For all the scholarship devoted to Mary Shelley's English novel Frankenstein, there has been surprisingly little attention paid to its role in American culture, and virtually none to its racial resonances in the United States. In Black Frankenstein, Elizabeth Young identifies and interprets the figure of a black American Frankenstein monster as it appears with surprising frequency throughout nineteenth- and twentieth-century U.S. culture, in fiction, film, essays, oratory, painting, and other media, and in works by both whites and African Americans.Black Frankenstein stories, Young argues, effect four kinds of racial critique: they humanize the slave; they explain, if not justify, black violence; they condemn the slaveowner; and they expose the instability of white power. The black Frankenstein's monster has served as a powerful metaphor for reinforcing racial hierarchy—and as an even more powerful metaphor for shaping anti-racist critique. Illuminating the power of parody and reappropriation, Black Frankenstein tells the story of a metaphor that continues to matter to literature, culture, aesthetics, and politics

Long description: Is the family in crisis? Or do crises crystallize in families' lived realities? Families as constitutive units of all social architectures are central to our democracies. In this book, scholars from cultural, gender, and media studies, lawyers, sociologists, and historians discuss how today's rainbow variety of families crosses borders and how cultural texts - sitcoms, films, novels, short stories, and political magazines from Europe (Germany, Italy, Spain) and the US - (de-)construct, take part in, and mirror family discourses around topics such as fatherhoods, motherhoods, reproductive decisions, adoption, marriage, divorce, poverty, welfare, war, and the rhetoric of the nuclear family Biographical note: Eva-Sabine Zehelein is an adjunct professor of American studies at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and fellow at the Brandeis Women's Studies Research Center. She specializes in 20th and 21st century North American literatures and (popular) cultures and leads the international and interdisciplinary research group »Family Matters«. Andrea Carosso is a professor of American literature and culture at the Department of International Languages and Literatures at Università di Torino, where he coordinates the post-graduate program in English and American Studies. His books include Cold War Narratives. American Culture in the 1950s (2012), Urban Cultures in the United States (2010), and Invito alla lettura di Vladimir Nabokov (1999). Aida Rosende-Pérez is an assistant professor at the University of the Balearic Islands, where she teaches in the fields of American literature and culture, as well as gender studies. Her research has focused primarily on the politics and poetics of transnational feminism, with emphasis on the narratives and (audio)visual productions of contemporary Irish women writers and artists

Lesbian web series narrate female-centered stories, strengthen identity construction, and generate transnational communities beyond cultural barriers. Julia Obermayr explores the first definition of a new format, the first representations of lesbian women in US-American, Canadian, and Spanish web series from 2007 and onward, as well as their reciprocal effects regarding identity construction and community building of their transnational, mainly female, audience. The analyzed corpus comprises scenes taken from Venice the Series (2009) and its backstory »Otalia« on the soap opera Guiding Light (1952-2009), Seeking Simone (2009), Out With Dad (2010), Féminin/ Féminin (2014), Chica Busca Chica (2007) and its cinematic sequel De Chica En Chica (2015), as well as Notas Aparte (2016) Biographical note: Julia Obermayr (Dr. phil.), born in 1981, did her doctorate at the University of Graz and in LGBT+ archives in Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, Madrid, and Barcelona. She specializes in cultural studies, lesbian/LGBT studies and diversity, minority identities, and female representations in audiovisual media, mainly in Romance speaking Europe and the Americas

This paper compiles the Intertemporal Public Sector Balance Sheets for all G7 countries and examines their relationship with government borrowing costs. In 2018, all G7 countries have negative Intertemporal Net Financial Worth (INFW), falling short of their intertemporal budget constraint. A decomposition of the evolution of INFW shows that short-term fluctuations are mainly driven by fiscal policy changes, while in the long run demographic changes and health and pension obligations play a larger role. We find that on average a 10 percentage point of GDP increase in INFW reduces the (future) 10-1 year sovereign yield curve spread by 2.8 basis points. This results suggest that financial markets pay attention to governments' future policy obligations, in addition to its current assets and liabilities
