    In Platonic Occasions, Richard Begam and James Soderholm reflect upon a wide range of thinkers, writers and ideas from Plato, Descartes and Nietzsche to Shakespeare, the Romantics and the Moderns—from Evil, Love and Death to Art, Memory and Mimesis. The dialogues suggest that Percy Shelley was right when he claimed “We are all Greeks,” and yet what have we learned about the initiatives of culture and literature since our classical predecessors? Begam and Soderholm’s ten dialogues function as a series of dual-meditations that take Plato as an intellectual godfather while presenting a new form of dialogic knowledge based on the friction and frisson of two minds contending, inventing and improvising. The authors discuss not only what is healthy and vigorous about Western culture but also consider where that culture is in retreat, as they seek to understand the legacy of the Enlightenment and its relation to the contemporary moment.Platonic Occasionsis an experiment in criticism that enjoins the reader to imagine what the dialogic imagination can do when inspired by Platonic inquiry, but not bound by a single master and the singular mind. Beyond Socratic maieutics and Cartesian meditation is a form of intellectual interplay where it is impossible not to be of two minds.

    "In the two centuries since Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito was first performed, and the almost three centuries since Metastasio created the libretto, many rumours, myths and prejudiced opinions have gathered around the work, creating a narrative that Mozart, Mazzolà and their contemporaries would scarcely recognise. The essays in this book contribute ideas, facts and images that will draw the twenty-first-century reader closer to the events of Central Europe in the late eighteenth century, and these new facts and ideas will help peel off some of the transmitted accretions that may hinder a modern listener from enjoying and understanding the opera in all its fullness. In this sense the essays present the reappraisal promised in the title.

     

    The book is a product of the Performing Premodernity research project, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences and based at the department of theatre studies of Stockholm University. Envisioned and edited by Magnus Tessing Schneider and Ruth Tatlow, the five essays by internationally renowned Mozart scholars are preceded by a chronology and a selection of original documents presented in new and revised parallel translations."

In this late work, Diderot delves playfully into the relationship between bodily sensation, emotion and perception, and asks his readers what it means to be human in the absence of a soul.

     

    The Atheist’s Bible challenges prevailing scholarly views on Diderot’s Éléments, asserting its contemporary philosophical importance, and prompting its readers to inspect more closely this little-known and little-studied work. In this timely volume, Warman establishes the place of Diderot’s Éléments in the trajectory of materialist theories of nature and the mind stretching back to Epicurus and Lucretius, and explores the fascinating reasons behind scholarly neglect of this seminal work. In turn, Warman outlines the hitherto unacknowledged dissemination and reception of Diderot’s Éléments, demonstrating how Diderot’s Éléments was circulated in manuscript-form as early as the 1790s, thus showing how the text came to influence the next generations of materialist thinkers.

     

    This book is accompanied by a digital edition of Jacques-André Naigeon’s Mémoires historiques et philosophiques sur la vie et les ouvrages de Denis Diderot (1823), a work which, Warman argues, represents the first publication of Diderot’s Éléments, long before its official publication date of 1875.

    "From Jonathan Swift to Washington Irving, those looking to propose and justify exceptions to social and political norms turned to Cervantes’s notoriously mad comic hero as a model. A World of Disorderly Notions examines the literary and political effects of Don Quixote, arguing that what makes this iconic character so influential across oceans and cultures is not his madness but his logic. Aaron Hanlon contends that the logic of quixotism is in fact exceptionalism—the strategy of rendering oneself an exception to everyone else’s rules.

    As British and American societies of the Enlightenment developed the need to question the acceptance of various forms of imperialism and social contract theory—and to explain both the virtues and limitations of revolutions past and ongoing—it was Quixote’s exceptionalism, not his madness, that captured the imaginations of so many writers and statesmen. As a consequence, the eighteenth century witnessed an explosion of imitations of Quixote in fiction and polemical writing, by writers such as Jonathan Swift, Charlotte Lennox, Henry Fielding, and Washington Irving, among others.

    The Original Portrayal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni offers an original reading of Mozart’s and Da Ponte’s opera Don Giovanni, using as a lens the portrayal of the title role by its creator, the baritone Luigi Bassi (1766–1825). Although Bassi was coached in the role by the composer himself, his portrayal has never been studied in depth before, and this book presents a large number of new sources (first- and second-hand accounts), which allows us to reconstruct his performance scene by scene. The book confronts Bassi’s portrayal with a study of the opera’s early German reception and performance history, demonstrating how Don Giovanni as we know it today was not only created by Mozart, Da Ponte and Luigi Bassi but also by the early German adapters, translators, critics and performers who turned the title character into the arrogant and violent villain we still encounter in most of today’s stage productions. Incorporating discussion of dramaturgical thinking of the late Enlightenment and the difficult moral problems that the opera raises, this is an important study for scholars and researchers from opera studies, theatre and performance studies, music history as well as conductors, directors and singers.

Bisher ging die Forschung dabei davon aus, dass die Philosophie Spinozas und Descartes' den Maler beeinflusst haben könnte. Andeas Prater zeigt hingegen, dass und wie bestimmte Maximen und Sentenzen Epikurs und seines lateinischen Herolds Lukrez in Vermeers Malerei Eingang gefunden haben. Epikur wurde im 17. Jahrhundert wiederentdeckt und hinsichtlich seiner lange in Verruf geratenen Lehre von Freude und Lust rehabilitiert. Die bisher völlig unbeachteten und unbekannten Aspekte lassen das Werk des großen holländischen Malers in einem ganz neuen Licht erscheinen Vermeer van Delft is considered to be the most important painter of Dutch life in the so-called Golden Age. Many studies of his paintings have dealt with deciphering concealed connections and symbolic references. The research has up to now assumed that the philosophy of Spinoza and Descartes may have influenced the painter. Andreas Prater, in contrast, shows that and how particular maxims and sentences by Epicurus and his Latin successor Lucretius were incorporated in Vermeer’s paintings. Epicurus was rediscovered in the seventeenth century and his doctrines of joy and desire, which had fallen into disrepute for a long time, rehabilitated. The hitherto neglected and unknown aspects make the work of the great Dutch painter appear in an entirely new light

    Die literarische Darstellung von Herr-Knecht-Beziehungen gewinnt im Verlauf des 18. Jahrhunderts an Brisanz, weil das Gottesgnadentum als Begründung für monarchische Herrschaftsansprüche nicht mehr anerkannt wird. In Folge dessen werden Herr- und Knechtschaftsverhältnisse – auch in der Literatur – neu gedacht. Dennoch liegt bis dato keine gattungs- und epochenübergreifende literaturwissenschaftliche Studie zum Thema vor. Die vorliegende Arbeit sucht diese Lücke zu schließen. Aus ideengeschichtlicher Perspektive werden exemplarische literarische Texte u.a. von Beaumarchais, Brecht, Diderot, Grillparzer, Hofmannsthal, Horváth, Strindberg, Tolstoi und R. Walser analysiert und vor dem Hintergrund paradigmatischer, epochen- und gattungsübergreifender Modelle interdependenter Herrschaft in der Literatur vorgestellt. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, wie die Literatur vom 18. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert an den herrschaftstheoretischen Debatten ihrer Zeit partizipiert

    In ancient China a monster called Taowu was known for both its vicious nature and its power to see the past and the future. Over the centuries Taowu underwent many incarnations until it became identifiable with history itself. Since the seventeenth century, fictive accounts of history have accommodated themselves to the monstrous nature of Taowu. Moving effortlessly across the entire twentieth-century literary landscape, David Der-wei Wang delineates the many meanings of Chinese violence and its literary manifestations. Taking into account the campaigns of violence and brutality that have rocked generations of Chinese—often in the name of enlightenment, rationality, and utopian plenitude—this book places its arguments along two related axes: history and representation, modernity and monstrosity. Wang considers modern Chinese history as a complex of geopolitical, ethnic, gendered, and personal articulations of bygone and ongoing events. His discussion ranges from the politics of decapitation to the poetics of suicide, and from the typology of hunger and starvation to the technology of crime and punishment

    "From Jonathan Swift to Washington Irving, those looking to propose and justify exceptions to social and political norms turned to Cervantes’s notoriously mad comic hero as a model. A World of Disorderly Notions examines the literary and political effects of Don Quixote, arguing that what makes this iconic character so influential across oceans and cultures is not his madness but his logic. Aaron Hanlon contends that the logic of quixotism is in fact exceptionalism—the strategy of rendering oneself an exception to everyone else’s rules. As British and American societies of the Enlightenment developed the need to question the acceptance of various forms of imperialism and social contract theory—and to explain both the virtues and limitations of revolutions past and ongoing—it was Quixote’s exceptionalism, not his madness, that captured the imaginations of so many writers and statesmen. As a consequence, the eighteenth century witnessed an explosion of imitations of Quixote in fiction and polemical writing, by writers such as Jonathan Swift, Charlotte Lennox, Henry Fielding, and Washington Irving, among others. Combining literary history and political theory, Hanlon clarifies an ongoing and immediately relevant history of exceptionalism, of how states from Golden Age Spain to imperial Britain to the formative United States rendered themselves exceptions so they could act with impunity.     Die literarische Darstellung von Herr-Knecht-Beziehungen gewinnt im Verlauf des 18. Jahrhunderts an Brisanz, weil das Gottesgnadentum als Begründung für monarchische Herrschaftsansprüche nicht mehr anerkannt wird. In Folge dessen werden Herr- und Knechtschaftsverhältnisse - auch in der Literatur - neu gedacht. Dennoch liegt bis dato keine gattungs- und epochenübergreifende literaturwissenschaftliche Studie zum Thema vor. Die vorliegende Arbeit sucht diese Lücke zu schließen. Aus ideengeschichtlicher Perspektive werden exemplarische literarische Texte u.a. von Beaumarchais, Brecht, Diderot, Grillparzer, Hofmannsthal, Horváth, Strindberg, Tolstoi und R. Walser analysiert und vor dem Hintergrund paradigmatischer, epochen- und gattungsübergreifender Modelle interdependenter Herrschaft in der Literatur vorgestellt. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, wie die Literatur vom 18. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert an den herrschaftstheoretischen Debatten ihrer Zeit partizipiert

Um solche Inhalte trotzdem semiotisch fass- und ästhetisch nutzbar zu machen, braucht es ein un-bestimmtes Medium: Musik scheint dazu besonders geeignet. Das ist im 18. Jahrhundert, dem Zeitalter von Ästhetik und Empfindsamkeit, von besonderem Interesse. Gerstenbergs Auseinandersetzung mit intermedialen, literarisch-musikalischen Medienkonzepten ist der Versuch, das Unmögliche poetisch möglich zu machen: die Bestimmtheit der Sprache mit der Unbestimmtheit der Musik zu kombinieren und so die Aporie „bestimmter Empfindungen“ erfahrbar zu machen. Clear conceptual sharpness—distinctness: that is the strength of language. Where the clearly defining mind reaches its limits, conceptual confusion and poetic potential arise. To make such ideas nevertheless semiotically graspable and aesthetically usable, an indistinct medium is needed. Music seems particularly suitable for this. This is especially of interest in relation to the 18th century, the age of aesthetics and sentimentalism. Gerstenberg's examination of overlapping literary and musical media concepts and genres is an attempt to make the impossible poetically possible: To combine the distinctness of language with the indistinctness of music and thus to make the aporia of ‘certain sentiments’ tangible.

Jahrhunderts an Brisanz, weil das Gottesgnadentum als Begründung für monarchische Herrschaftsansprüche nicht mehr anerkannt wird. In Folge dessen werden Herr- und Knechtschaftsverhältnisse – auch in der Literatur – neu gedacht. Dennoch liegt bis dato keine gattungs- und epochenübergreifende literaturwissenschaftliche Studie zum Thema vor. Die vorliegende Arbeit sucht diese Lücke zu schließen. Aus ideengeschichtlicher Perspektive werden exemplarische literarische Texte u.a. von Beaumarchais, Brecht, Diderot, Grillparzer, Hofmannsthal, Horváth, Strindberg, Tolstoi und R. Walser analysiert und vor dem Hintergrund paradigmatischer, epochen- und gattungsübergreifender Modelle interdependenter Herrschaft in der Literatur vorgestellt. Auf diese Weise wird deutlich, wie die Literatur vom 18. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert an den herrschaftstheoretischen Debatten ihrer Zeit partizipiert

Der Band wirft Schlaglichter auf die Geschichte einer vergessenen Schlüsselkategorie von der Klassischen Rhetorik bis zur Romantik.Das Phänomen antikonsensualer Rede wird anhand des Begriffs der Paradoxie untersucht, der heute zumeist den logischen Widerspruch meint, im traditionellen Verständnis aber eine Rede oder eine These gegen (gr. pará) eine allgemeine Meinung (gr. dóxa) bezeichnet hat. Dabei werden verschiedene Praktiken antikonsensualer Rede nach ihrer Zwecksetzung und ihrer Formgebung unterschieden, die ihrerseits darauf hinweisen, in welchem Verhältnis Mensch, Sprache und Wahrheit jeweils gesehen werden. So wird erstmals ein Bogen von sophistischen Schaureden über moralphilosophische Lehren der Antike und der Renaissance bis hin zu den epochemachenden Aufwertungen des untersuchten Phänomens in Aufklärung und Frühromantik geschlagen
