    Merkur-Preis 2021 Die komparatistische Studie untersucht die Vorstellung des Versagens als eine Diskurs- und Denkgröße, die sich in westlichen kapitalistischen Gesellschaften erst in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts herauszubilden beginnt. Das ,Versagen' hat seinen Ursprung im Feld der Technowissenschaften, greift um 1900 auf die Humanwissenschaften über und wird schließlich in Disziplinen wie der Psychoanalyse oder der Pädagogik mit der Dimension eines biographischen Fortschreitens verwoben. Das Buch zeigt anhand von Lektüren von Melville, Flaubert, Svevo und Kafka, wie die Kategorie des Versagens etwa zeitgleich auch in die Literatur einsinkt und dort sowohl gefestigt als auch unterlaufen wird. An der Denkfigur des Versagens lässt sich, so ein Fazit der Arbeit, eine seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert zunehmende, kapitalistisch grundierte Stigmatisierung von Subjekten ablesen, die sich gesellschaftlichen Erwartungshaltungen gegenüber widerständig verhalten - womit in der modernen Denkfigur des Versagens zugleich eine verdeckte Geschichte des Willens in der Moderne eingelassen ist, oder genauer: eine Geschichte des Widerwillens gegenüber Erwartungshaltungen und Normen. This comparatist study is the first to address failure, a historically recent figure of thought. By looking at selected literary works and scholarly discourses, it examines the origins and implications of the genuinely modern concept of the non-functioning subject, which began taking shape around 1850. It investigates texts by authors like Gustave Flaubert, Italo Svevo, Franz Kafka, and Sigmund Freud.
