    Before the mid-nineteenth century there were few subjects in the altarpiece tradition of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland in which the central figures accompanying Christ were female. Seldom used or new motifs involving female characters now emerged behind the altar. Most of the altarpieces with central women figures were painted in Finland at the turn of the twentieth century by the artist Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin (1837-1916). In the nineteenth century Frosterus-Såltin was the only artist in Finland who realized the motif of ‘Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene’ in her altarpieces. In her final representation of the theme, the altarpiece in the church of the Finnish Jepua commune, she chose an unusual approach to the motif. My interest in the subject lies in the motif’s affective nature - the ways in which altarpieces in general have been actively used to evoke feelings. Moreover, I consider the influence that Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin, a significant agent in Finnish sacral art, had on consolidating the position of women’s agency in the Finnish altarpiece tradition. I examine the motif in relation to the cultural and political atmosphere of the era, especially the changing gender roles and the understanding of women’s social agency as the women’s movement emerged.

    Giorgione remains the central figure in the scientific discussion dealing with Venetian painting of the age, and accordingly the amount of literature on him is exuberant. The state of scientific discussion which harks back well into the 19th century, proves to be very heterogeneous, a selection of statements proves to be inapt as to serve as a basis for a further critical discussion. The outcome of all this is a general dissent, caused by the poor state of sources and the comparatively small number of secured works. In consequence, we are confronted with a constant struggle of attributions, increasing and decreasing in number, and a host of dates, often contradictory. Es gibt kaum einen anderen italienischen Maler, der die kunstgeschichtliche Forschung so entzweit hat wie Giorgione. Die Ursachen dieser Uneinigkeit beruhen auf einer dürftigen Quellenlage sowie auf dem Umstand, dass nur wenige Werke des Künstlers als gesichert gelten.

    Die uns umgebenden Dinge haben mehr Bedeutung, als einfach nur Gegenstände zu sein. Sie sind Bestandteil eines Geflechts von Praxen, Ikonographien, Verweisen, Konstellationen und Arrangements. Mit bzw. durch Dinge/n werden wir erst zu dem, was wir sind. Dieser Umstand wird in der Gestaltung politischer Bildungsprozesse weitgehend ignoriert. Stattdessen wird weiterhin von einem Repräsentationsverhältnis ausgegangen, welches die Dinge in einem passiven Sosein auf Distanz hält. Damit bleibt die Konstitution politischer Subjektivität im Medium gesellschaftlicher Materialität (politische Bildungen), im Denkbild rein kognitiver Entwicklung gebannt. Um den Herausforderungen der Gegenwart begegnen zu können, darf politische Bildung aber nicht allein im Rahmen eines didaktisierten Wissensaufbaus schematisiert werden. Politische Bildungen müssen auch als Artikulationen demokratischer Subjektivität in einer gesellschaftlich-politischen Materialität entfaltet werden. They are interwoven within a network of practices, inscriptions, iconographies, references and constellations. Only by means of and together with objects do we become what we are. This fact is widely ignored when educational processes are didactically designed. Instead, political education is still based on a representative relationship which keeps objects at bay in a passive state. In this way, however, the constitution of political subjectivity in the network of social materiality—political education—remains confined to the concept of a purely cognitive development. To meet the challenges of our present time, political education should no longer be schematised within the framework of didactically prepared knowledge building. Political education also has to be contrived as a performative statement of democratic subjectivity in the network of social and political materiality.     Die Kulturgeschichte des frühen Mittelalters ist geprägt durch den Besitz, den Raub, die Zurschaustellung und das Verteilen von Gold. Disziplinenübergreifend ist die Semantisierung von Gold in der Kultur dieser Epoche bislang nicht untersucht.Die hohe kulturelle Bedeutung des Goldes lässt sich an archäologischen Funden wie Grabbeigaben oder Schätzen ablesen. Auch die überlieferten Zeugnisse der Heldendichtung zeigen den besonderen Stellenwert des Metalls an: Helden tragen goldene Rüstungsgegenstände, Herrscherinnen sind goldgeschmückt, und der Raub von Gold hat fatale Folgen. Angesichts dieses Befundes wird die Frage nach der kulturellen Bedeutung des Goldes in der europäischen Heldendichtung des frühen Mittelalters erstmals gestellt. Der vorliegende Band unternimmt dies im Dialog mit der Archäologie und im Rückgriff auf Methoden und Ergebnisse der historischen Narratologie, Anthropologie und Geschichtswissenschaft und stellt die Frage nach der Bedeutung der goldenen Gegenstände im Kontext der erzählten Welten der volkssprachigen und lateinischen Literaturen Mittel- und Nordeuropas.Die Übersicht über die hier diskutierten Texte lässt eine Eigentümlichkeit erkennen: Geraubt oder präsentiert oder geschenkt werden Artefakte aus Gold. Im Unterschied zur aus dem archäologischen Befund ermittelbaren kulturellen Praxis wird kaum davon erzählt, dass goldene Gegenstände geschmolzen, gemahlen und neu verarbeitet werden. Der Wert der in der Literatur imaginierten Gold-Dinge ist nicht nur von ihrem Grundstoff abhängig, sondern mehr noch von der spezifischen Geschichte der Herkunft und Weitergabe des Artefakts

    L'étude des logiques concurrentes d'attribution du qualificatif « martyr » permet de rendre visibles les tensions qui organisent, depuis 2011, la mise en récits et en images de la révolution égyptienne. Dans une période où plusieurs référents politiques et cadres interprétatifs rivalisent pour faire autorité, les manières de dire et de montrer sont loin d'être secondaires et les modalités de désignation et de représentation des martyrs l'illustrent bien. Le conflit autour des processus de fabrique des « martyrs de la révolution », travaillés tant par des enjeux sociaux que sexués, ne se cantonne pas à l'ordre du discours mais se traduit graphiquement dans les différents espaces mémoriels relatifs à la révolution. The study of the competing logics of attribution of the term "martyr" since 2011 makes visible the tensions that organize the narratives and images of the Egyptian revolution. Different circuits of designation and representation of the "martyrs" coexist in Egyptian society, but not without conflict: they compete and confront one another, each referring to a singular idea of justice as well as a precise definition of the enemy, the one toward whom legitimate violence is conceivable and possible. Conflicts around the "martyrs" of the Egyptian revolution, which are shaped by social as well as gendered considerations, are not confined to the order of discourse, but are also translated visually into the different memorial spaces and iconographic performances relating to the revolution.

Mit bzw. durch Dinge/n werden wir erst zu dem, was wir sind. Dieser Umstand wird in der Gestaltung politischer Bildungsprozesse weitgehend ignoriert. Stattdessen wird weiterhin von einem Repräsentationsverhältnis ausgegangen, welches die Dinge in einem passiven Sosein auf Distanz hält. Damit bleibt die Konstitution politischer Subjektivität im Medium gesellschaftlicher Materialität (politische Bildungen), im Denkbild rein kognitiver Entwicklung gebannt. Um den Herausforderungen der Gegenwart begegnen zu können, darf politische Bildung aber nicht allein im Rahmen eines didaktisierten Wissensaufbaus schematisiert werden. Politische Bildungen müssen auch als Artikulationen demokratischer Subjektivität in einer gesellschaftlich-politischen Materialität entfaltet werden. They are interwoven within a network of practices, inscriptions, iconographies, references and constellations. Only by means of and together with objects do we become what we are. This fact is widely ignored when educational processes are didactically designed. Instead, political education is still based on a representative relationship which keeps objects at bay in a passive state. In this way, however, the constitution of political subjectivity in the network of social materiality—political education—remains confined to the concept of a purely cognitive development. To meet the challenges of our present time, political education should no longer be schematised within the framework of didactically prepared knowledge building. Political education also has to be contrived as a performative statement of democratic subjectivity in the network of social and political materiality.     This article explores the role of social and political agendas in the shaping of the development of contemporary Last Judgment iconography in Ukraine. Specifically, it focuses on a controversial recently painted icon of the Last Judgment in the town of Chervonohrad (Lviv region), on which universal Christian themes and motifs are interwoven with representations of historical and contemporary events and national sensibilities. Many episodes on the mural arose as a response to military aggression by the Russian Federation. The most controversial of these depicts scenes of Hell, where the main figure resembles Russian President Vladimir Putin burning in fire along with other anonymous sinners and totalitarian symbols. Although the mural may be observed as non-canonical or even absurd, it is enthusiastically accepted by church attendees and members of the laity. This paper highlights both religious and secular reactions to the mural. It examines the social and political dimensions of this religious piece, its iconographic elaboration, and its function as a piece of propaganda.

    Die Abstraktes und Fernes vergegenwärtigende, Vergangenes memorierende und Wahrheit beteuernde Funktion von Bildlichkeit steht in Verbindung mit Fiktionalem vor besonderen Herausforderungen und kann poetologische Funktionen übernehmen. Der vorliegende Band untersucht in exemplarischen Fallstudien den Stellenwert von Bildlichkeit im Artusroman. Zu den berühmtesten selbstreflexiven Szenen der europäischen Artusromane zählt die Betrachtung der Bildergeschichte von Lancelots Ehebruchsliebe durch König Artus im ›Lancelot‹: Der Roman spiegelt sich selbst im Bild und deckt damit eine außerordentliche Nähe des Genres zur Bildlichkeit auf. Sie reicht von pikturalen Neuschöpfungen der Romanstoffe in Bilderzyklen oder Darstellungen von Einzelszenen arthurischer Romane auf Gebrauchsgegenständen über sehr unterschiedliche Text-Bildverhältnisse in illustrierten Handschriften und Drucken bis hin zu plastisch-bildhaft beschriebenen Szenen in Artusromanen, die in der Regel auf bekannte ikonographische Muster verweisen. Oftmals werden im Text auch Bilder oder andere Kunstgegenstände beschrieben. Solche ›Text-Bilder‹ können eine handlungsbestimmende Funktion erhalten, als intertextuelle Referenzen dienen oder poetologische Reflexionen anstoßen Images make what is absent present and validate it.     Art = New Vision. This formula shaped the avant-garde. With moving images abruptly expanding the boundaries of the visible world, new printing techniques triggering a pictorial turn in graphic art, and literature becoming almost inseparable from visual media we still regard the avant-garde as heyday for modernisms obsession with the eye. But what are the blind spots of this optocentrism? Focusing on the gestures of giving, touching, showing and handcrafting, this study examines key scenes of tactile interaction between subject and artifact. Hand movements, manual maneuvers and manipulations challenge optics and expose the crises of a visually dominated perspective on the arts. The readings of this book call for a revision of an optically obscured aesthetics and poetics to include haptic experience as an often overlooked but pivotal part of the making as well as the perception of literature and the arts

    Die Kulturgeschichte des frühen Mittelalters ist geprägt durch den Besitz, den Raub, die Zurschaustellung und das Verteilen von Gold. Disziplinenübergreifend ist die Semantisierung von Gold in der Kultur dieser Epoche bislang nicht untersucht.Die hohe kulturelle Bedeutung des Goldes lässt sich an archäologischen Funden wie Grabbeigaben oder Schätzen ablesen. Auch die überlieferten Zeugnisse der Heldendichtung zeigen den besonderen Stellenwert des Metalls an: Helden tragen goldene Rüstungsgegenstände, Herrscherinnen sind goldgeschmückt, und der Raub von Gold hat fatale Folgen. Angesichts dieses Befundes wird die Frage nach der kulturellen Bedeutung des Goldes in der europäischen Heldendichtung des frühen Mittelalters erstmals gestellt. Der vorliegende Band unternimmt dies im Dialog mit der Archäologie und im Rückgriff auf Methoden und Ergebnisse der historischen Narratologie, Anthropologie und Geschichtswissenschaft und stellt die Frage nach der Bedeutung der goldenen Gegenstände im Kontext der erzählten Welten der volkssprachigen und lateinischen Literaturen Mittel- und Nordeuropas.Die Übersicht über die hier diskutierten Texte lässt eine Eigentümlichkeit erkennen: Geraubt oder präsentiert oder geschenkt werden Artefakte aus Gold. Im Unterschied zur aus dem archäologischen Befund ermittelbaren kulturellen Praxis wird kaum davon erzählt, dass goldene Gegenstände geschmolzen, gemahlen und neu verarbeitet werden. Der Wert der in der Literatur imaginierten Gold-Dinge ist nicht nur von ihrem Grundstoff abhängig, sondern mehr noch von der spezifischen Geschichte der Herkunft und Weitergabe des Artefakts

    Twitch Plays Pokémon presented a unique opportunity: sixty to one hundred twenty thousand players aimed to complete a single run of Pokémon: Red Version. Oppositional identities, based on differences in strategy were created, and a player-driven narrative began to form, codified by specific Pokémon and items. Rather than employing a secular theme to navigate a secular space, the moment of confrontation was imbibed with religiosity.This paper seeks to account for the construction of a communal narrative, revolving around the alignment of religious themes with Pokémon through two sources: the transcript of the chat where religious identities were assigned to Pokémon; and the subreddit of the same. The framework of this paper combines threads of research on social media, seriality, anthropology of globalized phenomenon and the specifics of internet gaming and connectivity to analyze the primary sources of this phenomenon.
