    Due to its theoretical and educational significance within the language learning process, the study of L2 motivation has been an important area of second language acquisition research for several decades. Over the last few years L2 motivation research has taken an exciting new turn by focusing increasingly on the language learner’s situated identity and various self-perceptions. As a result, the concept of L2 motivation is currently in the process of being radically reconceptualised and re-theorised in the context of contemporary notions of self and identity.     In this volume researchers from Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America employ a variety of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches in their exploration of the links between identity, motivation, and autonomy in language learning. On a conceptual level the authors explore issues related to agency, metacognition, imagination, beliefs, and self. The book also addresses practice in classroom, self-access, and distance education contexts, considering topics such as teachers’ views on motivation, plurilingual learning, sustaining motivation in distance education, pop culture and gaming, study abroad, and the role of agency and identity in the motivation of pre-service teachers. The book concludes with a discussion of how an approach which sees identity, motivation, and autonomy as interrelated constructs has the potential to inform theory, practice and future research directions in the field of language teaching and learning

    Rund 14 Millionen Deutsche musizieren regelmäßig in ihrer Freizeit. Viele sind Mitglied in einem Blasorchester oder einer Blaskapelle, und ihr ehrenamtliches Engagement leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur regionalen (Musik-)Kultur. Doch was ist die Motivation dahinter? In einer Online-Befragung von 214 hessischen Amateurmusikern und 123 Amateurfußballern geht Jennifer Nowak dieser Frage auf den Grund. Die Autorin beleuchtet ausgewählte Konzepte der Motivationspsychologie und präsentiert anschließend die Ergebnisse ihrer Online-Befragung zu Motivation, Persönlichkeit und Flow-Erleben. Ihre daraus abgeleiteten Hypothesen sowie ein Modellvorschlag zur Motivation des ehrenamtlichen Musizierens führen zu relevanten Ergebnissen für Theorie und Praxis. Around 14 million people in Germany regularly play music in their spare time. Many of them are members of wind orchestras or brass bands, who thus make an important contribution to regional (music) culture. However, what are their incentives in this respect? In an online survey of 214 amateur musicians and 123 amateur football players in Hesse, Jennifer Nowak addresses this question in depth. She highlights selected concepts in motivational psychology and subsequently presents the results of her online survey in terms of incentives, personality and flow state. Both the hypotheses she derives from these results plus a blueprint she suggests for encouraging playing music in one’s spare time reveal relevant findings for theory and practice in this regard.

    Welche Funktion hat ein Ehrgeiz, der auch dann nicht erlischt, sobald Selbsterhaltung sichergestellt ist? Lässt sich überhaupt trennscharf zwischen ›gesundem‹ und ›krankhaftem‹ Ehrgeiz unterscheiden? Diese Fragen stellen sich, seit Hesiod zwischen der guten und der bösen Eris differenzierte, und seit Aristoteles –der Lehrer Alexanders des Großen – feststellte, dass die gute Mitte zwischen fehlendem und exzessivem Ehrgeiz ›keinen Namen hat‹. Der über die Selbsterhaltung hinausschießende, ›brennende Ehrgeiz‹ wurde in der Philosophie nur gelegentlich reflektiert, in der Weltliteratur, der Erfolgssoziologie, der Spieltheorie und der Psychoanalyse hingegen eindringlich beschrieben. Er erscheint in evolutionsbiologischer Perspektive sinnlos, latent feindselig bzw. autodestruktiv. Die Alltagssprache registriert den destruktiven Aspekt, wenn sie in einer drastischen Wendung davon spricht, jemand sei ›von Ehrgeiz zerfressen‹ wie von einem Raubtier, einer Säure oder einem unkontrollierbar gewordenen Feuer. Diesem ›brennenden‹, potentiell ›zerfressenden‹ Ehrgeiz, der als das Verlangen nach Unsterblichkeit exklusiv menschlich zu sein scheint, wird seit der Antike mit Ambivalenz und Scheu begegnet. Ihm gilt das primäre Interesse des vorliegenden Buches.

    Comment les pensées créatives émergent-elles dans le champ de notre conscience ? Qu'est-ce qui pousse un individu à s'engager dans une activité ou à changer de comportement ? Notre style de vie peut-il ralentir les effets délétères du vieillissement cérébral ? Une vingtaine de cognitivistes français, belges et allemands tentent de répondre à ces questions et apportent ainsi un nouvel éclairage sur la créativité, la motivation et le vieillissement cognitif. La première partie de l'ouvrage est consacrée à l'étude des idées créatives, des facteurs qui peuvent faciliter leur émergence, et de la façon dont elles sont générées par l'esprit et le cerveau humain. La deuxième partie de l'ouvrage s'intéresse davantage aux processus motivationnels qui sont à l'origine de la production des comportements humains et déterminent leur intensité et leur direction. Les auteurs illustrent leurs propos dans différents domaines de la vie sociale tels que le choix des formations et des professions ou la pratique des activités physiques et sportives. Enfin, la troisième partie de l'ouvrage fait le point sur l'état actuel des connaissances sur le vieillissement cognitif. Il est notamment démontré que les habitudes de vie sont des facteurs déterminants du bien vieillir qui peuvent prolonger la préservation de l'autonomie des seniors et améliorer leur qualité de vie. L'approche qui a été choisie pour avancer sur ces trois questions sociétales est résolument pluridisciplinaire puisqu'elle s'appuie sur différentes sciences telles que la philosophie, les neurosciences cognitives, la psychologie cognitive et la psychologie sociale.

    Welche Funktion hat ein Ehrgeiz, der auch dann nicht erlischt, sobald Selbsterhaltung sichergestellt ist? Lässt sich überhaupt trennscharf zwischen ›gesundem‹ und ›krankhaftem‹ Ehrgeiz unterscheiden? Diese Fragen stellen sich, seit Hesiod zwischen der guten und der bösen Eris differenzierte, und seit Aristoteles - der Lehrer Alexanders des Großen - feststellte, dass die gute Mitte zwischen fehlendem und exzessivem Ehrgeiz ›keinen Namen hat‹. Der über die Selbsterhaltung hinausschießende, ›brennende Ehrgeiz‹ wurde in der Philosophie nur gelegentlich reflektiert, in der Weltliteratur, der Erfolgssoziologie, der Spieltheorie und der Psychoanalyse hingegen eindringlich beschrieben. Er erscheint in evolutionsbiologischer Perspektive sinnlos, latent feindselig bzw. autodestruktiv. Die Alltagssprache registriert den destruktiven Aspekt, wenn sie in einer drastischen Wendung davon spricht, jemand sei ›von Ehrgeiz zerfressen‹ wie von einem Raubtier, einer Säure oder einem unkontrollierbar gewordenen Feuer. Diesem ›brennenden‹, potentiell ›zerfressenden‹ Ehrgeiz, der als das Verlangen nach Unsterblichkeit exklusiv menschlich zu sein scheint, wird seit der Antike mit Ambivalenz und Scheu begegnet. Ihm gilt das primäre Interesse des vorliegenden Buches
