    "I've struck it!" Mark Twain wrote in a 1904 letter to a friend. "And I will give it away—to you. You will never know how much enjoyment you have lost until you get to dictating your autobiography." Thus, after dozens of false starts and hundreds of pages, Twain embarked on his "Final (and Right) Plan" for telling the story of his life. His innovative notion—to "talk only about the thing which interests you for the moment"—meant that his thoughts could range freely. The strict instruction that many of these texts remain unpublished for 100 years meant that when they came out, he would be "dead, and unaware, and indifferent," and that he was therefore free to speak his "whole frank mind." The year 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Twain's death. In celebration of this important milestone and in honor of the cherished tradition of publishing Mark Twain's works, UC Press is proud to offer for the first time Mark Twain's uncensored autobiography in its entirety and exactly as he left it.     In Rhetoric, Poetics, and Literary Historiography, Stefan H. Uhlig offers a new account of the emergence of literary studies. Most histories of the early years of the field search for unifying origins of literature as a discipline and object of study. Uhlig turns to the decades around 1800 in Europe to reveal that the inception of the literary field was instead defined by intellectual diversity and contestation. He draws on an array of European writers to show how three schools of literary study-rhetoric teaching, theories of poetry, and literary history-emerged and clashed during this time, offering near-contemporaneous, yet divergent, visions of how to understand literature. Rhetoric and poetics thwarted criticism, to different ends, while literary historiography proved institutionally reassuring yet less useful as a tool for textual understanding.Uhlig details how Scottish writers like Adam Smith and Hugh Blair taught rhetoric as a form self-expression, while Anglophone and German theorists of poetry like William Wordsworth, Friedrich Schlegel, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe both engaged with and resented critics. At the same time, varying opinions on the practice of literary history emerged, with Immanuel Kant and Thomas De Quincey arguing for the independence of literature from historical forces while writers like Matthew Arnold approached literature as a means of narrating cultural archives instead of drawing on close reading and analysis. Rhetoric, Poetics, and Literary Historiography traces current debates in literary studies back to this formative moment, serving as a guide to past and present controversies in the field

    Die politisch-theologischen Antipoden Franz Kafka (1883–1924) und Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) hatten sachlich einiges gemeinsam: Sie waren beide Juristen und Avantgardisten; sie kritisierten den rechtspositivistischen Anstaltsstaat, personalisierten und dämonisierten die bürokratische Herrschaft. Darum spiegelte Schmitt seine Justizerfahrung nach 1945 auch in Kafka-Notaten und betrachtete die Bundesrepublik als „Kafkanien“. Reinhard Mehring erörtert irritierende Nähen in der dystopischen Wahrnehmung des modernen Staates als Baustein zur politischen Wirkungsgeschichte Kafkas und zur Verdeutlichung der Rechtsskepsis von Schmitts Spätwerk. Generally considered antipodes in political as well as theological matters, Franz Kafka (1883–1924) and Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) had more in common that meets the eye: they were both jurists and avant-gardists; they criticized the legal positivist institutional state, personalized and demonized bureaucratic rule. That is why Schmitt penned notes on Kafka in order to reflect his judicial experience after 1945, regarding the German Federal Republic as "Kafkanien". Reinhard Mehring discusses the irritating proximities both authors show concerning the dystopian perception of the modern state as elements for the political history of Kafka's impact and for clarifying the legal skepticism of Schmitt's late work.

Jahrhunderts und der Romantik sind in der klassischen Moderne ausdifferenziert worden. Im Rückgriff u.a. auf Sören Kierkegaard und Rudolf Kassner zeigt sich bei Hugo von Hofmannsthal und Thomas Mann, bei Bertolt Brecht und Friedrich Dürrenmatt, besonders bei Franz Kafka und Ingeborg Bachmann, wie sehr Platon in der Sicht der Literatur als Autor der Moderne gelesen worden ist. Plato's dialogues are scenes of cunning narrative strategies and dramaturgical scenarios. His criticism of the poets goes hand in hand with an astonishing literary refinement, the relevance of which, admittedly, has frequently been subject to discussion. Writers, in particular, have creatively taken up and carried forward the complexities of its procedure. The impulses of the 18th century and Romanticism have been differentiated in classical modernism. Taking recourse to Sören Kierkegaard and Rudolf Kassner, among others, eminent authors such as Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht and Friedrich Dürrenmatt, and especially Franz Kafka and Ingeborg Bachmann, provide ample evidence of the extent to which writers of literature have read Plato as an author of modernity.

Didn´t we conceive of authority as a stabilizing factor for many forms of life, criticizing which was always borne by respect for what was criticized? Indeed, deconstruction never simply equals destruction.
