    Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die Frage, was in der Zeit von 1450 bis 1750 als Dichtung begriffen wurde. Der erste Teil ist den Begriffen der Nachahmung und Gleichnishaftigkeit gewidmet und rekonstruiert die Rezeptionsgeschichte der aristotelischen "Poetik", deren Nachahmungsbegriff erst sichtbar werden konnte, als die Definition der Dichtung über Gleichnishaftigkeit, Exemplarizität oder ähnliche Konzepte in den Hintergrund zu treten begann. Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts ersetzt der Begriff der Fiktion den Begriff der Nachahmung. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit rekonstruiert die Geschichte des Enthusiasmus, der von den neuplatonisch beeinflussten Autoren um 1500 noch als göttliche Inspiration verstanden wird. Aus theologischen Gründen wird mit der Reformation die Möglichkeit einer göttlichen Inspiration bestritten. Inspiration ist jetzt nur noch eine Metapher für Begabung. Daraus entwickelt sich die Deutung des Enthusiasmus als einer besonderen "Stimmung" des lyrischen Dichters. Damit schreibt die Arbeit die doppelte Geschichte des Begriffes der Dichtung, der in der Moderne einerseits die Fiktionalität als charakteristisches Merkmal bezeichnet, andererseits aber den spezifisch inspirierten Charakter der "Lyrik"

    Was ist Literatur? Was ist Fiktion? Was ist der Charakter eines bestimmten Genres? Solche Fragen lassen sich nicht essentialistisch beantworten, sondern es kommt darauf an, die sozialen Praktiken zu untersuchen, in denen Menschen agieren, wenn sie literarische Texte lesen. Eine eingehende empirische Untersuchung der Geschichte der miteinander verknüpften Literatur-, Fiktions- und Genrepraktiken wurde bisher jedoch nicht unternommen. Die Arbeit nimmt sich dieses Desiderats an, indem sie anhand exemplarischer Konstellationen untersucht, wie bestimmte Genrepraktiken charakteristische Text-Welt-Verhältnisse herstellen. Zu diesem Zweck rekonstruiert die Untersuchung auf breiter empirischer Basis Lektürepraktiken von Literaturkritikern mithilfe qualitativ-hermeneutischer und quantitativ-statistischer Methoden. Mit Studien zum historischen Roman, Tendenzroman und Zeitroman sowie zum Schlüsselroman bietet die Arbeit nicht nur eine neue Sicht auf die Beziehung von Literatur und Wirklichkeit in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart; Analysen zu Wechselwirkungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Typen literarischer Praktiken eröffnen eine neue Perspektive auf literarische Kommunikation im Allgemeinen und die Geschichte der Fiktionalität im Besonderen. What is literature? What is fiction? What constitutes a particular genre? We cannot provide essentialist answers to these questions and instead have to examine the social practices in which people act when they read literary texts. This study sheds light on the history of the interconnected practices of literature, fiction, and genre, opening up new perspectives on the relationship between literature and reality.

    The aim of this book is to devise a method for approaching the problem of presence in Hellenistic and Roman poetry. The problem of presence, as defined here, is the problem of the availability or accessibility to the reader of the fictional worlds disclosed by poetry. From Callimachus’ Hymns to the Odes of Horace, poets of this era repeatedly challenge readers by beckoning them to explore fictive spaces which are at once familiar and otherworldly, realms of the imagination which are nevertheless firmly rooted in the lived reality of the poets and their contemporaries. We too, when we read these poems, may feel simultaneously a sense of being transported to a world apart and of being seized upon by the poem’s address in the here and now of reading. The fiction of occasion is proposed as a new conceptual tool for understanding how these poems produce such problematic presences and what varieties of experience they make possible for their readers. The fiction of occasion is defined as a phenomenon whereby a poem is fictionally framed as part of a material event or ‘occasion’ with which the reader is invited to engage through the medium of the senses. The book explores this concept through close readings of key authors from the corpus of first-person poetry written in Greek and Latin between the 3rd century BCE and the 1st century CE, with a focus on Callimachus, Bion, Catullus, Propertius, and Horace. The ultimate purpose of these readings is to move towards developing a new vocabulary for conceptualising ancient poetry as an embodied experience.

    Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert übernehmen Nationalepen eine wichtige Funktion im kulturellen Haushalt fast jeder Nation – wie sich nicht zuletzt in den nach 1989 neu entstandenen Ländern (Mittel-)Osteuropas eindrücklich bestätigt hat. Installiert worden ist das nationalepische Programm von der deutschen Romantik, insbesondere von Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm. Die in diesem Band versammelten Aufsätze analysieren die Entstehung, die Vernetzung und die Rezeption von europäischen Nationalepen.     Während der Begriff „Erlebnis“ in alltagssprachlichen Kontexten allgegenwärtig ist, hat er in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte eine sich wandelnde Konjunktur durchlebt. Die im Band versammelten Beiträge zeichnen die Geschichte des Erlebnisbegriffs mit Blick auf produktions- und rezeptionsästhetische wie auch auf empirische Kontexte nach und zeigen seine Nutzbarkeit für heutige Debatten auf. Die einzelnen Untersuchungen setzen sich beispielsweise mit dem Konzept der „Erlebnislyrik“ auseinander oder hinterfragen die Erlebnishaftigkeit des Lesens, aber auch des Bergsteigens oder Forschens. Sie fragen, was sich durch Literatur für das Leben lernen lässt oder wie Erleben und Schreiben miteinander zusammenhängen. Die Frage, wer welche Geschichte erzählen darf, wird mitunter sogar juristisch relevant. Werke von Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe, Wilhelm Dilthey, Walter Benjamin und Edmund Husserl bilden für mehrere Beiträge die gemeinsamen Ausgangspunkte. While the term “experience” [Erlebnis] is omnipresent in everyday language contexts, it went through a changing conjuncture in the history of the humanities. The contributions collected in this volume trace the history of the concept “experience” in relation to production aesthetics, reception aesthetics and empirical contexts, demonstrating its compatibility with contemporary debates. From the concepts of Erlebnislyrik and the experiential nature of reading to mountaineering or experiences in research, the individual studies ask what literature can teach about life and how experience and writing are connected, or understood to be connected. A further example demonstrates how this can become legally relevant in view of who is allowed to tell which stories, and where. Works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Wilhelm Dilthey, Walter Benjamin, and Edmund Husserl provide the common intellectual starting point for most contributions. With contributions by Sandra Richter, Rüdiger Campe, Wolfgang Huemer, Nicolas Detering, Johannes Franzen, Christine A.     A major question in studies of aesthetic expression is how we can understand and explain similarities and differences among different forms of representation. In the current volume, this question is addressed through the lens of make-believe theory, a philosophical theory broadly introduced by two seminal works - Kendall Walton's Mimesis as Make-Believe and Gregory Currie's The Nature of Fiction, both published 1990. Since then, make-believe theory has become central in the philosphical discussion of representation. As a first of its kind, the current volume comprises 17 detailed studies of highly different forms of representation, such as novels, plays, TV-series, role games, computer games, lamentation poetry and memoirs. The collection contributes to establishing make-believe theory as a powerful theoretical tool for a wide array of studies traditionally falling under the humanities umbrella

    In diesem Grundlagenwerk zur antiken Literaturtheorie werden erstmals die wichtigsten antiken Theorien der literarischen Fiktion von Homer bis Isidor von Sevilla systematisch ausgewertet. Zur literarischen Fiktion wurden nicht erst in der Moderne, sondern schon in der Antike verschiedene Konzepte entwickelt. So hat Aristoteles im neunten Kapitel der Poetik die literarische Fiktion als Gegenstandsbereich des Dichters legitimiert. Über die literarische Fiktion wurde aber zum einen schon vor Aristoteles und zum anderen auch lange nach ihm diskutiert, wobei nicht alle Autoren dasjenige als Fiktion betrachtet haben, was wir oder was andere antike Autoren als solche angesehen haben. In dieser Arbeit werden die wichtigsten expliziten Äußerungen zur literarischen Fiktion untersucht, wohingegen die Praxis der literarischen Fiktion (für sich betrachtet) von der Untersuchung ausgeschlossen wurde. Die Ergebnisse werfen nicht nur ein neues Licht auf viele antike Texte, sondern zeigen auch, in welchem Ausmaß bereits in der Antike die modernen Fiktionstheorien vorbereitet wurden

    Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die Frage, was in der Zeit von 1450 bis 1750 als Dichtung begriffen wurde. Der erste Teil ist den Begriffen der Nachahmung und Gleichnishaftigkeit gewidmet und rekonstruiert die Rezeptionsgeschichte der aristotelischen "Poetik", deren Nachahmungsbegriff erst sichtbar werden konnte, als die Definition der Dichtung über Gleichnishaftigkeit, Exemplarizität oder ähnliche Konzepte in den Hintergrund zu treten begann. Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts ersetzt der Begriff der Fiktion den Begriff der Nachahmung. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit rekonstruiert die Geschichte des Enthusiasmus, der von den neuplatonisch beeinflussten Autoren um 1500 noch als göttliche Inspiration verstanden wird. Aus theologischen Gründen wird mit der Reformation die Möglichkeit einer göttlichen Inspiration bestritten. Inspiration ist jetzt nur noch eine Metapher für Begabung. Daraus entwickelt sich die Deutung des Enthusiasmus als einer besonderen "Stimmung" des lyrischen Dichters. Damit schreibt die Arbeit die doppelte Geschichte des Begriffes der Dichtung, der in der Moderne einerseits die Fiktionalität als charakteristisches Merkmal bezeichnet, andererseits aber den spezifisch inspirierten Charakter der "Lyrik"
