Everyone is talking about digitization, but what does the ubiquitous buzzword mean? The concern of critical women's and gender studies is to demystify the term digitization and to point out the social dimensions of digitization processes. For this, interdisciplinary exchange between the technical and social sciences is essential. The anthology therefore combines approaches from the social, educational and cultural sciences with analyses from the natural and technical sciences to stimulate a critical discussion of the term.

    Over the recent decades, the possibilities to surveil people have increased and been refined with the ongoing digital transformation of society. Surveillance can now go in any direction, and various forms of online surveillance saturate most people’s lives, which are increasingly lived in digital environments. To understand this situation and nuance the contemporary discussions about surveillance – not least in the highly digitalised context of the Nordic countries – we must adopt cultural and ethical perspectives in studying people’s attitudes, motives, and behaviours. The “culture of surveillance”, to borrow David Lyon’s term, is a culture where questions about privacy and publicness, and rights and benefits, are once again brought to the fore. This anthology takes up this challenge, with contributions from a variety of disciplinary and theoretical frameworks that discuss and shed light on the complexity of contemporary surveillance and thus problematise power relations between the many actors involved in the development and performance of surveillance culture. The contributions highlight how more and more actors and practices play a part in our increasingly digitalised society. The book is an outcome of the research project “iAccept: Soft surveillance – between acceptance and resistance”, financed by the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation. The anthology’s editors are project members, all based at Umeå University, Sweden: Lars Samuelsson, associate professor of philosophy; Coppélie Cocq, professor of Sámi studies and digital humanities; Stefan Gelfgren, associate professor of sociology of religion; and Jesper Enbom, associate professor of media studies.

    In den letzten Jahren sehen sich wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken aufgrund des fortschreitenden digitalen und technologischen Wandels mit tiefgreifenden Transformationsprozessen konfrontiert. Dies gilt auch für die Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg Frankfurt am Main (UB JCS) und zeigt sich in zahlreichen neuen Arbeitsbereichen und Serviceangeboten, die häufig in Kooperation mit Wissenschaft und Informationsinfrastruktur aufgebaut und weiterentwickelt werden. Der folgende Beitrag bietet einen Einblick in ausgewählte Arbeitsbereiche der UB JCS – die überregionalen Forschungsservices im Rahmen der Fachinformationsdienste (FID), die bedarfsorientierte Unterstützung der digitalen Geisteswissenschaften an der Goethe-Universität und der Aufbau der digitalen Langzeitarchivierung und -verfügbarkeit für Forschung und Verwaltung. Es wird exemplarisch gezeigt, dass die UB JCS die Herausforderungen des digitalen Wandels nicht nur annimmt, sondern erfolgreich bewältigt; dies geschieht aktiv in partnerschaftlicher Form unter Beteiligung von Bibliothekar*innen, Informationswissenschaftler*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen. Abstract: Research libraries are confronted with profound transformation processes due to the ongoing digital and technological change. This also applies to the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg Frankfurt am Main (UB JCS), which is actively shaping these transformation processes, and this is reflected in numerous new work areas and services, which are often established and developed in cooperation with research communities and infrastructures. This article offers an insight into a selection of work areas at the UB JCS – nation-wide research services provided within the framework of the Fachinformationsdienste (Specialized Information Services, FID), on-demand support for the Digital Humanities at Goethe University, and the efforts to ensure long-term preservation and availability for digital objects in research and administration. The article exemplifies how UB JCS does not only accept the challenges of the digital transformation, but also successfully overcomes them. This happens through collaborations of librarians, information scientists, and researchers.

    Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung trägt aktuelle Daten und Erkenntnisse zur Auswirkung der Digitalisierung auf die Arbeitswelt und den Gesundheitszustand von Erwerbstätigen im Freistaat Thüringen zusammen. Die Publikation vermittelt einen exemplarischen Überblick über momentane Entwicklungen, Chancen, Herausforderungen und Handlungsfelder, die im Zuge der Digitalisierung ausgemacht werden. Die Erfassung dieser Daten erfolgte anhand eines Online-Fragebogens in einem Zeitraum vom 01. Juni 2021 bis zum 06. September 2021 durch das Interventionsprojekt „Digitale Arbeit erfolgreich gesund gestalten“. Wie die Daten dieser Erhebung nahelegen, ist die Digitalisierung in der Erwerbsbevölkerung in Thüringen angekommen und führt in diesem Zusammenhang zu gesundheitlichen Veränderungen. This publication provides information about and insights into the effects of digitalization in work environments, and the health conditions of employees related to this in Thuringia, Germany. The publication presents an overview of current developments as well as opportunities, and identifies challenges and fields of action in connection with the digitalization. The used data has been collected through an online survey in the period of June 1, 2021 through September 6, 2021 in the course of the co-operating project “Digitale Arbeit erfolgreich gesund gestalten”, which translates to “making digital work successful and healthy”. The results of the survey indicate, that the process of digitalization has taken a hold on work environments in Thuringia and, as a consequence, has led to changes in the general health of the employees.

    Diese qualitative Studie untersuchte den Einfluss von digitalen Kommunikations- und Interaktionsformen auf die religiösen Orientierungen muslimischer Jugendlicher in Österreich. Die Analyse zahlreicher qualitativer Interviews zeigt, dass religiöse Orientierungen eng mit sozialen Medien verwoben sind und dass mediale Islambilder einen proportionalen Einfluss auf religiöse Orientierungen haben. Die Studie belegt auch, dass von einer komplexen Wechselwirkung ausgegangen werden muss. Die Ergebnisse bieten neue Perspektiven für die Erforschung religiöser Orientierungen muslimischer Jugendlicher im Zeitalter digitaler Medien, regen zur kritischen Reflexion herkömmlicher Islambilder an und können für ExpertInnen und PraktikerInnen von Bedeutung sein. This qualitative study examines the influence of digital forms of communication and interaction on the religious orientations of Muslim youth in Austria. The analysis of numerous interviews shows that religious orientations are closely interwoven with social media and that media images of Islam have a proportional influence on religious orientations. The analysis also proves that a complex interaction must be assumed., The findings offer new perspectives for research on the religious orientations of Muslim youth in the age of digital media, encourage critical reflection on conventional images of Islam and may be of relevance to experts and practitioners.

    The financial sector in advanced economies has undergone significant evolution driven by restructuring, globalization, and the digital revolution, which have profoundly shaped its developmental dynamics. This study investigates the forces behind the growth and convergence of the financial sector across 13 advanced economies from 2000 to 2015, focusing on the effects of digital transformation. The investigation unveils several noteworthy findings concerning the financial sector. First, most nations experienced substantial growth in valueadded, coupled with a significant decrease in employment and robust advancements in labor productivity. Next, the primary drivers of labor productivity growth and convergence across many economies were driven by total factor productivity, labor quality, and digital transformation. Lastly, digital transformation not only directly contributed to the augmentation of labor productivity, as quantified through growth accounting estimation, but also wielded a considerable impact on the expansion of total factor productivity and the streamlining of the workforce.

    The German government intends to establish standards for responsible sourcing of metals, and laid out its objectives in a position paper in January 2023 ("Paths to sus­tainable and resilient raw material supplies"). German firms source much of the metals they use through traders, exchanges and over-the-counter markets. These tend to be located outside the European Union in countries whose regulations on corporate due diligence are weaker than the EU’s. Given the central role of commodity traders and exchanges in securing the supply of metals and enforcing sustainability standards in metal supply chains, the German government should ensure that its im­plementation of its position paper devotes commensurate attention to the commo­dity trade. Robust supply chain legislation at the EU level, also covering the financial sector, will permit Germany to exert indirect influence on commodity traders, exchanges and over-the-counter markets.

    Notwithstanding increasing policy and academic debate around the ‘twin’ digital and ecological transitions, there is no systematic assessment of their linkages, potential synergies and trade-offs. Most fundamentally, the full extent of challenges that their interaction poses for the prospects of a ‘just transition’ is not fully understood. This paper discusses the role and impact of digital technologies on two key objectives of a just sustainability transition, namely (1) the creation of decent-quality employment in (2) the pursuit of climate change mitigation and, more broadly, sustainability. In addition, it also discusses (3) whether and how digitalisation affects society more broadly, with a particular focus on how digital technologies can contribute to or reduce existing inequalities, as well as promote social dialogue at all levels. For each of these three aspects, evidence is presented regarding either the negative or positive effects of a number of digital technologies in several key sectors. Based on this evidence, the rationale for jointly addressing these transformations is explained and key policy implications are put forward.

    Due to rapid technological changes, governments in developing countries have paid special attention to sustainability. However, understanding insights into the sustainability of telecentres remains an open question. This paper aims to fill this gap. We conducted a case study in Vietnam by using both qualitative and quantitative data. We used the Kumar and Best's (2006) model as our theoretical lens to analyse the sustainability of telecentres in Vietnam. The paper finds that telecentres have shifted their concept to provide a wide range of services, both online and offline. The paper indicates that technological, political, and social sustainability are important for the sustainability of telecentres. The paper recommends that we should take the role of state-owned enterprises and the digital transformation at telecentres into consideration to sustain telecentres. Furthermore, the paper indicates the mutual relation between political and technical sustainability with social sustainability that has not been yet unveiled in the prior literature.

    Traditional organizations are strongly encouraged by emerging digital customer behavior and digital competition to transform their businesses for the digital age. Incumbents are particularly exposed to the field of tension between maintaining and renewing their business model. Banking is one of the industries most affected by digitalization, with a large stream of digital innovations around Fintech. Most research contributions focus on digital innovations, such as Fintech, but there are only a few studies on the related challenges and perspectives of incumbent organizations, such as traditional banks. Against this background, this dissertation examines the specific causes, effects and solutions for traditional banks in digital transformation − an underrepresented research area so far. The first part of the thesis examines how digitalization has changed the latent customer expectations in banking and studies the underlying technological drivers of evolving business-to-consumer (B2C) business models.     Traditional organizations are strongly encouraged by emerging digital customer behavior and digital competition to transform their businesses for the digital age. Incumbents are particularly exposed to the field of tension between maintaining and renewing their business model. Banking is one of the industries most affected by digitalization, with a large stream of digital innovations around Fintech. Most research contributions focus on digital innovations, such as Fintech, but there are only a few studies on the related challenges and perspectives of incumbent organizations, such as traditional banks. Against this background, this dissertation examines the specific causes, effects and solutions for traditional banks in digital transformation − an underrepresented research area so far. The first part of the thesis examines how digitalization has changed the latent customer expectations in banking and studies the underlying technological drivers of evolving business-to-consumer (B2C) business models.
