    This handbook is based on the project "Österreichische Kinder- und Jugendbuchautorinnen" (Austrian Women

    Writers of children's literature), which was defined as part of the project "biografiA. datenbank und lexikon

    österreichischer frauen" (database of austrian women, www.biografia.at), localised on the Institute for

    Science and Art in Vienna. In the years 1999 to 2002 more than 800 women writers could be described

    biographically. Among them are many women, who wrote only one single book for children, there are some

    illustrators who decided to write also the text for their books and there are also some wellknown writers for

    Children's books, like Christine Nöstlinger, Renate Welsh, Friederike Mayröcker and many others. There ist no

    time-limitation, so we have a good overlook of the whole production of children's literature in Austria. Austria

    means by that way to be born in this land or to live here for more than 10 years.

    Many of the living authors sendt their curriculum vitae and also many experts on this field helped to fill up the

    entries. But there are great differences between the portraits of the women, differences in the length of the articles,

    in the presenting details of the lifes and also differences in their way to live, in their political behaviour and so on.

    Many of the authors had to flee from austria during the time of nationalsocialism because of their jewish origin or

    their political background. Some of them are nearly forgotten. They were murdered or had to emigrate in a land

    with another language, the chance to be able to continue the writing career was very small. But we know some

    women who had the luck to continue the career. Alex Wedding is one of them, she founded with some other

    writers like Auguste Lazar the proletarian children's literature. Hertha Pauli is one of the women whose career

    began in her exile, she began to write books for children in the USA. The biographs can be read as a part of

    austrian culture, as a piece of our own history.

    It is the intention of this handbook to encourage scientists to study more about the austrian women-writers of

    children's books and to discuss their publications. Das vorliegende Handbuch entstand aus dem Modulprojekt "Österreichische Kinder- und Jugendbuchautorinnen"

    das als Teilbereich des Projekts "biografiA. datenbank und lexikon österreichischer frauen"

    (http://www.biografia.at), 1999-2002 am Institut für Wissenschaft und Kunst bearbeitet wurde. Ziel dieses zeitlich

    nicht eingegrenzten Modulprojektes war die biografische Darstellung all jener österreichischen Frauen, die

    mindestens ein Buch für Kinder bzw. Jugendliche veröffentlicht haben. Der Zeitraum wurde offen gelassen, um einen möglichst breiten Überblick über das kinderliterarische Schaffen von

    Frauen bieten zu können. Die Aufnahme der jeweiligen Autorinnen orientierte sich am Kategorienschema der Datenbank biografiA.

    Umfangreiche Recherchen und Kontakte mit ExpertInnen, Autorinnen und NachlassverwalterInnen ermöglichten die Erstellung von Lebensläufen auch wenig bekannter Schriftstellerinnen.

    Der zeitliche Bogen spannt sich von Antonie Wutka , die mit ihrer "Encyclopädie für die weibliche Jugend" aus dem Jahre 1812 zum ersten Mal in Österreich ein Schriftwerk auf den Markt brachte, das sich hauptsächlich an junge Leserinnen richtete, bis zu zeitgenössischen Autorinnen. Das als Grundlagenwerk konzipierte Handbuch, das zu weiteren Arbeiten auf dem Gebiet der Kinder- und Jugendliteraturforschung, der Exilforschung und der Frauenbiografieforschung anregen möchte, enthält auch sehr viele vom Holocaust betroffene Autorinnen.

    Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts durchläuft das Schreiben über die Shoah in der französischen Literatur Transformationsprozesse. Soazig Aaron, Frédéric Brun, Philippe Claudel und Jean-Pierre Gattégno verwandeln den Überlebenden samt seiner Dualität in eine literarische Figur und legen einen klaren Fokus auf das Sehen als Wahrnehmung und Metapher. Damit verbinden sie eine kritische Selbstspiegelung des Schreibprozesses und der Versprachlichungsstrategien. Die faktische Seite der Shoah rückt zugunsten einer luziden Gesellschafts- und Menschheitskritik in den Hintergrund. Mit dieser doppelten Spur, der Spur der Opfer und der Spur des Bewusstseins um menschliche Abgründe, regen die Texte gesellschaftliche Veränderungen an. At the beginning of the 21st century, writing about the Shoah in French literature is undergoing transformation processes. Soazig Aaron, Frédéric Brun, Philippe Claudel and Jean-Pierre Gattégno transform the survivor, including his duality, into a literary figure and place a clear focus on seeing as perception and metaphor. They combine this with a critical self-reflection on the writing process and on the strategies of verbalisation. The factual aspects of the Shoah fade into the background in favour of a lucid critique of society and humanity. With this double trace, the trace of the victims and the trace of the awareness of human abysses, the texts stimulate social changes.

    Seit der Öffnung des Landes in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bewegte sich Japan rasant auf dem Weg zur industrialisierten Weltmacht. Das dort seit den 1890er Jahren durch Mori Ogai aus Europa 'eingeführte' romantische Syndrom jedoch verzauberte insbesondere die jungen Intellektuellen und trieb sie zur Suche nach der japanischen kulturellen Identität an. Ziel war es, nach innen die gesamte Bevölkerung zu integrieren und nach außen das Land vom »Westen« unterscheidbar zu machen - und zwar paradoxerweise im Geist der europäischen Romantik. Takemitsu Morikawa geht diesen bemerkenswerten Entwicklungen auf den Grund und zeichnet die Entstehung und die Kanonisierung des vermeintlichen Selbstbildes des modernen Japan nach. After the opening of the country in the middle of the 19th century, Japan quickly moved towards becoming an industrialized world power. But the romanticist syndrome, imported from Europe by Mori Ogai since the 1890s, especially enchanted young intellectuals and drove their search of a Japanese cultural identity. The goal was, internally, to integrate the entire population, and externally, to make the country distinguishable from the »West« - paradoxically, in a spirit of European Romanticism. Takemitsu Morikawa investigates these remarkable developments and retraces the rise and canonization of the alleged self-image of modern Japan.

Die unheroische Schilderung über das Leben und Sterben einer Gruppe deutscher Soldaten an der Westfront konterkarierte jegliche romantisierende Perspektive auf den Krieg und rief von hasserfüllter Ablehnung bis zu euphorischer Vereinnahmung starke Reaktionen hervor – nicht nur in Remarques Heimatland, sondern rund um den Globus. Anhand der zeitgenössischen Presserezeption von Im Westen nichts Neues in Deutschland und den USA stellt Nikos Späth dar, warum der Bestseller und seine Verfilmung durch Hollywood derart die Geister bewegten und sich in beiden Ländern diametral entgegengesetzte Diskurse entwickelten. When Erich Maria Remarque published a novel about the frontline experience in the First World War in 1929, he and his book All Quiet on the Western Front quickly became famous – people even spoke about “the case Remarque”. The unheroic account of the life and death of a group of German soldiers on the Western Front counteracted any romanticized perspective on the war, provoking strong responses from hateful rejection to euphoric monopolizing – not only in Remarque’s homeland, but around the globe. Based on contemporary press coverage, Nikos Späth examines the reception of All Quiet on the Western Front in Germany and the United States. He illustrates why the bestseller and its Hollywood movie adaptation moved so many people and evoked diametrically opposed discourses in both countries.
