    "From Catullus to Horace, the tradition of Latin erotic poetry produced works of literature which are still read throughout the world. Ovid’s Amores, written in the first century BC, is arguably the best-known and most popular collection in this tradition. This book contain embedded audio files of the original text read aloud by Aleksandra Szypowska. Born in 43 BC, Ovid was educated in Rome in preparation for a career in public services before finding his calling as a poet. He may have begun writing his Amores as early as 25 BC. Although influenced by poets such as Catullus, Ovid demonstrates a much greater awareness of the funny side of love than any of his predecessors. The Amores is a collection of romantic poems centered on the poet’s own complicated love life: he is involved with a woman, Corinna, who is sometimes unobtainable, sometimes compliant, and often difficult and domineering. Whether as a literary trope, or perhaps merely as a human response to the problems of love in the real world, the principal focus of these poems is the poet himself, and his failures, foolishness, and delusions.

    By the time he was in his forties, Ovid was Rome’s most important living poet; his Metamorphoses, a kaleidoscopic epic poem about love and hatred among the gods and mortals, is one of the most admired and influential books of all time. In AD 8, Ovid was exiled by Augustus to Romania, for reasons that remain obscure. He died there in AD 17.

    The Amores were originally published in five books, but reissued around 1 AD in their current three-book form. This edition of the first book of the collection contains the complete Latin text of Book 1, along with commentary, notes and full vocabulary. Both entertaining and thought-provoking, this book will provide an invaluable aid to students of Latin and general readers alike."

    The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes steht das Werk des türkischen Autors und Übersetzers aus dem Deutschen Sabahattin Ali, der mit seinem Roman Kürk Mantolu Madonna (Die Madonna im Pelzmantel) zu posthumem Ruhm gelangte. Der Roman, der zum Großteil in Deutschland spielt, und andere seiner Werke werden unter Aspekten der Weltliteratur, (kultureller) Übersetzung und Intertextualität diskutiert. Damit reicht der Fokus weit über die bislang im Vordergrund stehende interkulturelle Liebesgeschichte in der Madonna hinaus. Weitere Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit Zafer Şenocaks Essaysammlung Deutschsein und dem transkulturellen Lernen mit Bilderbüchern. Ein Interview mit Selim Özdoğan rundet diese Ausgabe ab.

Exemplarisch leuchten zehn Einzelstudien das polyvalente Deutungsspektrum der antiken Göttin im 17. Jahrhundert aus, um das Verhältnis zwischen dichterischer Ablehnung und Aneignung sowie die Funktionen verschiedener Figurationen (Paris, Mars, Adonis) erstmals zusammenhängend zu erfassen Venus, the goddess of beauty and love, is omnipresent in the arts as a reflexive figure and projective surface for ideas of love. Ten individual studies serve as examples of the polyvalent interpretations of the ancient goddess in the 17th century, and for the first time, include considerations of the relationship between poetic rejection and approval and the function of various figurations (Paris, Mars, Adonis)

    Dem Troianer Aeneas ist es vom Schicksal bestimmt, nach Italien zu ziehen und ein Urahn der Römer zu werden. In Vergils Aeneis trifft er die Entscheidung, Troia zu verlassen, erst spät – zu spät, wie manche kritisieren. Aber solche Kritik übergeht die Figurenperspektive: Anders als das Lesepublikum des Epos und anders als der für Dido vom Untergang Troias erzählende Aeneas kennt der in Troia kämpfende Aeneas die eigene Bestimmung noch nicht.Dieses Buch ist eine Annäherung an die Aeneis als Erzähltext. Es stellt – unter steter Berücksichtigung der unterschiedlichen epistemischen Perspektiven – die narrative Kohärenz des Epos heraus. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht die Erzählung der Hauptfigur in den Büchern 2–3, und hier insbesondere die Schilderung der letzten Stunden von Troia in Buch 2. Neu diskutiert werden dabei unter anderem Figurenrede und Gleichnisse als markante Formen epischer Textgestaltung, pietas, die fata, die Funktion der Venus sowie die umstrittene Helena-Szene.

    Venus, die Göttin der Schönheit und Liebe, ist in den Künsten als ästhetische Reflexionsfigur und Projektionsfläche von Liebeskonzepten omnipräsent. Exemplarisch leuchten zehn Einzelstudien das polyvalente Deutungsspektrum der antiken Göttin im 17. Jahrhundert aus, um das Verhältnis zwischen dichterischer Ablehnung und Aneignung sowie die Funktionen verschiedener Figurationen (Paris, Mars, Adonis) erstmals zusammenhängend zu erfassen. Venus, the goddess of beauty and love, is omnipresent in the arts as a reflexive figure and projective surface for ideas of love. Ten individual studies serve as examples of the polyvalent interpretations of the ancient goddess in the 17th century, and for the first time, include considerations of the relationship between poetic rejection and approval and the function of various figurations (Paris, Mars, Adonis).
