intersection of fictional truth, interpretation, and narration. The book thereby makes contributions to aesthetics, metaphysics and literary theory, among other things, and is thus both of philosophical and interdisciplinary value.

    This book concerns the soul/body problem in Plato and Aristotle. Established as well as early career scholars actually working on Plato and Aristotle explore - under different points of view as well as through original readings and interpretations - the manifold dimensions involved in the conception of the soul/body relation articulated by the two greatest founders of Western Thought. The book starts with an exploration of the relation between cause and matter in Plato and Aristotle, then some papers on Plato’s theory of soul and body are presented, which involve new advancements in the research about Platonic epistemology, moral and political theory, metaphysics of mind, even about his religious and ‘theological’ view. Some papers on Aristotle’s model follow, which are focused on his so-called “hylomorphism” as an alternative view to Plato’s alleged “dualism”: the ontology of the soul/body relation in Aristotle is explored, as well as the implications of this theoretical framework for his theory of knowledge, his moral theory, his cognitive psychology. Finally, two papers critically assess the philosophical connections between Aristotle’s hylomorphism and its modern and contemporary Wirkungsgeschichte.

    This book concerns the soul/body problem in Plato and Aristotle. Established as well as early career scholars actually working on Plato and Aristotle explore - under different points of view as well as through original readings and interpretations - the manifold dimensions involved in the conception of the soul/body relation articulated by the two greatest founders of Western Thought. The book starts with an exploration of the relation between cause and matter in Plato and Aristotle, then some papers on Plato’s theory of soul and body are presented, which involve new advancements in the research about Platonic epistemology, moral and political theory, metaphysics of mind, even about his religious and ‘theological’ view. Some papers on Aristotle’s model follow, which are focused on his so-called “hylomorphism” as an alternative view to Plato’s alleged “dualism”: the ontology of the soul/body relation in Aristotle is explored, as well as the implications of this theoretical framework for his theory of knowledge, his moral theory, his cognitive psychology. Finally, two papers critically assess the philosophical connections between Aristotle’s hylomorphism and its modern and contemporary Wirkungsgeschichte.

    Der Fremdheit des Anderen antwortet ein ontologisches Modell von Gelassenheit als Resignativität. Gelassenheit meint Abdankung des Selbst und dessen Öffnung auf den Anderen hin. Weil sich die Differenz von Subjektivität und Alterität in der Subjektivität selbst als Dialektik von Geber und Empfänger zeigt, ist von uns als Subjekten ein Handeln als Streben und Lassen gefordert. Die Zwiefalt der Tat aber setzt die Einheit eines Seins voraus, welche die Bedingung der Verpflichtetheit der Subjektivität durch die Alterität und des Einsatzes der Subjektivität für die Alterität darstellt. Diese Bestimmtheit des Seins bildet das Fundament einer Hermeneutik, welche die Aufgabe der Selbstverständigung von Subjektivität als Selbstbegrenzung fasst The strangeness of the Other is answered by an ontological model of serenity as resignativity. Serenity means abdication of the self and its opening towards the Other. Because the difference of subjectivity and alterity shows up in subjectivity itself as a dialectic of giver and receiver, we as subjects are required to act as striving and letting go. But the duality of action presupposes the unity of being, which is the condition of the obligatedness of subjectivity through alterity and of the commitment of subjectivity for alterity. This determinateness of being forms the foundation of a hermeneutics which grasps the task of self-understanding of subjectivity as self-limitation

    Was ist und was kann Kunst? Die zentralen Fragen der philosophischen Ästhetik sind nur anti-objektivistisch zu beantworten. Doch was das heißt, das zeigt sich erst in der Begegnung historisch-systematischen Denkens mit der Kunst.Andrea Sakoparnig plädiert dafür, im Ausgang von der Frage nach der Objektivität des Ästhetischen die beiden zentralen Fragen der philosophischen Ästhetik neu zu stellen. Dazu rekonstruiert und diskutiert sie den in der philosophischen Tradition formulierten Einwand vom objektivistischen Missverständnis, den sie auf seine Wurzeln hin reflektiert und mit drei paradigmatischen Kunstwerken der Avantgarde konfrontiert. Damit begibt sie sich auf den Weg zu einer neuen Ontologie des Kunstwerks, die den heterogenen Plural der Seins- und Erscheinungsweisen von Kunst zum Ausgang nimmt.
