    This book is the first integral study of the history of imitative or co-creative artistic work that has led to the creation of cello transcriptions and arrangements. Of an interdisciplinary character, it explores the views that have shaped approaches to the art of cello performance and describes the role of cello transcriptions and the development of instrument making. The book also addresses issues related to philosophy, history of aesthetics and visual arts, including iconography presenting historical images of the cello. The theoretical part contains definitions and systematics that make it possible to categorise the vast amount of transcriptions, as well as descriptions and suggested recordings of a selection of those transcriptions.

    Ein Instrument zwischen zwei Buchdeckeln das Cello in der Literatur! In einer sehr persönlichen Sichtweise untersucht der Autor die Spuren, die das inzwischen mehr als zweihundert Jahre alte Streichinstrument in der Literatur hinterlassen hat. Dabei spielt das Cello bei den unterschiedlichsten Schriftstellern auf die ein oder andere Art eine Rolle. Das Spektrum reicht vom erfahrenen Romancier über Krimiautoren, Zeitungskolumnisten, Dichter, CellistInnen, Musikwissenschaftler, Geigenbauer, Kinderbuchautoren, Verfasser von Liebesromanen und Romandebütanten bis hin zu dem Nobelpreisträger für Literatur Kazuo Ishiguro. Was es nun im Einzelnen ist, was das Cello für diese sehr verschiedenen "Schriftstellertypen" interessant macht, was also eigentlich die Faszination des Cellos ausmacht, das zeigen ihre Bücher, ihre Romane, Erzählungen und sonstigen Schriften.
