De la fin du XIXe siècle à la Guerre civile, les arts du spectacle (Zarzuela, género chico, théâtre lyrique ou pornographique) ont été porteurs d'enjeux politiques, culturels et esthétiques analysés ici dans une optique d'histoire culturelle. Les questions du nationalisme, l'importance des transferts culturels ‒ par les traductions ou les adaptations ‒, la présence nouvelle et plus fréquente du corps féminin, les innovations techniques sont autant de thématiques que l'auteur a abordées au fil des années, explorant ainsi la place du social et du politique dans les pratiques culturelles autant que le rôle complexe et ambigu de la modernité dans les genres dits "de masse".
