Some authorities, schools and teachers look upon it as a problem, an obstacle to the achievement of national educational goals, while for others it offers new opportunities. Successive PISA reports have laid bare the relative lack of success in addressing the needs of diverse school populations and helping children develop the competences they need to succeed in society. The book is divided into three parts that deal in turn with policy and its implications, pedagogical practice, and responses to the challenge of diversity that go beyond the language of schooling.     Eccentricity is a stereotype of Englishness. Yet despite its popularity, it has not merited much academic investigation. The present study offers a theoretically grounded overview of the emergence, structures and artistic productions resulting from eccentricity. It starts with its prehistory in Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance before pinpointing its emergence in the seventeenth century. From then onwards it serves to negotiate cultural dissent and make it productive. What goes hand in hand with eccentricity is the individual, not as essentially given, but as relational. In the same way that eccentricity has textual and intertextual origins, eccentrics, despite their seeming singularity, form patterns. These can be used as cultural ‘fertiliser’ or as façades in the case of present-day British politicians. The study offers a re-reading of English Literature and Culture from the margins as well as theoretical outlooks in the directions of Gender and Postcolonial Studies.

    Das hier präsentierte Modell einer Energetik der Film-Rezeption reperspektiviert die Deleuzesche Kinophilosophie anhand der Leib-, Zeit- und Geistphilosophie Henri Bergsons und legt damit ein System der strukturellen und ästhetischen Einwirkung des Films auf die Rezeption dar. Das Film-Bild ist als Material und in seiner Bewegung geeignet, nicht nur die Sinne zu ergreifen und eine im emphatischen Sinne energetische Erfahrung herzustellen. Die sich über die Zeit entfaltenden Figurationen prägen sich ästhetisch ein, werden in der Erinnerung integriert und damit in der Rezeption als sinnhafte Strukturen rekonstruiert und erlebt. Die Energie der Zeichen besteht im Anschluss an Charles Sanders Peirce in der sinnlichen sowie in der relationalen Aufladung mit Reizen, Beziehungen und Bedeutungen. Die Mechanismen einer solchen Energetik werden an der Rezeption des Films exploriert, lassen sich aber auf andere Medien und Situationen der Rezeption oder des Begreifens übertragen.

    Explanative Modelle für die Integration von Fremdwörtern haben eine Vielzahl an hauptsächlich soziolinguistisch erfassbaren Faktoren ermittelt, die Grad, Richtung und Verlauf von Kontakterscheinungen beeinflussen. In diesen soziofaktoriellen Modellen der Integration wurde bislang Mehrsprachigkeit als weiterer Faktor schlicht beigeordnet. Im Rahmen dieses Artikels wird die Hypothese präsentiert, dass Mehrsprachigkeit keinen parallelen Integrationsfaktor unter vielen darstellt – stattdessen können die mannigfaltigen sozialen Faktoren nur auf der Basis zumindest rudimentärer Mehrsprachigkeit zum Tragen kommen. Diese angenommene zentrale Rolle der Mehrsprachigkeit (als Grundvoraussetzung statt als optionaler Faktor) wird im Anschluss empirisch analysiert. Dazu wird eine experimentelle Studie durchgeführt, die die Kompetenz Monolingualer und Bilingualer zur Produktion von Fremdelementen vergleicht. Anhand von messphonetischen und morphologischen Variablen zum Kontakt zwischen Italienisch und Deutsch wird dabei mikrostrukturell und statistisch belegt, dass Mehrsprachigkeit die grundlegende Voraussetzung dafür ist, die Struktur des Gebersystems beibehalten zu können, also umgekehrt nicht ins Nehmersystem integrieren zu müssen. Das zeigt: Monolinguale integrieren automatisch, nur für Bilinguale sind soziale Faktoren überhaupt relevant. Varietätenweite Wandelprozesse werden durch kumulative Effekte niedriger Mehrsprachigkeit und/oder entsprechender sozialer Faktoren bei hoher Mehrsprachigkeit ausgelöst. Explanatory models for the integration of foreign words have identified a variety of mainly sociolinguistically determinable factors that influence the degree, direction and course of contact phenomena. In these socio-factorial models of integration, multilingualism has simply been treated as one of many equally important factors. This article presents the hypothesis that multilingualism does not simply represent one factor among many – instead, the multiple social factors need to be backed by at least rudimentary multilingualism. This assumed central role of multilingualism (as a basic condition rather than as an optional factor) is subsequently empirically analyzed. An experimental study comparing the ability of monolinguals and bilinguals to produce foreign elements is presented. On the basis of phonetic and morphological variables in Italian-German contact, microstructural and statistical evidence shows that multilingualism is the basic prerequisite for being able to keep the structure of the original language – or rather not having to integrate into the recipient system. This shows that monolinguals need to integrate automatically, while social factors are only relevant for bilinguals. Change processes in varieties result from cumulative effects of low multilingualism and/or social factors in case of high multilingualism.

    Along with the worldwide growing mobility and migration, the scientific studies and political-public debates are increasingly more concerned with the questions of motivation and manner in which modern information and communication technology is used by people with a migration background as well as the resulting consequences for the individual as a user on the one hand, and the ethno-cultural groups in migration, the home and residence societies, on the other hand. The researches focus on the questions about the importance of the use of the mentioned media technologies in the development of transcultural / -national communication / interaction relations across national borders and in the (re-)formation of cultural identities. Another central issue is the question of the role of media use in everyday orientation and multipole integration as well as participation efforts. Based on these goals, this empirical-comparative dissertation study, which is based on interviews with around 930 people, in particular explores the possible interrelationships between affiliation with ethnic and ethno-religious minorities in the context of migration and the motivation of the use of classical and, especially, new media by the people living in Switzerland with a migration background from Turkey - under specific consideration respectively differentiation according to ethnic and religious subgroups of Alevis, Assyrian, Kurds and Turks.
