    This study traces the connection of infinity and Levinasian ethics in 21st-century fiction. It tackles the paradox of how infinity can be (re-)presented in the finite space between the covers of a book and finds an answer that combines conceptual metaphor theory with concepts from classical narratology and beyond, such as mise en abyme, textual circularity, intertextuality or omniscient narration. It argues that texts with such structures may be conceptualised as infinite via Lakoff and Núñez’s Basic Metaphor of Infinity. The catachrestic transfer of infinity from structure to text means that the texts themselves are understood to be infinite. Taking its cue from the central role of the infinite in Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics, the function of such ‘fictions of infinity’ turns out to be ethical: infinite textuality disrupts reading patterns and calls into question the reader’s spontaneity to interpret. This hypothesis is put to the test in detailed readings of four 21st-century novels, David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods, Ian McEwan’s Saturday and John Banville’s The Infinities. This book thus combines ethical criticism with structural aesthetics to uncover ethical potential in fiction

Aus zeichentheoretischer Perspektive ließe sich jedoch entgegenhalten: »Nichts« ist flüchtiger als ein Zeichen und jene Vorstellung eine bloße Behauptung. Vor diesem paradoxen Hintergrund unternimmt die Monographie den Versuch, systematisch innersprachlichen Verfahren nachzugehen, die dazu eingesetzt werden, Informationen möglichst dauerhaft festzuhalten. Sie stützt sich dabei auf literarische Texte zwischen 1755 und 1821 sowie deren historische Ko- und Kontexte. Es gelingt ihr so, im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie der Semiotik erstmals eine Typologie vorzulegen, die weit über die Zeit um 1800 und die Literatur hinaus zeichenhafte Verfahren im Dienste der »Verewigung« zu beschreiben vermag. Semiotics of Eternalization At the interface of literary and cultural studies as well as semiotics, this monograph systematically examines intralinguistic procedures intended to record information for eternity. It succeeds, for the first time, in presenting a typology that describes semiotic procedures in the pursuit of »eternalization« that are not only limited to the period around 1800. An extended English general survey and summary is included

    This article discussed the question ‘Does God speak through the language of mathematics?’ For centuries, mathematicians with different religious backgrounds would have answered this question in the affirmative. Due to changes in mathematics from the 19th century onwards, this question cannot be answered as easily as it used to be. If one regards mathematical concepts as creations of the human mind, it is difficult to argue that mathematical formulae exist in a divine mind. The article argued that there were traces of the divine in mathematics. Six kinds of traces were explained: (1) the existence of indisputable truth, (2) the existence of beauty, (3) the importance of community, (4) rational speaking about infinity, (5) the discovery that speaking about unseen and abstract objects is reasonable and (6) the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics. In practice, traces (1), (2) and (6) are probably the most convincing. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article is very much interdisciplinary as it combines mathematics and theology, especially the philosophy of mathematics and systematic theology.

    »Schrift besitzt die Macht, zu verewigen.« Diese Vorstellung begleitet Schriftzeichen seit ihrer Erfindung und hat bis heute nichts von ihrer Wirkmächtigkeit eingebüßt. Aus zeichentheoretischer Perspektive ließe sich jedoch entgegenhalten: »Nichts« ist flüchtiger als ein Zeichen und jene Vorstellung eine bloße Behauptung. Vor diesem paradoxen Hintergrund unternimmt die Monographie den Versuch, systematisch innersprachlichen Verfahren nachzugehen, die dazu eingesetzt werden, Informationen möglichst dauerhaft festzuhalten. Sie stützt sich dabei auf literarische Texte zwischen 1755 und 1821 sowie deren historische Ko- und Kontexte. Es gelingt ihr so, im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie der Semiotik erstmals eine Typologie vorzulegen, die weit über die Zeit um 1800 und die Literatur hinaus zeichenhafte Verfahren im Dienste der »Verewigung« zu beschreiben vermag. Semiotics of Eternalization At the interface of literary and cultural studies as well as semiotics, this monograph systematically examines intralinguistic procedures intended to record information for eternity. It succeeds, for the first time, in presenting a typology that describes semiotic procedures in the pursuit of »eternalization« that are not only limited to the period around 1800.
