This paper addresses the promotion of multilingualism-sensitive teaching competencies (MTC), an objective that has received little attention in in-service language teacher training and respective research. We will elaborate on the role of pluri- and multilingualism in language education and explore the demands for in-service training programmes of MTC. Using a DBR-approach, in our project “The Next Level” , we aim at developing and evaluating design principles for an online in-service language teacher training programme fostering MTC. The project concept and its design principles include a differentiation of the MTC construct and will serve to describe the structure and components of the programme as well as its practical implementation. Within the project, we will also investigate the development of teachers’ MTC through the training programme. First research results will provide insights into teachers’ MTC at the beginning of the programme. Peer Reviewed

Teleworking parents can better monitor and help their children with online learning. In this paper, I test whether parents' teleworkability affected children's online learning during Covid school closures. I use panel data from Invalsi, which includes the results of standardized tests given to all Italian students in grades 2 and 5 and parental characteristics. I compare changes in children's performance from grade 2 to grade 5 along two dimensions: whether they experienced Covid school closures between grade 2 and grade 5 and whether their parents work in teleworkable occupations. I also exploit variations in the length of Covid school closures and the use of online learning resources across Italian regions. My results show that one hundred school closure days widens the gap between children of teleworkable and nonteleworkable parents by 0.04 in language tests and 0.01 in maths tests.

COVID-19 shifted schools and colleges to online instruction with little causal evidence of outcomes. In the fall of 2020, we randomized 551 West Point students in a required Introductory Economics course across twelve instructors to either an online or in-person class. Final grades for online students dropped by 0.215 standard deviations; a result apparent in both assignments and exams and largest for academically at-risk students. A post-course survey finds that online students struggled to concentrate in class and felt less connected to their instructors and peers. We find that the shift to online education had negative results for learning.

This research examined the impacts of peer perseverance on learning outcomes and investigated how this influence varies with the partners' skill levels, either higher or similar to the subjects, across two experiments resembling online learning platforms. Study 1 recruited active English learners, while Study 2 involved subjects who had not engaged in English studies for more than six months. The results of both experiments revealed negative rather than positive peer effects. The subjects ceased studying earlier and displayed lower performance when learning with less perseverant peers, compared to when studying alone. This pattern was observed when paired with similarly skilled peers in Study 1 and with higher-skilled peers in Study 2. Further analysis indicated that the negative peer effects predominantly originated from subjects with lower levels of motivation. Additionally, it was shown that social proximity could foster positive effects when peers possess similar skills and higher perseverance levels.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and the resulting falls in demand due both to uncertainty and policy interventions such as lockdowns, "social distancing", and travel restrictions are having a severe impact on Asian economies and hence on Asian households. These negative impacts come through a variety of channels, including loss of employment or reduced working hours, loss of sales and income of a household business, inability to travel to work, increased need to stay at home to look after children or sick household members, higher prices and/or lack of availability of staple items, reduced access to schooling, etc. In order to better understand these impacts, we carried out computer-assisted telephone interviews of households in eight ADB developing member countries: Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Our empirical results suggest that various household characteristics, including household income class (before COVID-19), household demographic factors, and COVID-19-induced factors such as having at least one person who lost their job or being located in lockdown areas, all affected the likelihood of a decline in income. In all countries, having at least one person who lost their job or had reduced working time increases the likelihood of experiencing financial difficulties by 17 percentage points. About 27% of children who stopped attending school could not fully participate in online learning programs due to weak/insufficient internet connections and a lack of digital devices. Two COVID-19-related factors - having at least one person who lost their job or had working hours reduced and experiencing financial difficulties - significantly affect the intensity of online classes taken by children in an average household.
