This book addresses the relevance of geographical indication (GI) as a tool for local and socio-economic development and democratization of agri-food, with case studies from Asia, Europe and the Americas. A geographical indication is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. It provides not only a way for businesses to leverage the value of their geographically unique products, but also to inform and attract consumers. A highly contested topic, GI is praised as a tool for the revitalization of agricultural communities, while also criticized for being an instrument exploited by global corporate forces to promote their interests. There are concerns that the promotion of GI may hamper the establishment of democratic forms of development. The contributing authors address this topic by offering theoretically informed investigations of GI from around the world. The book includes case studies ranging from green tea in Japan, olive oil in Turkey and dried fish in Norway, to French wine and Mexican Mezcal. It also places GI in the broader context of the evolution and trends of agri-food under neoliberal globalization. The book will be of interest to researchers, policy makers and students in agri-food studies, sociology of food and agriculture, geography, agricultural and rural economics, environmental and intellectual property law, and social development.

This urgent publication surveys the latest research and methodologies combining efficiency in agricultural food production with sustainability in the same systems. Growing pressures on food production seem contrapuntal to the ever-stronger imperatives of sustainability. How can agriculture balance successes in both productivity and ecology? Sustainability is a dynamic concept, seeking to achieve a balance-in space and time-of environmental, economic and social factors. Thus, farming systems are faced with contradictory demands for success: economic performance and social equity have to be maximized, while the environment and its natural resources need to be protected. Showing how the method of sustainability assessment plays a key role in choosing the best agricultural productive mode, this book guides the reader through the process of selecting, from among the various approaches for building farming systems, the method of decision-making that will result in the most appropriate outcome, given the context. Case studies hail from polities as diverse as Portugal and Canada, Argentina and Lebanon. The work thus offers a valuable critical survey of the assessment methods that account for sustainability and economics, and which have developed considerably in the last two decades. The heterogeneous approaches covered here make this volume appropriate for consultation in a wide variety of social, political and geographical contexts

Study on water productivity issues of rice cultivation in Punjab and sugarcane cultivation in Maharashtra Indian agriculture is estimated to be consuming about 78 percent of total fresh water resources available in the country. Yet, more than half of the gross cropped area is still dependent on rains. Extremely skewed allocation of scarce irrigation water amongst crops and inefficient use of the allocated water are major reasons behind this paradox. Water guzzler crops like rice and sugarcane, occupying about one-fourth of the gross cropped area, consume more than 60 per cent of irrigation water available in the country. Hence if sustainable agriculture water-use has to be ensured, economics (productivity and profitability) of at least these two crops needs to be studied thoroughly to see how best higher productivity and profitability can be achieved with lesser amounts of irrigation water. This is what is attempted in this paper. The study shows that regions like Punjab and Haryana, which have high land productivity of rice, fall way below in ranking of irrigation water productivity. Instead, eastern states like Bihar, eastern UP give better results, highlighting the need to shift rice cultivation from north-western states to eastern states. Similar results are obtained for sugarcane in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, which are high on land productivity but low on irrigation water productivity, suggesting that sugarcane cultivation needs to shift from tropical to sub-tropical states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. In order to encourage such cropping pattern shifts, both in rice and sugarcane, one will have to undertake reforms related to water/energy policies, institutions and technologies related to irrigation water use. Some of our policy suggestions are: 1) Implement price policies that reflect the scarcity and economic value of water and power use in agriculture, while improving the quality and timely availability of these to farmers 2) Strengthen marketing opportunity of sugarcane and procurement policies of rice in the water abundant states of eastern region. At the same time, set the markets right (reduce market risk) for the less water intensive crops that give much higher value per cubic meter of irrigation water applied in water scarce states 3) Direct Benefit transfer of water and power subsidies to farmers 4) If price reforms with DBT of water and power subsidies are not possible, ration irrigation water and power used in agriculture on per hectare basis, and then let the water markets operate amongst farmers 5) Adopt irrigation technologies and practices that encourage water savings, such as micro irrigation system in sugarcane and rice.

As the world faces food supply challenges posed by the declining growth rate of agricultural productivity, accelerated deterioration of quantity and quality of natural resources that underpin agricultural production, climate change, and hunger, poverty and malnutrition, a multi-faced understanding is key to identifying practical solutions. This book gives stakeholders a common vision, concept and methods that are based on proven and widely agreed strategies for continuous improvement in sustainability at different scales. While information on policies and technologies that would enhance productivity and sustainability of individual agricultural sectors is available to some extent, literature is practically devoid of information and experiences for countries and communities considering a comprehensive approach (cross-sectoral policies, strategies and technologies) to SFA. This book is the first effort to fill this gap, providing information on proven options for enhancing productivity, profitability, equity and environmental sustainability of individual sectors and, in addition, how to identify opportunities and actions for exploiting cross-sectoral synergies

Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events, notably of droughts and floods to which the agriculture sector is particularly exposed. While agricultural productivity growth and policy development have allowed to better cope with these risks and reduce overall impacts on the sector and commodity markets, there is substantial room to improve policy responses and co-ordinate across policy domains, including with respect to water rights and allocation, weather and hydrological information, innovation and education, and insurance and compensation schemes. Indeed, drought and flood risks are likely to become a major policy concern as increasing population will increase the demand for food, feed, fibre, and energy, not to mention the competition for water resources, and urbanisation will increase the demand for flood protection and mitigation, raising the issue of the allocation of flood risks across sectors and areas Characterising and measuring droughts and floods -- The economics of droughts and floods in agriculture -- Policy approaches for the sustainable management of droughts and floods in agriculture
