In a number of case studies and close readings, it presents the seventeenth century as a period of change that saw a fundamental shift towards a new cultural configuration: neoclassicism.     The beginning is both internal and external to the text it initiates, and that noncoincidence points to the text’s vexed relation with its outside. Hence the nontrivial self-reflexivity of any textual beginning, which must bear witness to the self-grounding quality of the literary work— its inability either to comprise its inception or to externalize it in an authorizing exteriority. In a different but related way, the fact that they must begin renders our lives and our desires opaque to us; what Freud called “latency” marks not only sexuality but human thought with a self-division shaped by asynchronicity.From Henry James’s New York Edition prefaces to George Eliot’s epigraphs, from Ovid’s play with meter to Charles Dickens’s thematizing of the ex nihilo emergence of character, from Wallace Stevens’s abstract consideration of poetic origins to James Baldwin’s, Carson McCullers’s, and Eudora Welty’s descriptions of queer childhood, writers repeatedly confront the problem of inception. Inception introduces a fundamental contingency into texts and psyches alike: in the beginning, all could have been otherwise.For Kevin Ohi, the act of inception, and the potential it embodies, enables us to see making and unmaking coincide within the mechanism of creation. In this sense, Inceptions traces an ethics of reading, the possibility of perceiving, in the ostensibly finished forms of lives and texts, the potentiality inherent in their having started forth.

    Die Dissertation widmet sich vier ehemaligen Bestsellerautoren, die als Angehörige des nationalkonservativen Lagers in der Weimarer Republik erste Erfolge feierten, Deutschland nach 1933 nicht verließen und bis in die 1950er Jahre hinein das literarische Feld dominierten: Werner Bergengruen, Hans Carossa, Reinhold Schneider und Ernst Wiechert. Die Arbeit richtet ihren Fokus dabei dezidiert nicht auf die Frage nach der Nähe oder Distanz dieser Autoren zum NS-Regime, sondern auf deren Gegenwartsdeutung und Selbstpräsentation zwischen 1930 und 1950. In Fallstudien werden die Orientierungssuche und Standortbestimmungen dieser Autoren skizziert. Darüber hinaus werden die gemeinsamen poetischen Strategien systematisch dargestellt. The dissertation is dealing with four conservative bestselling authors who celebrated their first successes in the Weimar Republic, did not leave Germany after 1933 and dominated the literary field until the 1950s: Werner Bergengruen, Hans Carossa, Reinhold Schneider and Ernst Wiechert. The work does not focus on the question of the proximity or distance of these authors to the Nazi regime, but on their interpretation of the present and their self-presentation between 1930 and 1950. The search for orientation and self-positioning of these authors are outlined in case studies. In addition, the common poetic strategies are presented systematically.

    Max Webers Interpretationen der Grundbegriffe wie Macht, Herrschaft und Staat sind heute akademische Gemeinplätze. Kari Palonen diskutiert, wann, wozu und wie Webers Konzepte entstanden sind und gegen welche Ansichten und Personen er damit polemisierte. Palonen analysiert, wie Weber die Kontingenz der Begriffe der öffentlichen und akademischen Sprache sichtbar machte und wie er mit dem Begriff der Chance ermöglichte, diese neu zu denken.Anschließend zu seinen langjährigen Studien zu Webers politischem Denken und Methodologie benutzt Palonen Idealtypen zur Analyse des Weberschen Werks. Im ersten Teil des Buches diskutiert er Grundsätze, mit denen Max Weber als Politiker der Begriffe operiert. Der zweite Teil enthält Beispiele – Politik, Macht, Herrschaft, Staat, Demokratie, Parlamentarismus – die Webers Praktiken der begrifflichen Revisionen veranschaulichen. Im Schlusskapitel analysiert er, wie Max Weber in Parlamentsdebatten zitiert und ausgenutzt wird. Max Weber’s interpretations of key concepts such as power (Macht), rule (Herrschaft) and the state are today academic commonplaces. In this book, Kari Palonen discusses when, why and how such Weberian concepts were coined and against which views and authors he used them in polemic debate. Palonen analyses by which means Weber emphasised the contingency of public and academic language and how his concept of ‘chance’ enabled him to rethink them.Following on from his studies of Weber’s political thinking and methodology over many years, Palonen applies an ideal, archetypical approach to Weber’s own work. In the first part of the book, he discusses the principles that Weber used as a conceptual politician. The second part includes examples — politics, power, rule, the state, democracy and parliamentarianism — which illustrate Weber’s practices of conceptual revisions. In the final chapter, Palonen analyses how Max Weber has been quoted and his ideas used in parliamentary debates.

    In diesem Buch werden die medialen Konfigurationen »Bild« und »Spiel« über ihren jeweiligen Umgang mit Ungewissheit in Beziehung gesetzt. Diese Arbeit geht davon aus, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit Ungewissheit mehr denn je den geistigen Problemhorizont der Gegenwart bestimmt und auch zukünftig bestimmen wird. Die Rolle der Medien besteht dabei unter anderem darin, die paradoxe Erfahrung, dass alles kontingent ist, außer der Kontingenz selbst, in einen Umgang mit Ungewissheit zu transformieren, in dem letztere zwar nicht getilgt, aber eben »umgänglich« gemacht wird. Hier liegt der Einsatzpunkt des Buches: Formen der Wissensgenerierung, die sich des Spiels bedienen, um mit Kontingenz umzugehen.

    Abstract: Der Beitrag nimmt seinen Ausgang von Ingeborg Bachmanns Frankfurter Poetik- Vorlesungen (1959/60), in denen die Autorin unter anderem das Verhältnis von Geschichtlichkeit und Subjektivität diskutiert und nach Rollen und Funktionen der Namen literarischer Figuren in der Moderne fragt. Die nachfolgende Lektüre stellt in einem ersten Schritt die Bedeutungsabsicht, die mit Verleihung eines Namens bzw. Vornamens verknüpft ist, heraus und fragt nach möglichen Bedeutungen, die mit den Namen in der Erzählung Ein Wildermuth (1961) evoziert werden. In einem zweiten Schritt wird die Wahl des Namens mit der Logik einer existentiellen Wahl verglichen. In einem dritten Schritt wird die poetische Sprachfunktion, die laut Roman Jakobson eine Auswahl aus einem sprachlichen Paradigma erfordert, mit einer Dialektik von Zufälligkeit und Bedeutsamkeit konfrontiert, die sowohl die Namen in Bachmanns Erzählung als auch die Konstruktion ihrer Handlung charakterisieren. Abstract: This contribution takes the lectures on poetry delivered by the Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann at the Goethe University Frankfurt in 1959/60 as a point of departure for an argument that conflates onomastic and poetological considerations with an analysis of the first and operative sentence in Bachmann’s story A Wildermuth. Bachmann’s lectures investigate the relationship between historicity and subjectivity, and discuss the role and function of names given to literary figures. The intended meaning that is inherent to giving first names to children is taken as the basis for an analysis of the names in Bachmann’s novella. In a second step, the choice of names is compared to the choices made in existential decisions. In a third step, the poetic function of language, as defined by Roman Jakobson, is related to the dialectic between contingency and meaningfulness which characterizes both the play with names in Bachmann’s novella and its plot.

    Mit seinem Buch „Nach der Endlichkeit" hat der französische Philosoph Quentin Meillassoux die Denkbewegung des „Spekulativen Realismus" angestoßen. Dieser Beitrag stellt zunächst zentrale Argumentationsfiguren von Meillassoux vor. Dabei geht es nicht um die philosophische Fachdebatte einzelner Varianten von Realismus, Idealismus oder Naturalismus. Was hier interessiert, ist quasi eine zeitdiagnostische Vermutung: Dass sich nämlich an dieser Veröffentlichung eine signifikante Kulturveränderung des Denkens zeigt, welche auch die Möglichkeitsräume christlicher Praktiken und deren Theologie betrifft. Insofern ist dieser Text aber riskant, weil er sich auf einen Diskurs bezieht, der noch überhaupt nicht fertig gedacht ist und sich als Sackgasse erweisen kann. In drei abschließenden kleinen Ausblicken wird deshalb vorsichtig getestet, was sich praktisch-theologisch verändern könnte, wenn man sich von Meillassoux irritieren lässt. With his book After Finitude, the French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux established the movement of thought called "speculative realism". This article first presents main figures of argumentation from this book. Here it is not concerned with the specialized philosophical debate on particular versions of realism, idealism or naturalism. The point of interest is, in effect, a conjecture relating to a diagnosis of the times, namely that, with this publication, a significant change of thinking regarding culture appears which also affects the realms of possibility of Christian practices and their theology. In this respect, however, the text is risky because it refers to a discourse which has not yet been thought out to the end at all and which can prove to be a dead end. In three brief closing remarks concerning the future, the author therefore carefully tests what could change at a practical-theological level if one lets himself or herself be irritated by Meillassoux.

Palonen analysiert, wie Weber die Kontingenz der Begriffe der öffentlichen und akademischen Sprache sichtbar machte und wie er mit dem Begriff der Chance ermöglichte, diese neu zu denken.Anschließend zu seinen langjährigen Studien zu Webers politischem Denken und Methodologie benutzt Palonen Idealtypen zur Analyse des Weberschen Werks. Im ersten Teil des Buches diskutiert er Grundsätze, mit denen Max Weber als Politiker der Begriffe operiert. Der zweite Teil enthält Beispiele – Politik, Macht, Herrschaft, Staat, Demokratie, Parlamentarismus – die Webers Praktiken der begrifflichen Revisionen veranschaulichen. Im Schlusskapitel analysiert er, wie Max Weber in Parlamentsdebatten zitiert und ausgenutzt wird. Max Weber’s interpretations of key concepts such as power (Macht), rule (Herrschaft) and the state are today academic commonplaces. In this book, Kari Palonen discusses when, why and how such Weberian concepts were coined and against which views and authors he used them in polemic debate. Palonen analyses by which means Weber emphasised the contingency of public and academic language and how his concept of ‘chance’ enabled him to rethink them.Following on from his studies of Weber’s political thinking and methodology over many years, Palonen applies an ideal, archetypical approach to Weber’s own work. In the first part of the book, he discusses the principles that Weber used as a conceptual politician. The second part includes examples — politics, power, rule, the state, democracy and parliamentarianism — which illustrate Weber’s practices of conceptual revisions. In the final chapter, Palonen analyses how Max Weber has been quoted and his ideas used in parliamentary debates.

    The plot of a novel is expected to move purposefully toward an ending. Until the 19th century, processes within a reality believed to have been created by God were also understood to work in this way. As a result, novels claimed to represent reality through their purposefulness. Because of Charles Darwin, this world outlook entered a state of crisis. The study shows how narratives changed as a result of a new concept of reality as being erratic and random. How could novels depict this conception of reality? This question is discussed with reference to examples from literary and aesthetic texts Includes bibliographical references (p.     Zusammenfassung: Die Dissertation setzt sich aus interdisziplinärer wie intermedialer Perspektive damit auseinander, wie erzählliterarische Texte in der jüngsten Vergangenheit Musik adaptieren. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage, wie es mittels verschiedener literarischer Strategien (Metaphorisierung, Strukturanalogien, verbal music etc.) gelingt, der prinzipiell nicht-semantischen und somit bedeutungskontingenten Musik Bedeutung zuzuschreiben. Diese Semantisierungsprozesse schließen zum einen an eine über 200 Jahre alte Tradition der ‚Musikalisierung‘ von Literatur durch Verbalisierung an. In Erzähltexten, die sich auf sogenannte klassische beziehungsweise E-Musik konzentrieren, steht daher der parodistische oder affirmative Umgang mit der Tradition im Vordergrund. Dort, wo es um populäre Musik geht, stellt sich zum anderen die Frage, ob und wie sich die Textverfahren von den bereits etablierten unterscheiden. Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind unter anderem Romane von Hans-Ulrich Treichel, Helmut Krausser, Tobias O. Meißner und Rainald Goetz. Zusammenfassung: The dissertation deals with the way of adapting music in contemporary German novels from an interdisciplinary and intermedial perspective.

    Bible translation in Urak Lawoi’ began with linguistic work in the late 1960s. The Gospel of Mark was first published in 1976 and the New Testament in 1998. The Old Testament, though almost complete, was still in the checking phase in 2018. Those raw data reveal time to be one of the primary players in the drama. Time has impacted the agency of translation and its purpose, its cultural context, and even its medium. But contrary to current efficiency-based presuppositions and product-oriented drive, the result is not all bad. In the process the task has become rather a journey where the companionship is as important as the goal. This paper reflects on the exigencies of time and cultural shift over half a century of Bible translation in Urak Lawoi’.

    There are billions of dollars at stake in the US nuclear power plant decommissioning market. Approximately 100 nuclear power plants are still operating but will come offline and need to be decommissioned over the next few decades. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) mandates that the operators of these plants set money aside in segregated funds to finance decommissioning work. However, it is hard for external stakeholders to verify the cost estimations, which ultimately determine how much operators are required to save. In this paper, we develop a method to validate the existing cost models and calculate a contingency empirically for these models. We extend Reference Class Forecasting methods using adaptive kernel fitting and the Wilks' formula. Based on this method, and assuming a social tolerance for potential cost overruns of 20%, we calculate a new contingency of 48% of the estimated radiological decommissioning cost. After a "stress test" of the current decommissioning trust funds of operating reactor sites, we find that 48% of reactors we considered have sufficient funding-in many cases substantially more than required-and could therefore finance the potential scale of overrun. However, we find that 28 plants (52%) would fall short on average $211 million. Still, overruns at every plant are not a foregone conclusion because-while overruns are probable, based on past experience-the actual scale and frequency is not known. Nevertheless, our results add further evidence to the mounting call for the NRC to revise its cost models in light of new information.

    Mit der Unfall-Literatur behandelt die Verfasserin ein Genre, das nicht erst durch Höhenkammtexte von AutorInnen wie Franz Kafka und Robert Musil an Aufmerksamkeit verdient. Wenigstens seit dem 19. Jahrhundert fordern technische Katastrophen durch ihre neue Kontingenzerfahrung und ihren wahrnehmungsbedingten Entzug die kollektive Einbildungskraft heraus. Die vorliegende Studie geht von der These aus, dass die Unfall-Texte der literarischen Moderne (1880–1930er Jahre) einen Mythos ausbilden, der in ein produktives Spannungsverhältnis zu den neuen Massenmedien und Diskursen wie der Thermodynamik und der Physiologie gerät. Seine vielgestaltige Transformation wird entlang dreier Narrative nachvollzogen, die, ausgehend von den Risikosphären des Naturalismus (Hauptmann, Langmann, Zola, Alberti) hinüber zu den avantgardistischen Schöpfungsgeschichten (Marinetti, Höch, Jünger, Hesse) bis hin zu den medienreflexiven Kurztexten der Klassischen Moderne (Mann, Kafka, Bierbaum, Musil), einen facettenreichen Einblick in die Erzählweisen, Deutungspraktiken wie auch ästhetischen und rhetorischen Verfahren des Unfall-Mythos bieten. In this book, the author examines literature that portrays accidents, an aesthetic genre whose notable examples extend beyond texts by famous authors like Franz Kafka and Robert Musil. Technical disasters have provoked the collective imagination since the 19th century because of the new experience of contingency they create and the way they alter perception. This study argues that literature that depicts accidents creates a modern myth (1880s–1930s) which maintains an exciting connection with the mass media and discourses like thermodynamics and physiology. Its varied transformation is shown through three narrative genres. Starting from naturalism’s spheres of risk-taking (Hauptmann, Langmann, Zola, Alberti) to the avantgarde narrations of creation (Marinetti, Höch, Jünger, Hesse) and those texts of classical modernity (Mann, Kafka, Bierbaum, Musil) reflexive of modern media, the study offers a multifaceted insight into the narrative style, interpretation and the aesthetic and rhetorical processes involved in the literary depiction and mythicisation of accidents.

    Sequel to History offers a comprehensive definition of postmodernism as a reformation of time. Elizabeth Deeds Ermarth uses a diversified theoretical approachdrawing on post-structuralism, feminism, new historicism, and twentieth-century scienceto demonstrate the crisis of our dominant idea of history and its dissolution in the rhythmic time of postmodernism. She enlarges this definition in discussions of several crises of cultural identity: the crisis of the object, the crisis of the subject, and the crisis of the sign. Finally, she explores the relation between language and time in post-modernism, proposing an arresting theory of her own about the rhythmic nature of postmodern temporality. Because the postmodern construction of time appears so clearly in narrative writing, each part of this work is punctuated by a "rhythm section" on a postmodern narrative (Robbe-Grillet's Jealousy, Cortezar's Hopscotch, and Nabokov's Ada); these extended readings provide concrete illustrations of Ermarth's theoretical positions. As in her critically acclaimed Realism and Consensus in the English Novel, Ermarth ranges across disciplines from anthropology and the visual arts to philosophy and history.
