In this lively literary history of a time before "Orwellian" entered the cultural lexicon, Michael Robertson reintroduces us to a vital strain of utopianism that seized the imaginations of late nineteenth-century American and British writers.The Last Utopians delves into the biographies of four key figures--Edward Bellamy, William Morris, Edward Carpenter, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman—who lived during an extraordinary period of literary and social experimentation. The publication of Bellamy's Looking Backward in 1888 opened the floodgates of an unprecedented wave of utopian writing. Morris, the Arts and Crafts pioneer, was a committed socialist whose News from Nowhere envisions a workers' Arcadia. Carpenter boldly argued that homosexuals constitute a utopian vanguard. Gilman, a women's rights activist and the author of "The Yellow Wallpaper," wrote numerous utopian fictions, including Herland, a visionary tale of an all-female society.These writers, Robertson shows, shared a belief in radical equality, imagining an end to class and gender hierarchies and envisioning new forms of familial and romantic relationships. They held liberal religious beliefs about a universal spirit uniting humanity. They believed in social transformation through nonviolent means and were committed to living a simple life rooted in a restored natural world. And their legacy remains with us today, as Robertson describes in entertaining firsthand accounts of contemporary utopianism, ranging from Occupy Wall Street to a Radical Faerie retreat.

He also shows how self-defeating the exercise could be. In an era of political and religious conflict, writers asserted themselves as the authors of social and political ideals. But they also constructed systems in which the assertion of utopian mastery would have no place, and an ideal politics could no longer be imagined. This study will interest political and cultural historians as well as literary critics

    Was ist Politik? Was ist ein Roman? In der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts standen beide Fragen noch offen. Eben in dieser Offenheit, behauptet die Studie, liegt eine Möglichkeit, die Konvergenz von Gattungslehre und Staatslehre näher zu untersuchen. Den Ausgangspunkt bieten die 'Gattungsverhandlungen', die in den Romanen Wielands und Jean Pauls stattfinden und durch die beide Autoren versuchen, sich über die politischen und poetologischen Bedingungen ihres Schreibens klar zu werden. Den gattungsgeschichtlichen Rahmen bilden dabei die Transformationen der Gattung des 'Staatsromans' an der Schwelle zwischen Barock und Neuzeit. What is politics? What is a novel? In the mid 18th century these questions were still unresolved. The study exploits this state of affairs for closer investigation of the convergence between genre theory and political theory. It takes its bearings from the "genre negotiations" to be found in the novels of Wieland and Jean Paul, disquisitions in which these authors attempt to arrive at conclusions about the political and poetological conditions under which they are writing. In terms of the history of the (German) novel, the background is formed by the transformations undergone by the 'Staatsroman' (political novel) genre on the threshold from the Baroque to the modern age. Morris, the Arts and Crafts pioneer, was a committed socialist whose News from Nowhere envisions a workers' Arcadia. Carpenter boldly argued that homosexuals constitute a utopian vanguard. Gilman, a women's rights activist and the author of "The Yellow Wallpaper," wrote numerous utopian fictions, including Herland, a visionary tale of an all-female society.These writers, Robertson shows, shared a belief in radical equality, imagining an end to class and gender hierarchies and envisioning new forms of familial and romantic relationships. They held liberal religious beliefs about a universal spirit uniting humanity. They believed in social transformation through nonviolent means and were committed to living a simple life rooted in a restored natural world. And their legacy remains with us today, as Robertson describes in entertaining firsthand accounts of contemporary utopianism, ranging from Occupy Wall Street to a Radical Faerie retreat.

    Was ist Politik? Was ist ein Roman? In der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts standen beide Fragen noch offen. Eben in dieser Offenheit, behauptet die Studie, liegt eine Möglichkeit, die Konvergenz von Gattungslehre und Staatslehre näher zu untersuchen. Den Ausgangspunkt bieten die 'Gattungsverhandlungen', die in den Romanen Wielands und Jean Pauls stattfinden und durch die beide Autoren versuchen, sich über die politischen und poetologischen Bedingungen ihres Schreibens klar zu werden. Den gattungsgeschichtlichen Rahmen bilden die Transformationen der Gattung des 'Staatsromans'. Diese Gattung geht auf barocke und sogar antike Muster zurück, die ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein tradiert wurden. Forschungsgeschichtlich allerdings ist die Gattung in Verruf geraten, weil sie nicht die Ansprüche einer radikal antistaatlichen und utopischen Literatur erfüllen konnte, sondern der bestehenden politischen Wirklichkeit und ihrer Optimierung verpflichtet blieb. In dieser Studie wird dagegen ein dezidiert historischer Blick auf den Staatsroman der Aufklärung geboten, der literarische Topoi wie Fürstenerziehung, verborgene Prinzen, redliche Männer an korrupten Höfen und Geheimbünde als Mittel einer Vermittlung zwischen bürgerlicher Moral und absolutistischer Politik verstehen will.

    Als in der deutschen Spätaufklärung ›Anthropologie‹ und Ästhetik eine enge Allianz eingehen, stürzt dies eine alte Gattung in die Krise, die nun zum anti-anthropologischen Textmuster schlechthin avanciert: die ›literarische Utopie‹. Fiktionale Texte über Gesellschaften vernunftautonomer Individuen widersprechen jenem neuen Menschenbild, das die Macht körperlicher Konditionen über das Denken und Handeln betont. Gerade wegen ihres zweifelhaften Rufs bietet die ›literarische Utopie‹ aber zugleich Gelegenheit, die ›Anthropologie‹ als problematischen und politisch brisanten Wissensbestand zu reflektieren, hinter dem die Nihilismusgefahr wie ein Gespenst lauert. Untersucht wird daher, wie Autoren der selbstreflexiven Aufklärung und Frühromantik mit diesem Textmuster auf die ›Rehabilitation der Sinnlichkeit‹ und die dadurch verursachten ethischen, theologischen, politischen und ästhetischen Probleme reagieren. Literaturhistorisch diskutiert die Studie am Fall einer Gattung Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten zwischen Spätaufklärung und Frühromantik, systematisch zielt sie auf eine Modellierung von Literatur- und Gattungsgeschichte als Problemgeschichte.
