This open access book focuses on how and why digital games and gambling are increasingly intertwined and asks “does this matter?” Looking at how “loot boxes” became the poster child for the convergence of gambling and gaming, Wardle traces how we got here. She argues that the intersection between gambling and gaming cultures has a long lineage, one that can be traced back throughout the 20th century but also incorporates more recent trends like the poker boom of the 1990s, the development of social media gambling products and the development of skin betting markets. Underpinned by changing technology, which facilitated new ways to bet, trade and play, the intersection between gaming and gambling cultures and products has accelerated within the last decade – and shows little signs of stopping. Wardle explores what this means for our understanding of risk, how gaming and gambling entities use each other for commercial advantage, and crucially explores what young people think of this, before making recommendations for action.

Italy and the UK experienced a radical re-organisation of urban space following the devastation of many towns and cities in the Second World War. The need to rebuild led to an intellectual and cultural exchange between a wave of talented architects, urbanists and architectural historians in the two countries. Post-war Architecture between Italy and the UK studies this exchange, exploring how the connections and mutual influences contributed to the formation of a distinctive stance towards Internationalism, notwithstanding the countries’ contrasting geographic and climatic conditions, levels of economic and industrial development, and social structures. Topics discussed in the volume include the influence of Italian historic town centres on British modernist and Brutalist architectural approaches to the design of housing and university campuses as public spaces; post-war planning concepts such as the precinct; the tensions between British critics and Italian architects that paved the way for British postmodernism; and the role of architectural education as a melting pot of mutual influence. It draws on a wealth of archival and original materials to present insights into the personal relationships, publications, exhibitions and events that provided the crucible for the dissemination of ideas and typologies across cultural borders. Offering new insights into the transcultural aspects of European architectural history in the post-war years, and its legacy, this volume is vital reading for architectural and urban historians, planners and students, as well as social historians of the European post-war period.

Food is fundamental to health and social participation, yet food poverty has increased in the global North. Adopting a realist ontology and taking a comparative case approach, Families and Food in Hard Times addresses the global problem of economic retrenchment and how those most affected are those with the least resources. Based on research carried out with low-income families with children aged 11-15, this timely book examines food poverty in the UK, Portugal and Norway in the decade following the 2008 financial crisis. It examines the resources to which families have access in relation to public policies, local institutions and kinship and friendship networks, and how they intersect. Through ‘thick description’ of families’ everyday lives, it explores the ways in which low income impacts upon practices of household food provisioning, the types of formal and informal support on which families draw to get by, the provision and role of school meals in children’s lives, and the constraints upon families’ social participation involving food. Providing extensive and intensive knowledge concerning the conditions and experiences of low-income parents as they endeavour to feed their families, as well as children’s perspectives of food and eating in the context of low income, the book also draws on the European social science literature on food and families to shed light on the causes and consequences of food poverty in austerity Europe.

Through a comparion of etnographic research in the UK and Brazil, this chapter has examined now changing scientific and medical understandings regarding the origin, genealogical history and patrimony of the so-called Ashkenazi mutations have been diversely taken up and put to use in clinical/research contexts. It has explored the very differing differing differing consequences this can have for the way health care practitioners, scientists, patients and their families engage with and incorporate knowledge about hereditary BRCA mutations into scientific narratives, clinical practices and understandings of clinical/familial risk and identity.

The main aim of this book is to provide a broad view of the issues surrounding literary tourism and to provide a theoretical and practical guide to how literary tourism is evolving and affecting the current Western tourism market. Its scope encompasses a wide array of narratives, ranging from the effects of the classic novel on destinations through to commercial book festivals and their power to attract tourists. The book consists of 16 chapters that cover theory, practical applications and case studies. The theory section encompasses theoretical aspects of different disciplines such as anthropology, politics and literature and illustrates how these can be found within literary tourism texts. The practical applications section has a number of narratives demonstrating the practical nature of literary tourism and how it, as a product, can be used to develop and extend a tourism destination. Finally, the case studies section examines specific examples of literary tourism and their relationship with destinations, with the aim of providing insights into successful literary destinations.

Does a European Identity exist? "European" depends on the individual concept of what signify "Europe". It could be defined by linguistic, religious, legal, geographic, cultural, historical, economic, or political concepts. Often it is a very individual mix out of all concepts. Sometimes "Europe" is use as a synonym of "the EU". This work does try to define neither "Europe" nor "European". The aim of this paper is to contribute as a discussion paper to the discourse on the existence of such an identity. It shows the results of surveys in 2020, 2021 and 2022 made in all regions of Spain, the UK, France, Italy, and Germany. The Spanish autonomous communities and cities have been surveyed in all the mentioned years, Italian regions and the regions of the UK in 2021 and 2022 and the German Länder and French regions in 2022. The results show that there is a European Identity with interesting differences over the years. Regardless the connection to a European organisation, such like the EU, the majority of the participants of almost all surveyed regions feel European.

We suggest that stabilizing the baseline income can make low-wage workers more tolerant towards high income earners. We present evidence of this attitude in the UK by exploiting the introduction of the National Minimum Wage (NMW), which institutionally sets a baseline pay reducing the risk of income losses and providing a clear reference point for British workers at the lower end of the income distribution. Based on data from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), we show that workers who benefited from the NMW program became relatively more tolerant of high incomes and more likely to support and vote for the Conservative Party. As far as tolerance for high incomes is related to tolerance of inequality, our results may suggest that people advocate for equality also because they fear income losses below a given reference point.

This paper compiles the Intertemporal Public Sector Balance Sheets for all G7 countries and examines their relationship with government borrowing costs. In 2018, all G7 countries have negative Intertemporal Net Financial Worth (INFW), falling short of their intertemporal budget constraint. A decomposition of the evolution of INFW shows that short-term fluctuations are mainly driven by fiscal policy changes, while in the long run demographic changes and health and pension obligations play a larger role. We find that on average a 10 percentage point of GDP increase in INFW reduces the (future) 10-1 year sovereign yield curve spread by 2.8 basis points. This results suggest that financial markets pay attention to governments' future policy obligations, in addition to its current assets and liabilities
