The books that we read, whether travel-focused or not, may influence the way in which we understand the process or experience of travel. This multidisciplinary work provides a critical analysis of the inspirational and transformational role that books play in travel imaginings. Does reading a book encourage us to think of travel as exotic, adventurous, transformative, dangerous or educative? Do different genres of books influence a reader's view of travel in multifarious ways? These questions are explored through a literary analysis of an eclectic selection of books spanning the period from the eighteenth century to the present day. Genres covered include historical fiction, children's books, westerns, science-fiction and crime fiction

Looking back on his decades-long work as a university lecturer and researcher, the author of this study reappraises twelve books which were regarded as particularly worth reading during the early stages of his career and, in doing so, confirms their contemporary relevance. Although he adopts a very subjective and personal perspective throughout, he is still able to convey a sense of the atmosphere in liberal arts circles in the 1960s and 1970s. The opinions expressed in the works of Buber, Gehlen, Mitscherlich, Adorno and Metz among others, which he had initially dismissed, provide enlightening insights into current debates.

Paperbacks, which occupy a large corner of the book trade, are overlorded by a competitive oligopoly, although smaller publishing houses also use the format. The format's success is due to minimisation of publishing risk and perfected sales techniques. The sub-sector's vitality exerts an influence on the industry in general and more particularly on publishing policies. The form's outline is hard to define since it has expanded so much, but its further growth as a tightly-strung economic model is threatened by rising costs and the possibility that some of its territory may be annexed by computers.

New technologies are changing our reading habits. Laptops, e-readers, tablets and other handheld devices supply new platforms for reading, and we must learn to manage them by scrolling, clicking or tapping. Reading Today places reading in current literary and cultural contexts in order to analyse how these contexts challenge our conceptions of who reads, what reading is, how we read, where we read, and for what purposes – and then responds to the questions this analysis raises. Is our reading experience becoming a ‘flat’ one? And does reading in a media environment favour quick reading? Alongside these questions, the contributors unpack emerging strategies of reading. They consider, for example, how paying attention to readers’ emotional reactions as an indispensable component of reading affects our conception of the reading process. Other chapters consider how reading can be explored through such topics as experimental literature, the contemporary encyclopedic novel and the healing power of books.
