    In crossed approaches, the themes developed in this book bring a new look at the forms, uses and stakes of artistic lexicography in modern times.

    In a perspective of circulation of concepts and practices, and permeability of the artistic borders, the word proves to be a precious laboratory of the practice of the artistic practice and a field of exploration of the cultural networks that cross and make Europe .

    Through the development of a language, books on art whose publications are growing in the north of the Alps from 1600, aim at the construction of a common knowledge for the use of painters and amateurs.

    Their many translations, published since the modern era, also testify to their role of diffusion agent in constant adaptation to the readership to which they are addressed. Understanding strategies and processes of invention and transfer of specific terminology to aesthetic expression becomes an important issue. Words, indeed, are not interchangeable. By succeeding or overlapping, even if they are contradictory, the different senses give thickness and subtlety to the concept.

    The journey of a notion into time and space also contributes to broadening our understanding of a cultural history between universality and identity within the artistic diversity that characterizes modern Europe. Dans des approches croisées, les thématiques développées dans cet ouvrage apportent un regard neuf sur les formes, usages et enjeux de la lexicographie artistique à l’époque moderne.

    Dans une perspective de circulation des concepts et des pratiques, et de perméabilité des frontières artistiques, le mot se révèle être un précieux laboratoire de l'exercice de la pratique artistique et un champ d'exploration des réseaux culturels qui traversent et font l’Europe.

    À travers l'élaboration d'un langage, les livres sur l'art dont les publications se multiplient au Nord des Alpes à partir de 1600, visent à la construction d'un savoir commun à l'usage des peintres et des amateurs.

    Leurs nombreuses traductions, publiées dès l'époque moderne, témoignent également de leur rôle d'agent de diffusion en constante adaptation au lectorat auquel ils s'adressent.     For too long, the Earth has been used to ground thought instead of bending it; such grounding leaves the planet as nothing but a stage for phenomenology, deconstruction, or other forms of anthropocentric philosophy. In far too much continental philosophy, the Earth is a cold, dead place enlivened only by human thought—either as a thing to be exploited, or as an object of nostalgia. Geophilosophy seeks instead to question the ground of thinking itself, the relation of the inorganic to the capacities and limits of thought. This book constructs an eclectic variant of geophilosophy through engagements with digging machines, nuclear waste, cyclones and volcanoes, giant worms, secret vessels, decay, subterranean cities, hell, demon souls, black suns, and xenoarcheaology, via continental theory (Nietzsche, Schelling, Deleuze, et alia) and various cultural objects such as horror films, videogames, and weird Lovecraftian fictions, with special attention to Speculative Realism and the work of Reza Negarestani. In a time where the earth as a whole is threatened by ecological collapse, On an Ungrounded Earth generates a perversely realist account of the earth as a dynamic engine materially invading and upsetting our attempts to reduce it to merely the ground beneath our feet.

According to Mircan, “The […] exhibition reflects on another projection machine, whose history and consequences, unlike cinema, are circumscribed by national boundaries, specific histories, and ideological configurations. The regime of production and representation of socialist realism radicalizes the violence that the creation of a new image does to its subject: it intensifies the fraught relation between refashioned representation and that which is represented. Its insistence on a particular, projective notion of reality is commensurate with the coercion of daily — cultural, social, emotional — life into a grid whose perspective lines and vanishing points carry heavy ideological charges.     77 essays cover nearly 250 concepts. The entries, appearing in traditional alphabetical order, outline the boundaries of a new reading of the painting as seen through the eye of the painter as well as through the eye of the spectator. Indeed, the "speaking painting" not only invites the spectator into the painter's studio to show how the painting is done, but introduces him to the painting itself, indicating what to see and how to see.

In fact, Galilei studied at the art academy, which is where his friendship with Ludovico Cigoli developed, who later became the official court artist.     Modelle sind allgegenwärtig: man begegnet ihnen in Technik, Kunst und Wissenschaft. In diesem Buch erklärt Bernd Mahr, was Modelle sind, wie sie funktionieren und was sie leisten. Eine Person, die ein Maler porträtiert, ein maßstabsgerecht verkleinertes Auto, das im Windkanal getestet wird, ein Satz von Differentialgleichungen, die meteorologische Veränderungen in der Atmosphäre beschreiben: diese Objekte werden gleichermaßen als Modell bezeichnet. Angesichts der Unterschiedlichkeit solcher Beispiele argumentiert Bernd Mahr, dass die Frage nach den Eigenschaften, die ein Gegenstand aufweisen muss, um ein Modell zu sein, verfehlt ist. Eine wirklich allgemeine Modelltheorie, die all diese Beispiele erklären kann, muss zwischen dem Modell selbst und dem Modellgegenstand unterscheiden. Es gibt keine genau abgegrenzte Menge von Eigenschaften, die ein Objekt zum Modell machen. Vielmehr wird im jeweiligen Kontext geurteilt, dass ein in bestimmter Weise aufgefasster Gegenstand ein Modell „von etwas für etwas ist“. In den Kapiteln des ersten Teils des Buches wird diese Grundidee einer allgemeinen Modelltheorie entwickelt und theoretisch fundiert. Die Beiträge des zweiten Teils befassen sich mit den Modellen der Logik, Mathematik und Informatik und der abschließende dritte Teil geht der Rolle von Modellen in Kunst und Ästhetik nach.

Naturphilosophie im Kontext der europäischen Romantik nach.Die Romantik als eine geistige Bewegung entfaltete sich in Europa auf Grundlage der allgemeinen Überzeugung, dass Kunst eine Form von Wissenschaft sei und umgekehrt. Viele Dichter und Künstler sowie Naturwissenschaftler waren bestrebt, empirische und kreative Formen der Welterkundung miteinander zu verbinden.     Modelle sind allgegenwärtig: man begegnet ihnen in Technik, Kunst und Wissenschaft. In diesem Buch erklärt Bernd Mahr, was Modelle sind, wie sie funktionieren und was sie leisten. Eine Person, die ein Maler porträtiert, ein maßstabsgerecht verkleinertes Auto, das im Windkanal getestet wird, ein Satz von Differentialgleichungen, die meteorologische Veränderungen in der Atmosphäre beschreiben: diese Objekte werden gleichermaßen als Modell bezeichnet. Angesichts der Unterschiedlichkeit solcher Beispiele argumentiert Bernd Mahr, dass die Frage nach den Eigenschaften, die ein Gegenstand aufweisen muss, um ein Modell zu sein, verfehlt ist. Eine wirklich allgemeine Modelltheorie, die all diese Beispiele erklären kann, muss zwischen dem Modell selbst und dem Modellgegenstand unterscheiden. Es gibt keine genau abgegrenzte Menge von Eigenschaften, die ein Objekt zum Modell machen. Vielmehr wird im jeweiligen Kontext geurteilt, dass ein in bestimmter Weise aufgefasster Gegenstand ein Modell „von etwas für etwas ist“. In den Kapiteln des ersten Teils des Buches wird diese Grundidee einer allgemeinen Modelltheorie entwickelt und theoretisch fundiert. Die Beiträge des zweiten Teils befassen sich mit den Modellen der Logik, Mathematik und Informatik und der abschließende dritte Teil geht der Rolle von Modellen in Kunst und Ästhetik nach.

With his ready-mades Marcel Duchamp embro-iled the art business in a debate about the inclusion and exclusion of every-day objects in ‘high’ art. Since then, it has been possible to cite Arthur Danto and talk of the „end of art“. In retros-pect it becomes clear that Duchamp’s expansion of what constitutes art resulted in an explosive increase of art objects and concepts of art, a trend still evident today. Politische Theorie ist, wie Fransoni klarstellt, keine Theorie der Politik, sondern eine Theorie, die Dinge, hier die Kunst, im Lichte des Politischen, d.h. im Sinne menschlicher Pluralität begreift. Im Lichte des Politischen finden das Kunstwerk und andere gängige Begriffe der Kunstkritik neue und überraschende Definitionen. Zugleich wird deutlich, wie das Kunstwerk entscheidende Beziehungen des Politischen, etwa zwischen Freiheit und Welt, manifestiert. Eine politische Theorie betrachtet Kunst letztlich aus der gleichen Perspektive der Pluralität, die Kunst zusammen mit anderen Konzepten des Politischen zu definieren hilft. The book enters the debate on the relationship between aesthetics and politics with an original and comprehensive theory. As Fransoni makes clear, a political theory is not a theory of politics, but a theory that deals with things, in this case art, in order to read them in the light of the political, i.e. in relation to human plurality. In the light of the political, the work of art and other common notions of art criticism find new and surprising definitions. At the same time, it is revealed how the work of art manifests some of the crucial relationships of politics, such as that between freedom and world. A political theory ultimately looks at art from the same perspective of plurality that art, together with other concepts of the political, helps to define.

Images are not born as art. With his ready-mades Marcel Duchamp embro-iled the art business in a debate about the inclusion and exclusion of every-day objects in ‘high’ art. Since then, it has been possible to cite Arthur Danto and talk of the „end of art“. In retros-pect it becomes clear that Duchamp’s expansion of what constitutes art resulted in an explosive increase of art objects and concepts of art, a trend still evident today. Moreover, images and objects from non-art areas with their own tradition provoke the art system by adapting art criteria. The contributions in this book address pro-vocations and interventions, the trans-fer or melding of image and object cultures and explore images, objects and actions in their cultural contexts to get to the bottom of the art system that is in a state of dissolution.
