Aufbauend auf Diskursen und Betrachtungen unterschiedlicher wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen (wie der Techniksoziologie, der Innovationsforschung oder der Kommunikationstheorie) erarbeitet Marcel Münchow ein designwissenschaftliches Theoriegebilde zur Deutung dieser bidirektionalen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Konventionen und Innovationen im Kontext der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion.

Thre are effects on communication in the public sphere, on science and agriculture, as well as the interactions with law, the economy and ecology the contributors to this volume explore these and other aspects of digitalisation from various theoretical perspectives. In doing so, they open up perspectives that allow digitalisation to be understood and explained as socio-technical change. Vom Algorithmus bis zum Sensor umfasst die Digitalisierung eine Vielfalt technologischer Innovationen. Ebenso facettenreich sind die Dimensionen, in denen sie die Gesellschaft transformiert und gleichzeitig von ihr geprägt wird.     This book provides new critical and methodological approaches to digital humanities, intended to guide technical development as well as critical analysis. Informed by the history of technology and culture and new perspectives on modernity, Smithies grounds his claims in the engineered nature of computing devices and their complex entanglement with our communities, our scholarly traditions, and our sense of self. The distorting mentalité of the digital modern informs our attitudes to computers and computationally intensive research, leading scholars to reject articulations of meaning that admit the interdependence of humans and the complex socio-technological systems we are embedded in. By framing digital humanities with the digital modern, researchers can rebuild our relationship to technical development, and seek perspectives that unite practical and critical activity.     Die beständige Zurückhaltung junger Frauen gegenüber technischen Berufen erscheint zunehmend erklärungsbedürftig. Mit Bezugnahme auf die Arbeiten von Judith Butler und Michel Foucault fragt Marike Schmeck aus einer poststrukturalistisch ausgerichteten Perspektive nach der Bedeutung gesellschaftlicher Geschlechternormen im Zusammenspiel mit vorherrschenden Technikbildern, die sich bei der Entscheidung adoleszenter Frauen für oder gegen einen technischen Beruf als relevant erweisen (können). Anhand der Analyse von Gruppendiskussionen zeigt sie, wie junge Frauen widersprüchliche Anforderungen, mit denen sie sich konfrontiert sehen, bearbeiten und sich mit ihnen identifizieren, aber auch widerständige Praxen entwickeln.

    It is only recently, with the increasing interest in origami and folding in natural sciences and the humanities, that the fold as a new conception in a whole range of disciplines has begun to be conceived in a broader way. Folding as a material and structural process offers a new methodology to think about the close relationship of matter, form and code. It henceforth crosses out old dichotomies, such as the organic and the inorganic or nature and technology, and blurs the boundaries between experimental, conceptual and historical approaches. This anthology aims to unfold this new interdisciplinary field and its disciplinary impact, ranging from materials science, biology, architecture, and mathematics to literature and philosophy.

This book provides an interdisciplinary synthesis of the topic of culture in the context of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and a structured overview of a large body of HCI research on (and with) culture. The book presents a short and guided overview of the concept of culture. It offers some background on the origin and development of the term culture. It also outlines some of its key traits and ingredients and summarizes three main perspectives of culture across disciplines. The book argues that culture matters considerably in HCI and discusses a number of reasons for and against its relevance. Arguments against include a lack of a universal or common definition of the term culture and globalization. Arguments in favor touch upon important aspects of HCI, including a diversely growing user base, the need to provide designers with enough support to design across cultures, and the inseparable relationship between culture and technology. The issues explored in this book can be classified into three, non-mutually exclusive, categories: theoretical, practical, and controversial. The book outlines the main conceptual perspectives of culture within HCI, including Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory, Edward T. Hall’s cross-cultural theory of communication, and Richard Nisbett’s cultural cognitive systems of thought as well as examining the ways in which culture has been operationalized in HCI research and the main functions of culture in this area. It closes with a discussion of some open issues intended to spark debate and future research. The literature this book draws upon covers a wide range of research disciplines, including Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Robotics, Disability Studies, Cultural and Cross-Cultural Psychology, Usability, and Design. This book aspires to provide a useful overview of culture for HCI scholars at all levels.     Traffic is culture. It determines what is where and on which routes, who meets and who doesn't it forms the basis of the networks between people and things. With the automation of traffic, the establishment of driver assistance systems and the development of self-driving cars, it is not only the relationships of human and non-human traffic participants that are being called into question. The ethical and legal foundations of road traffic as well as the basic conditions of interaction must also be re-negotiated. The contributors to this volume analyse the transformations of mobility, the traffic revolution and the highly charged object of the car from the perspectives of media and cultural studies. Verkehr ist Kultur. Er bestimmt darüber, was sich wo und auf welchen Wegen befindet, wer aufeinandertrifft und wer nicht - er bildet die Grundlage der Netzwerke, die Menschen und Dinge miteinander eingehen. Mit der Automatisierung des Verkehrs, der Etablierung von Fahrassistenzsystemen und der Entwicklung selbstfahrender Autos stehen nicht nur die Verhältnisse menschlicher und nicht-menschlicher Verkehrsteilnehmenden in Frage. Auch die ethischen und juristischen Grundlagen des Straßenverkehrs sowie die basalen Bedingungen des Umgangs miteinander müssen neu verhandelt werden.     Introduction -- The Concept of Culture: A Short and Guided Overview -- Culture Matters in HCI -- Conceptual Perspectives of Culture within HCI -- The Operationalization of Culture in HCI -- Some Open Issues -- Conclusion. This book provides an interdisciplinary synthesis of the topic of culture in the context of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and a structured overview of a large body of HCI research on (and with) culture. The book presents a short and guided overview of the concept of culture. It offers some background on the origin and development of the term culture. It also outlines some of its key traits and ingredients and summarizes three main perspectives of culture across disciplines. The book argues that culture matters considerably in HCI and discusses a number of reasons for and against its relevance. Arguments against include a lack of a universal or common definition of the term culture and globalization. Arguments in favor touch upon important aspects of HCI, including a diversely growing user base, the need to provide designers with enough support to design across cultures, and the inseparable relationship between culture and technology. The issues explored in this book can be classified into three, non-mutually exclusive, categories: theoretical, practical, and controversial. The book outlines the main conceptual perspectives of culture within HCI, including Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory, Edward T. Hall’s cross-cultural theory of communication, and Richard Nisbett’s cultural cognitive systems of thought as well as examining the ways in which culture has been operationalized in HCI research and the main functions of culture in this area. It closes with a discussion of some open issues intended to spark debate and future research.
