    Data Science (DS) is gaining significant importance in the decision process due to a mix of various areas, including Computer Science, Machine Learning, Math and Statistics, domain/business knowledge, software development, and traditional research. In the business field, DS's application allows using scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data to support the decision process. After collecting the data, it is crucial to discover the knowledge. In this step, Knowledge Discovery (KD) tasks are used to create knowledge from structured and unstructured sources (e.g., text, data, and images). The output needs to be in a readable and interpretable format. It must represent knowledge in a manner that facilitates inferencing. KD is applied in several areas, such as education, health, accounting, energy, and public administration. This book includes fourteen excellent articles which discuss this trending topic and present innovative solutions to show the importance of Data Science and Knowledge Discovery to researchers, managers, industry, society, and other communities. The chapters address several topics like Data mining, Deep Learning, Data Visualization and Analytics, Semantic data, Geospatial and Spatio-Temporal Data, Data Augmentation and Text Mining.

    Epidemiological models are commonly used to predict and describe the spread of a viral outbreak among a population. Many such models use differential equations and transition rates to predict the growth dynamics of the infectious and exposed groups with a greater population. These methods do not distinguish between infectious individuals. In this paper, we propose a new model that includes asymptomatic carriers while holding constant many of the transition rates and assumptions of the classical models. Our results replicate those described in similar research papers, showing that a small proportion of asymptomatic carriers can be responsible for a majority of the transmissions. We propose possible extensions to our model, an early classification algorithm to identify asymptomatic carriers, underlining the impactful applications it may have on healthcare management and public safety policymaking

    This paper reviews the use of big data in Asian central banks, leveraging on a survey conducted among the members of the Irving Fisher Committee. The analysis reveals four main insights. First, Asian central banks define big data in a more encompassing way that includes unstructured non-traditional as well as structured data sets. Second, interest in big data appears higher in Asia, including at the senior policy level; the focus is in particular on projects developed to process natural language, conduct nowcasting/monitoring exercises, and develop applications to extract economy insights as well as suptech/regtech solutions. Third, Asian central banks report dealing with big data to support a wide range of tasks. Fourth, big data poses new challenges, with specific attention paid in the region to cyber security and data strategy. As a result, there is a growing need for international policy cooperation, especially among public authorities in Asia to facilitate the use of payments data and promote innovative technological solutions.

    In this paper, we study the crowdsourcing of innovation in Africa through a data science contest on an intermediated digital platform. We ran a Machine Learning (ML) contest on the continent's largest data science contest platform, Zindi. Contestants were surveyed on their motivations to take part and their perceptions about AI in Africa. In total, 614 contestants submitted 15,832 entries, and 559 responded to the accompanying survey. From the findings, we answered several questions: who take part in these contests and why? Who is most likely to win? What are contestants' entrepreneurial aspirations in deploying AI? What are the obstacles they perceive to the greater diffusion of AI in Africa? We conclude that crowdsourcing of AI via data contest platforms offers a potential mechanism to alleviate some of the constraints in the adoption and diffusion of AI in Africa. Recommendations for further research are made.
