    Until today, the death of Charles VI and Maria Theresia’s ascending the throne 1740 is seen as a major turning point in Austrian history. But now is the question of whether in different “layers” and “rooms” without doubt fundamental change between 1720 and 1780 not differentiated must be seen against the background of the concept of interface (“Sattelzeit”/Reinhart Koselleck). On the basis of the space “Viennese court”, where the change of rulers in its effects most likely can be documented, attempts from the perspective of different disciplines (the so called “Hofkünste” – literature/poetry, arts, theatre/dance, music) point out continuities and discontinuities. Bis heute wird der Tod Karls VI. und der Regierungsantritt Maria Theresias 1740 als eine einschneidende Zäsur in der österreichischen Geschichte gesehen. Doch nun stellt sich vor dem Hintergrund eines weitergefassten Schnittstellenbegriffes (Reinhart Koselleck) die Frage, ob der zweifellos grundlegende Wandel zwischen 1720 und 1780 nicht differenzierter gesehen werden muss. Ausgehend vom Raum des Wiener Hofes, an dem der Herrscherwechsel in seinen Auswirkungen am ehesten dokumentiert werden kann, wird aus der Sicht sogenannten Hofkünste versucht, Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten aufzuzeigen.

    Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) was the most prolific poet and playwright of his age. During his long life, roughly coincinding with the Dutch Golden Age, he wrote over thirty tragedies. He was a famous figure in political and artistic circles of Amsterdam, a contemporary and acquaintance of Grotius and Rembrandt, but in general well acquainted with Latin humanists, Dutch scholars, authors and Amsterdam burgomasters. He fuelled literary, religious and political debates. His tragedy 'Gysbreght van Aemstel', which was played on the occasion of the opening of the stone city theatre in 1638, was to become the most famous play in Dutch history, and can probably boast holding the record for the longest tradition of annual performance in Europe. In general, Vondel’s texts are literary works in the full sense of the word, complex and inexhasutive; attracting attention throughout the centuries.

    In der Literatur wird die Rolle der Übersetzung als sprachpflegerische Tätigkeit in der Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft oft hervorgehoben. Die konkreten Merkmale der zahlreichen im 17. Jahrhundert angefertigten "fruchtbringenden" Verdeutschungen blieben allerdings bisher unberücksichtigt. Die vorliegende Arbeit möchte einen Beitrag zur Schließung dieser Lücke leisten. Darin werden die Erzehlungen aus den mittlern Zeiten (1624), eine von sieben Übersetzerinnen und einem Übersetzer angefertigten Verdeutschung des italienischen Novellino (1572), unter kulturellem, übersetzerischem und sprachlichem Gesichtspunkt untersucht. Die Entstehung der Erzehlungen im Rahmen der Spracharbeit der Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft wird ergründet, Aspekte der Übersetzungstechnik werden kontrastiv behandelt, eine Auswahl morphologischer und syntaktischer Eigenschaften des Textes wird außerdem analysiert und mit den Aussagen über den richtigen Sprachgebrauch verglichen, die sich in den Werken der Sprachtheoretiker Gueintz, Ratke und Schottelius finden. Die Untersuchung liefert somit neue und wichtige Informationen über die Übersetzungspraxis sowie über die konkrete Spracharbeit der Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft This study examines from a cultural and linguistic perspective the Erzehlungen aus den mittlern Zeiten [Hundred Old Tales] (1624), the first German translation of the Italian Novellino (1572).     Immanent Visitor is the first English-language translation of the work of Bolivia's greatest and most visionary twentieth-century poet. A poète maudit, Jaime Saenz rejected the conventions of polite society and became a monk in service of his own imagination. Apocalyptic and occult in his politics, a denizen of slum taverns, unashamedly bisexual, insistently nocturnal in his artistic affairs, and secretive in his leadership of a select group of writers, Saenz mixed the mystical and baroque with the fantastic, the psychological, and the symbolic. In masterly translations by two poet-translators, Kent Johnson and Forrest Gander, Saenz's strange, innovative, and wildly lyrical poems reveal a literary legacy of fierce compassion and solidarity with indigenous Bolivian cultures and with the destitute, the desperate, and the disenfranchised of that unreal city, La Paz.In long lines, in odes that name desire, with Whitmanesque anaphora, in exclamations and repetitions, Saenz addresses the reader, the beloved, and death in one extended lyrical gesture. The poems are brazenly affecting. Their semantic innovation is notable in the odd heterogeneity of formal and tonal structures that careen unabashedly between modes and moods; now archly lyrical, now arcanely symbolic, now colloquial, now trancelike. As Saenz's reputation continues to grow throughout the world, these inspired translations and the accompanying Spanish texts faithfully convey the poet's unique vision and voice to English-speaking readers

    Le terme « baroque », qui désignait à l'origine une perle irrégulière, s'emploie maintenant couramment comme synonyme de « bizarre, fantaisiste, déplacé ». En ce sens, les œuvres littéraires francophones, produites hors de France, qui font l'objet des études de cet ouvrage, paraissent souvent baroques, et leurs auteurs se perçoivent volontiers comme des « irréguliers », par comparaison avec les écrivains de l'Hexagone dont l'identité semble mieux établie. Le terme « baroque » sert aussi à caractériser une époque de transition - et les styles foisonnants qui l'ont illustrée -, où les certitudes du moyen âge chrétien ne tenaient plus, mais sans qu'elles aient été remplacées encore par les valeurs des temps modernes. En cet autre sens, les nouvelles écritures francophones peuvent aussi être dites baroques. Elles témoignent en effet d'une époque qui a perdu ses repères, entre chaos et catastrophes - la postmodernité, diraient certains -, et d'une esthétique expressionniste, qui ne craint pas l'expérimentation sauvage et qui mêle allègrement les formes héritées du passé et les procédés d'avant-garde, le réel et l'imaginaire. Cet ouvrage permet de découvrir ces écritures « nouvelles, mais possédant déjà une histoire, avec des étapes reconnaissables, des courants successifs ; voire, une préhistoire, si l'on tient compte des importantes traditions orales » qui les ont engendrées.

    This article follows the development of a genre of eighteenth-century texts, explicitly self-designated as ‘cabbalistic’, initially intended for fortune telling by use of a number-alphabet. Such texts were found in Latin and German and eventually emerged from clandestinity into print, though initially they were often anonymous and with false places of printing. As these texts attracted the attention of those interested in promoting the German vernacular and demonstrating the poetic capacity of that language, they were increasingly identified as ‘paragrams’, lost much of their mantic purpose and increasingly became an inventive technique for the stimulation of the composition of honorific verse.
