"A critical scholarly edition of the Karaite Yefet ben 'Eli ha-Levi's (10th-century) Judaeo-Arabic translation of and commentary on the prophetic books Amos, Haggai, and Malachi, including a comparison of 19 manuscripts and an extensive introduction. The introduction discusses Yefet's exegesis of the three books, his approaches to the biblical narratives, his polemic with the Rabbanites, and the exegetical principles he uses in his translation of the verses. Yefet ben 'Eli was one of the most important biblical commentators of the early Middle Ages. He translated all the books of the Bible into Judaeo-Arabic and composed a long commentary on them. His commentaries on the books of Amos, Haggai, and Malachi reflect his method of biblical exegesis and present unique interpretive ideas

"This book begins with a brief overview of traditional theodicy followed by a more detailed look at Cohen's covenantal theology. Covenant grounds Cohen's understanding of our relationships with God and other persons and is the basis for his theodicy: if we are by creation covenantal, bound to God and each other in covenant, why do we have such difficulty sustaining covenantal bonds? Cohen was rent by his own inability to maintain bond with God and other persons, often women he loved. While theodicy traditionally holds this is a human failing, Cohen proposes that it must also be God's. God is the source of humanity's covenantal breaches as he is source of humanity itself. Cohen's commitment to covenant and his anger at this God who made us so prone to failing it undergird the faith, frustration, and sardonic taunting of Cohen's work. Both his faith and ire are traced through (i) Cohen's unorthodox use of Jewish and Christian imagery, (ii) his writings about women, politics, and the Holocaust, and (iii) in his magisterial final theology, You Want It Darker, released three weeks before his death"--

Introduction -- Greek and Greco-Roman texts on teachers and teaching -- Teaching and authority in the first half of Mark -- Teaching and authority in the second half of Mark -- Conclusion. "Evan Hershman seeks to examine Mark's portrayal of Jesus as teacher in comparison with portrayals of teachers in contemporary Greco-Roman literature, and argues that the teaching motif in Mark is used in highly distinctive ways. He argues that careful study reveals Mark's use of the trope does not aim to expound a fully fleshed-out ethical agenda, but rather to emphasize Jesus's unique authority, incorporate conflicts with other claimants to authority into the Gospel narrative, and persuade the gospel audience to accept his Christological vision and its demands on their lives. Hershman develops these three related themes behind the motif of moral instruction, and offers suggestions for how this portrayal of Jesus fits with the historical and social context in which the Gospel was written. By analyzing not only teaching and authority throughout Mark, but also numerous Greek and Greco-Roman texts concerning teachers and learning, Hershman creates a new reading of significant Markan passages - such as the parables discourse and the temple incident - in light of a focus on the importance of Jesus's teachings to the plot of the Gospel."--

B.C.). The investigation is based on the work Mozi yu Yesu of the Hanlin scholar and convert Wu Leichuan (1869–1944). The first part gives a biographical sketch and discusses the writings and prolegomena of the Sino-Christian hermeneutics of Wu. Part two describes the social reformer Mozi and his teachings that are interpreted by Wu in a Christian way. Part three presents the life and teachings of Jesus according to Wu as well as his attempts to establish a “Ruist” view of the Christian tradition. Part four is dedicated to the comparison between Mozi and Jesus, with special emphasis on Wu’s understanding of religion. The fifth part refers to the defectiveness of the Chinese and Christian traditions and to the necessity of a return to the “true and original Dao.”

Introduction -- Greek and Greco-Roman texts on teachers and teaching -- Teaching and authority in the first half of Mark -- Teaching and authority in the second half of Mark -- Conclusion.
