    La 4e de couverture indique : "La correspondance intégrale entre Romain Rolland et Stefan Zweig, le maître et son disciple, est inédite en France. Ce sont près de 500 lettres de part et d'autre. Ces lettres constituent un témoignage irremplaçable sur les pensées et la création de deux intellectuels européens majeurs de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Elles entraînent le lecteur dans une époque à la fois bouleversée et bouleversante, celle de la Première Guerre mondiale - et de ses conséquences. Toutes ces lettres sont écrites en français sauf 103 lettres de Stefan Zweig, qui sont en allemand et ont fait l'objet d'une traduction pour l'édition présente. Il s'agit des lettres des années de guerre, où la censure autrichienne exerçait un contrôle sur le départ du courrier vers l'étranger. Cette correspondance garde une extraordinaire modernité comme l'a bien montré l'exemplarité de l'amitié qui avait uni les deux hommes pendant trente années, préfigurant une entente plus large à venir entre les deux rives du Rhin

    Né en 1881 dans une famille aisée, Stefan Zweig publia son premier recueil de poèmes à l'âge de 19 ans. Quoi qu'il écrivît - essais, articles, nouvelles, romans, biographies -, il ne connut que le succès. A partir des années 1930, il devint l'auteur vivant le plus traduit à travers le monde. Il était, aimait-il à plaisanter, l'un des dix auteurs de langue allemande à pouvoir se permettre de fuir.Après l'arrivée au pouvoir d'Hitler, cet auteur célébré par tous, chantre de l'humanisme international, amoureux des arts et des lettres, se retrouva, en l'espace de quelques années, contraint à un exil solitaire qui l'éloigna peu à peu de tout ce qui avait guidé et fait sa vie. Il quitta l'Autriche pour s'installer à Londres, puis à Bath, avant de partir pour l'Amérique - New York, Ossining, Rio et enfin Petrópolis où, en 1942, il mit fin à ses jours.Dans cet essai brillant et très documenté, George Prochnik retrace le destin tragique de Stefan Zweig, et à travers lui, c'est tout un pan de l'histoire culturelle européenne et américaine que l'on découvre, mais aussi la lutte de ceux qui durent abandonner l'une pour embrasser l'autre. Zweig devient ainsi, par ses textes et sa pensée, le symbole de la fin d'une époque et de l'implosion de l'Europe en tant qu'idéal d'une civilisation occidentale éclairée.

    Born in Vienna in 1881, Stefan Zweig was one of the most respected authors of his time. Foreseeing Nazi Germany s domination of Europe, Zweig left Austria in 1933. In 1941, following a successful lecture tour of South America and several months in New York, Stefan Zweig and his wife Lotte emigrated to Brazil. Despairing at Europe s future and feeling increasingly isolated, the Zweigs committed suicide together in 1942. Stefan Zweig was an incessant correspondent but as the 1930s progressed, it became difficult for him to maintain contact with friends and colleagues. As Zweig's correspondence all but ceased with the outbreak of World War II, little is known about his final years. Even less is known about Lotte Zweig, his second-wife, secretary and travel-companion. This book provides an analysis of the Zweigs time together and for the first time reproduces personal letters, written by the couple in Argentina and Brazil, along with editorial commentary. Furthermore, Lotte finally emerges from her husband s shadows, with the letters offering significant insights into their relationship and her experience of exile.
