    Theater direction is today more unfettered, the sphere of artistic possibilities more open, than ever before. Creative chaos on all sides? Not really. Denis Hänzi investigates how old ideals and new realities in the German-language theatrical landscape are deriving from the interplay between individual working methods and institutional configurations. Extrapolating on Bourdieu's concept of habitus/field, he develops a theory of charisma which provides an innovative approach to the analysis of contemporary artistic worlds. That the »order of the theater« bears visible traits of a culture of success which appears to consolidate the male dominance in directing is just one of the illuminating findings that makes this book fascinating for theater-makers and theater-goers alike. Die Theaterregie ist heute so entfesselt, der künstlerische Möglichkeitsraum so offen wie nie. Kreatives Chaos allenthalben? Nicht wirklich. Denis Hänzi untersucht, wie aus dem Wechselspiel von individuellen Arbeitsweisen und institutionellen Arrangements, alten Idealen und neuen Realitäten das Gefüge der deutschsprachigen Theaterlandschaft hervorgeht. Mit einer charismatheoretischen Erweiterung des Bourdieu'schen Habitus/Feld-Konzepts wird ein innovativer Ansatz zur Analyse gegenwärtiger Kunstwelten formuliert.

A simple Google search reveals the sheer bottomless well of “hysterical” discussions on diverse topics such as the #metoo movement, Trumpianism, border wars, Brexit, transgender liberation, Black Lives Matter, COVID-19, and climate change, to name only a few. Against the backdrop of such recent deployments of hysteria in popular discourse––particularly as they emerge in times of material and hermeneutic crisis––Performing Hysteria re-engages the notion of “hysteria”.

     

    Performing Hysteria rigorously mines late 20th- and early 21st-century (primarily visual) culture for signs of hysteria. The various essays in this volume contribute to the multilayered and complex discussions that surround and foster this resurgent interest in hysteria––covering such areas as art, literature, theatre, film, television, dance; crossing such disciplines as cultural studies, political science, philosophy, history, media, disability, race and ethnicity, and gender studies; and analysing stereotypical images and representations of the hysteric in relation to cultural sciences and media studies.     This collaborative arts research project compares the landmark discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork discovered in 2009, with an imagined hoard from present day pre-adolescent girls. The collaborators constructed a subterranean installation, generated speculative historical documents, collected and embellished social networking “artifacts,” and photographed the entire process. In addition to dealing with the notion of a medieval hoard as a signifier of a medieval warrior as both hero and anti-hero, this artbook, or work of futurist archaeology, addresses contemporary issues relating to gender, youth culture, bullying, adolescent development, iconicity, status symbols, and additional contemporary tween issues.

Inspired by the rhyming encyclopedias of the Middle Ages, Strouse transforms each of Butler’s sentences into Seussian couplets.

     

    This performative repetition of Chapter 1 of Butler’s Gender Trouble, “Subjects of Sex/Gender/Desire,” deconstructs Butler’s deconstruction. Relishing in the campiness of rhyme and meter—in the bodily pleasures of form—Strouse’s Gender Trouble Couplets, Volume 1 is an imitation for which there is no original.     Wives and Wanderers in a New Guinea Highlands Society brings to the reader anthropologist Marie Reay's field research from the 1950s and 1960s on women’s lives in the Wahgi Valley, Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Dramatically written, each chapter adds to the main story that Reay wanted to tell, contrasting young girls’ freedom to court and choose partners, with the constraints (and violence) they were to experience as married women. This volume provides readable ethnographic material for undergraduate courses, in whole or in part. It will be of interest to students and scholars of gender relations, anthropology and feminism, Melanesia and the Pacific. The material in this book, which Reay had written by 1965 but never published, remains startlingly contemporary and relevant. Marie Olive Reay was a social anthropologist who did research in Australian Indigenous communities and in the Wahgi Valley in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Employed at The Australian National University from 1959 to 1988 when she retired, Reay passed away in 2004. In 2011 this manuscript was found in her personal papers, reconstructed and edited by Francesca Merlan, augmented here by an additional introduction by eminent anthropologist of the Highlands, and of gender, Marilyn Strathern. Had this manuscript appeared when Reay apparently completed it in its present form – around 1965 – it would have been the first published ethnography of women’s lives in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Die untersuchten Texte erfassen nicht nur die relativ junge Gattung des Romans; denn indem sie Geschlechterimagines für ihre Zwecke operationalisieren, bringen sie zugleich die Kategorie der Männlichkeit hervor: Romantheorien sind Geschlechtertheorien.Indem die Studie einschlägige Romantheorien von Huet und Blanckenburg über F. Schlegel und Hegel bis Vischer und Lukács in den Blick nimmt, geht sie dem Aufwand nach, der in den Texten betrieben wird, um Roman und Männlichkeit gegenseitig zu stabilisieren – und zeigt, wie fragil Männlichkeit auch an und in Romantheorien arbeitet.

    The 'Other' Martyrs is a collection of essays that center on a diverse thematic array of women's martyrdom across periods and cultures. Ranging from Russia to Iraq, from Iran to Canada, from Greece to the lands of early, and spanning medieval and modern periods, each essay focuses on how women's sacrifice and martyrdom have been represented to diverse ends. In these, the main discovery is the 'how' of martyrdom and sacrifice, not just the 'what.' Each author unpacks the rhetoric, narrative strategies, and structure of their case to delve with rigor into the nature and function of women's sacrifice, and a wide range of theoretical and philological underpinnings informs the analyses. Readers will gain fresh insights into post-Soviet moments of cultural crises and gender construction through case studies of Pussy Riot and the film Everybody Dies But Me, War propaganda in early to mid-twentieth century Canada, women's oratory skills in early Islamicate culture, the imagery of women and children in Iranian official history, the construction of influential Greek martyrdom, to name some examples. While each essay easily stands alone because of its specific inquiry, the corpus offers a much-needed transnational, transperiod panorama of the many shapes and implications of women's sacrifice as seen in official and non-official discourse. The scholars are all leading authorities in their fields and therefore bring the most up-to-date and rigorous analyses to their inquiries.

    Branded products opened a new poetological playing field for literature. This study shows how the works of E. Edel, T. Mann, I. Keun, W. Koeppen, and C. Kracht reflected the material, semiological, and cultural theory aspects of consumer culture and transformed them into literary devices. The volume considers a range of issues, from product catalogs to fetishization, including capitalist circulation processes and the fascination with surface. It uses close readings to open the reader's eyes to the cultural poetological dimension in literary texts and the conditions of culture in capitalism Markenwaren bilden nicht das profane ,Andere' der Kultur. Vielmehr eröffnen sie der Literatur seit mehr als hundert Jahren neue poetologische Spielräume. Die Studie zeigt, wie Werke von Edmund Edel (Berlin W., 1906), Thomas Mann (Der Zauberberg, 1924), Irmgard Keun (Das kunstseidene Mädchen, 1932), Wolfgang Koeppen (Tauben im Gras, 1951) und Christian Kracht (1979, 2001) materielle, semiologische und kulturtheoretische Aspekte der Konsumkultur reflektieren und in literarische Verfahren überführen: von Warenhauskatalogen und Fetischisierungen bis zu kapitalistischen Zirkulationsprozessen und der Faszination glänzender Oberflächen. Die close readings öffnen den Blick für die kulturpoetologische Dimension literarischer Texte und für die Bedingungen von Kultur im Kapitalismus.     Moral und Politik stehen in der römischen Literatur in einem engen Vorstellungszusammenhang; sittlicher Niedergang wird als Element wahrgenommen, das die politische Ordnung destabilisiert. Intensiv zeigt sich dieses Phänomen in der Literatur des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. in der Thematik von Sexualmoral und Geschlechterrollennormen. Der Diskurs um Männlichkeit und effeminatio begegnet nicht nur in der Invektive und der Liebeselegie, sondern auch in der Historiographie, im Epos und in lyrischen Werken. Lässt sich im Zuge des politischen Umbruchs ein Wandel der Konzeptionen von Sexualmoral und Geschlechterrollen erkennen? Wie sind Vorstellungen von Sexualmoral, Geschlechterrollen und politischer Stabilität konkret miteinander verknüpft? Textpassagen von Lucilius, Cicero, Sallust, Catull, Vergil, Horaz, Livius, Properz, Tibull und Ovid werden untersucht, um diesen Fragen nachzugehen. Es deutet sich an, dass begleitend zur Krise der Republik auch die traditionellen Geschlechterkonzeptionen aufbrechen und mit der Konsolidierung der Ordnung zu festen Normen zurückkehren

    »Houses, Secrets, and the Closet« investigates the literary production of masculinities and their relation to secrets and sexualities in 18th and 19th century fiction. It focusses on close readings of Gothic fiction, Sensation Novels, and tales by Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, William Godwin, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins, and Henry James. The study approaches these texts through the lens of domestic space, gender, knowledge, and power. This approach serves to investigate the cultural roots of the 'closet' - the male homosexual secret - which reveals a more general notion of male secrecy in modern society. The study thus contributes to a better understanding of the cultural history of masculinities and sexualities.

    In numerous fields of science, work, and everyday life, humans and machines have been increasingly entangled, developing an ever-growing toolbox of interactions. These entanglements affect our daily lives and pose possibilities as well as restrictions, chances as well as challenges. The contributions of this volume tackle related issues by adopting a highly interdisciplinary perspective. How do digitalization and artificial intelligence affect gender relations? How can intersectionality be newly understood in an increasingly internationally networked world? This volume is a collection of contributions deriving from the “Interdisciplinary Conference on the Relations of Humans, Machines and Gender” which took place in Braunschweig (October 16–19, 2019). It also includes the keynotes given by Cecile Crutzen, Galit Wellner and Helen Verran.In unserer hochtechnisierten Welt verschwimmen die Grenzen zwischen Mensch und Maschine in zahlreichen Bereichen der Wissenschaft, der Arbeit und des Alltagslebens immer mehr.
