Parenthood: A neglected perspective in feminist debates? For a long time, feminist debates hardly dealt with parenthood and family. The equality feminism that has set the tone up to the present is oriented toward equality with men. men - unbound and freed from care work by women. Times change: a shift in the perspective on parenthood is making its way into feminist debates and struggles. No longer directed against the family, but against conditions in which life with children becomes an imposition. The handbook brings together 50 voices of feminism on the subject of parenthood. The contributions use buzzwords to explore the question, how motherhood, fatherhood and parenthood are processed in different feminist currents. How are legal aspects of the exercise of motherhood and fatherhood interpreted? What paths lead to parenthood? And what do feminist utopias of a good of a good life with children?

We study the effect of childbirth on local and non-local employment dynamics for both men and women using Belgian social security and geo-location data. Applying an event-study design that accounts for treatment effect heterogeneity, we show that 75 percent of the effect of the birth of a first child on the overall gender gap in employment is accounted for by gender disparities in non-local employment, with mothers being more likely to give up non-local employment compared to fathers. This gender specialisation is mostly driven by opposing job location responses of men and women to individual, household and regional factors. On the one hand, men do not give up non-local employment after childbirth when they are employed in a high-paid job, have a partner who is not participating in the labour market or experience adverse local labour market conditions, suggesting that fathers trade off better employment opportunities with longer commutes. On the other hand, women give up non-local jobs regardless of their earnings level, their partner's labour market status and local economic conditions, which is consistent with mothers specialising in childcare provision compared to fathers.

The impact of childbirth on women's employment has been discussed extensively in the context of developed countries. Constraints on mothers' labour market participation and consequent fall in earnings are characterised as the 'motherhood penalty'. This phenomenon is relatively less explored in developing countries primarily because of the lack of suitable data. In this paper, we use primary data from India, collected via a life history calendar administered to men and women separately. Using an event study method, we estimate the impact of the first childbirth on women's labour market participation. Our main finding is that the birth of the first child does not impose a penalty, in the traditional understanding, on a mother's labour supply. While overall employment does not show any association with childbirth, women's paid work registers a significant increase two to three years post childbirth. This impact is largely due to an increase in informal paid work and driven by women with lower levels of education and from relatively poorer households. Our results suggest that in a developing country like India, characterised by informal labour markets, and early age of childbirth, the impact of motherhood on employment may need an alternate framing rather than one based on developed countries.

An aspect of the Covid-19 pandemic that merits attention is its effects on marriage and childbirth. Although the direct fertility effects of peo- ple getting the virus may be minor, the impact of delayed marriages due to the first preventive lockdown, such as that imposed in Pakistan from March 14 to May 8 2020, and the closure of marriage halls that lasted till September 14 may be non-negligible. These demographic consequences are of particular import to developing countries such as Pakistan where birth rates remain high, marriage is nearly universal, and almost all child- bearing takes place within marriage. Based on historic marriage patterns, we estimate that the delay in nuptiality during the first phase of coron- avirus outbreak may affect about half of the marriages that were to take place during the year. In Pakistan, childbearing begins soon after mar- riage, and about 37% of Pakistani married women give birth to their first child within twelve months of marriage. A sizeable number out of these around 400,000 annual births that occur within twelve months of the mar- riage may consequently be delayed. Postponement of marriages due to the accompanying difficult economic situation and employment precari- ousness should accentuate this fertility effect. The net fertility impact of the Covid-19 outbreak would ultimately depend not only on the delay in marriages but also on the reproductive behavior of existing couples.

The impact of childbirth on the labour market participation of women has been discussed extensively in the context of developed countries, constraints on mothers labour market participation and earnings being characterized as the motherhood penalty . In the developing country context, and specifically for India, similar studies are limited, primarily due to the lack of longitudinal data. In this paper, using a Life History Calendar approach, we collect retrospective information on major events (education, marriage, and childbirth) and the concurrent employment status of men and women over their adult lives. Using an event study method, we estimate the impact of first childbirth on women s labour market participation. Our main finding is that the birth of the first child does not impose a penalty on the mother s labour supply. While, overall, employment does not show any association with childbirth, women s paid work actually registers a significant increase two to three years post childbirth even after controlling for several other factors. The life history analysis also shows that, conditional on participating in the labour market, women are unlikely to have several episodes of entry and exit. We hypothesize that, in a developing country context such as India s, motherhood may not be accompanied by a penalty in terms of labour market participation given the predominance of informal and flexible employment arrangements and the early age of marriage and childbirth for women.

How do life events affect life satisfaction? Previous studies focused on a single event or separate analyses of several events. However, life events are often grouped non-randomly over the lifespan, occur in close succession, and are causally linked, raising the question of how to best analyze them jointly. Here, we used representative German data (SOEP; N = 40,121 individuals; n = 41,402 event occurrences) to contrast three fixed-effects model specifications: First, individual event models in which other events were ignored, which are thus prone to undercontrol bias; second, combined event models which controlled for all events, including subsequent ones, which may induce overcontrol bias; and third, our favored combined models that only controlled for preceding events. In this preferred model, the events of new partner, cohabitation, marriage, and childbirth had positive effects on life satisfaction, while separation, unemployment, and death of partner or child had negative effects. Model specification made little difference for employment- and bereavement-related events. However, for events related to romantic relationships and childbearing, small but consistent differences arose between models. Thus, when estimating effects of new partners, separation, cohabitation, marriage, and childbirth, care should be taken to include appropriate controls (and omit inappropriate ones) to minimize bias.
