    The internet has fundamentally transformed society in the past 25 years, yet existing theories of mass or interpersonal communication do not work well in understanding a digital world. Nor has this understanding been helped by disciplinary specialization and a continual focus on the latest innovations. Ralph Schroeder takes a longer-term view, synthesizing perspectives and findings from various social science disciplines in four countries: the United States, Sweden, India and China. His comparison highlights, among other observations, that smartphones are in many respects more important than PC-based internet uses. Social Theory after the Internet focuses on everyday uses and effects of the internet, including information seeking and big data, and explains how the internet has gone beyond traditional media in, for example, enabling Donald Trump and Narendra Modi to come to power. Schroeder puts forward a sophisticated theory of the role of the internet, and how both technological and social forces shape its significance. He provides a sweeping and penetrating study, theoretically ambitious and at the same time always empirically grounded.The book will be of great interest to students and scholars of digital media and society, the internet and politics, and the social implications of big data.

    How are users influenced by social media platforms when they generate content, and does this influence affect users’ compliance with copyright laws? These are pressing questions in today’s internet age, and Regulating Content on Social Media answers them by analysing how the behaviours of social media users are regulated from a copyright perspective. Corinne Tan, an internet governance specialist, compares copyright laws on selected social media platforms, namely Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter and Wikipedia, with other regulatory factors such as the terms of service and the technological features of each platform. This comparison enables her to explore how each platform affects the role copyright laws play in securing compliance from their users. Through a case study detailing the content generative activities undertaken by a hypothetical user named Jane Doe, as well as drawing from empirical studies, the book argues that – in spite of copyright’s purported regulation of certain behaviours – users are 'nudged' by the social media platforms themselves to behave in ways that may be inconsistent with copyright laws.

    "The objective of this book is to outline how a radically democratic politics can be reinvigorated in theory and practice through the use of the internet. The author argues that politics in its proper sense can be distinguished from anti-politics by analyzing the configuration of public space, subjectivity, participation, and conflict. Each of these terrains can be configured in a more or less political manner, though the contemporary status quo heavily skews them towards anti-political configuration. Using this understanding of what exactly politics entails, this book considers how the internet can both help and hinder efforts to move each area in a more political direction. By explicitly interpreting contemporary theories of the political in terms of the internet, this analysis avoids the twin traps of both technological determinism and technological cynicism.

    Raising awareness of what the word ‘politics’ means, the author develops theoretical work by Arendt, Rancière, Žižek and Mouffe to present a clear and coherent view of how in theory, politics can be digitized and alternatively how the internet can be deployed in the service of trulydemocratic politics."

    Dutch literature "Vraag iemand naar de zin van het leven en hij antwoordt met het verhaal van zijn leven." Met deze uitspraak van de Hongaarse schrijver György Konrad opende 'Nauwgezet en Wanhopig' van Wim Kayzer - een legendarische tv-serie vooral bekend bij literatuurliefhebbers. In de vele manieren waarop we zin en betekenis zoeken blijkt het narratieve een belangrijke rol te spelen. Soetaert presenteert een (b)logboek waarin hij de vraag 'wat is een verhaal' vervangt door 'wat wordt er over verhalen in verhalen verteld'? Het antwoord zoekt hij in boeken en films, in hoge en lage cultuur, in woord en beeld, in computergames en soaps... En last but not least: op het Internet als een nieuwe verhalenmachine. Kortom: vraag iemand naar de zin van verhalen, en hij vertelt nog een verhaal. De jaarlijkse Tiele-lezing, waarin actuele thema's uit de boekwetenschap worden belicht, wordt georganiseerd door de Dr P.A. Tiele-Stichting in samenwerking met de Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Den Haag.     The book gives an intriguing insight into how young people in Estonia, twenty years after the establishment of democracy, perceive their own role as citizens. It does so in a theoretical framework that stresses the embeddedness of the civic experiences in a media-dominated environment, thus closely linking civic and media experiences. Based on the analysis of both qualitative interview data and a relatively new method of using the internet as a complementary tool for engaging with open-ended diaries, the study explores the extent to which young citizens experience the media as being interwoven with their everyday lives and, in fact, constitutive of their social reality as citizens. With its particular focus on young Estonians, i.e. on a generation that has been brought up in a context of rapid political, economic and social change and that is well-known for its fascination with new communication technologies, the book is a valuable contribution to the growing international research on media and civic experiences.

    Auf dem Weg von Gutenberg zu Google waren zuerst Werkzeuge und Verfahren des Edierens von elektronischen Medien bestimmt, heute dominieren Internet und digitale Publikationsmöglichkeiten auch Präsentation und Rezeption entstehender Editionen. Ausgehend vom medialen Paradigmenwechsel unserer Zeit stand die Frage nach der Bedeutung historischer wie aktueller Medienwandel und Medienwechsel für die jweilige Situation und Perspektive des Edierens im Mittelpunkt der im Februar 2010 in Frankfurt am Main als Kooperation von Goethe-Universität und Freiem Deutschen Hochstift durchgeführten Editoren-Tagung. Die im vorliegenden Band versammelten Beiträge erörtern die Konsequenzen medialer Umbrüche sowohl für Grundkategorien und Selbstverständnis der Textwissenschaften als auch für die konkrete editorische Arbeit. Im Zentrum stehen die Folgen des aktuellen Medienwandels; es geht um den Einsatz des digitalen Mediums als Medium der Edition selbst und um die vielfältigen Verschiebungen die sich in der Folge inzwischen beobachten lassen: von der Integration heterogener medialer Materialien (Bilder, Töne, bewegte Bilder) bis hin zur Auflösung der herkömmlichen Grenzen zwischen sammelnden, erschließenden und edierenden Tätigkeiten

    Alors que le marché du livre numérique est encore balbutiant en France et représente moins de 1% du chiffre d'affaires des éditeurs, les stratégies commerciales mises en œuvre par les acteurs traditionnels de la chaîne du livre et par de nouveaux entrants permettent d'esquisser différentes configurations des marchés du livre numérique. La dématérialisation induit des mutations qui auront des conséquences sur l'ensemble de la filière : disparition et apparition d'acteurs, perte, création et déplacement de valeur, restructuration industrielle. Les enjeux de marché, soumis à certaines contraintes techniques comme celle de l'interopérabilité entre normes de fichiers et matériels de lecture, dépendent aussi du maintien ou de l'évolution de la législation régissant le commerce du livre en France : droits de propriété intellectuelle, fiscalité, mode de fixation du prix. Cette photographie cherche à synthétiser les futurs possibles de l'économie du livre numérique. Whilst the market for electronic books (or e-books) is still stuttering into life in France and represents less than 1% of publishers' turnover, the commercial strategies being implemented by both traditional and new players in the book publishing industry are laying the foundations for various possible publishing industry configurations. Dematerialisation is leading to changes which are likely to affect whole industry, e.g. the emergence and the disappearance of various industry players, the loss, creation and transfer of value and industry restructuring. The market faces issues such as technical constraints, i.e. interoperability between file formats and reader hardware. It is also subject to legislative support or change governing the publishing trade in France, covering such matters as intellectual property rights, taxation, price-fixing methods, etc. This snapshot aims to summarise the possible futures of the e-book economy.

    Aux amateurs de littérature numérique, le Web offre en deux clics l'œuvre et son envers, son mystère et une partie de ses clés, le spectacle et sa machinerie intellectuelle ou technique. Qu'on l'appelle «cyberlittérature» ou «littérature numérique», cette littérature n'aurait pas de réalité sans le support numérique et le dispositif informatique grâce auxquels l'œuvre est produite, lue et souvent agie. L'ambition de cet ouvrage est de faire entrer le lecteur dans l'univers des œuvres numériques, en interrogeant au passage le modèle classique de l'édition. Les auteurs ont choisi d'observer deux dispositifs collectifs : autrement dit, deux lieux sur le Web où deux communautés d'acteurs livrent simultanément quelques-unes des clés essentielles de leur raison sociale dans le domaine littéraire en ligne. Du territoire occupé sur le réseau au geste d'une écriture qui revendique son originalité, en passant par la possible émergence d'un modèle inédit d'édition, il ne s'agit pas moins que de se demander si, finalement, ce que l'on désigne par «littérature numérique» n'est pas l'expression d'un nouveau paradigme pour la littérature.
