This volume offers innovative ways to think about speculation at a time when anticipation of catastrophe in an apocalyptic mode is the order of the day and shapes public discourse on a global scale. It maps an interdisciplinary field of investigation: the chapters interrogate hegemonic ways of shaping the present through investments in the future, while also looking at speculative practices that reveal transformative potential. The twelve contributions explore concrete instances of envisioning the open unknown and affirmative speculative potentials in history, literature, comics, computer games, mold research, ecosystem science and artistic practice.

In Migrant Futures Aimee Bahng traces the cultural production of futurity by juxtaposing the practices of speculative finance against those of speculative fiction. While financial speculation creates a future based on predicting and mitigating risk for wealthy elites, the wide range of speculative novels, comics, films, and narratives Bahng examines imagines alternative futures that envision the multiple possibilities that exist beyond capital's reach. Whether presenting new spatial futures of the US-Mexico borderlands or inventing forms of kinship in Singapore in order to survive in an economy designed for the few, the varied texts Bahng analyzes illuminate how the futurity of speculative finance is experienced by those who find themselves mired in it. At the same time these displaced, undocumented, unbanked, and disavowed characters imagine alternative visions of the future that offer ways to bring forth new political economies, social structures, and subjectivities that exceed the framework of capitalism

Trading in oil futures and options is an introduction to price risk management in the worldwide oil industry. With numerous practical examples, it requires no prior knowledge and should be read by everyone involved in the industry. Although aimed primarily at those new to risk management it will also provide a useful theoretical background to more experienced managers and it will show those in other markets how the oil industry uses futures and other derivatives. This book concentrates on all the risk management tools available to everyone from crude oil producer to refined product consumer and explains the theory of futures, exchange options and over the counter trading

"In Speculation as a Mode of Production: Aesthetics and the Financialisation of the Subject, Marina Vishmidt offers a new perspective on one of the main categories of capitalist life in the present. Writing not under the shadow but in the spirit of Adorno's negative dialectic, her work pursues speculation through its contested terrains of philosophy, finance and art, to arrive at the most detailed analysis that we now possess of the role of speculation in the shaping of subjectivity by value relations. Featuring detailed critical discussions of recent tendencies in the artistic representation of labour, and a brilliant reconstruction of the philosophical concept of the speculative from its origins in German Romanticism, Speculation as a Mode of Production is an essential, widescreen theorization of capital's drive to self-expansion, and an urgent corrective to the narrow and one-sided periodisations to which it is most commonly subjected"--

Introduction : dealing in futures -- Are you paranoid enough? Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days and the politics of risk and speculation -- Live on the edge I say : edgework, risk, and literary form in Karen Tei Yamashita's Tropic of Orange -- Monstrous politics : epistemological empowerment, natural science, and new territories of empire in Larissa Lai's Salt Fish Girl -- Towards a poetics of risk and speculation The anticipatory logic of speculation and preemptive politics of risk are increasingly gaining significance in a globalizing neoliberal world. This study traces risk and speculation as aesthetic and political-economic strategies in factual and fictional discourses emerging at the North American Pacific Rim within a decade around 2000. Its exemplary close readings in particular focus on three fictional texts (Kathryn Bigelow's Hollywood film <U+00bb>Strange Days±, 1995, Karen T. Yamashita's novel <U+00bb>Tropic of Orange±, 1997, and Larissa Lai's novel <U+00bb>Salt Fish Girl±, 2002) whose intricate aesthetics pass

In the first essay, I develop an autoregressive method for testing the APT. Unlike methods currently being used in the literature, this method does not require prior estimation of factor loadings and risk premia. The new methodology is based on the observation that past returns of an asset carry information about its exposure to systematic risks and thus can be used to construct ex post risk adjustments for the asset via a cross-sectional autoregressive model. I derive several testable implications of the APT and drop a crucial assumption that factor risk premia are constant. The approach is robust to changes in factor loadings in some cases. I find little evidence that firm size contribute additional explanatory power to that of factor loadings in the APT model The second essay studies the rational expectations present value model with variable expected returns. I develop an econometric method with which (i) to test a general model of expected returns and (ii) to test a linearalized version of the present value model. I find that share dividend-price ratios carry information about the structure of future dividend growth. I also find that the rejection of the present value model is dependent upon the variability of expected returns The third essay is an outcome of joint work with Whitney Newey. We show that the Newey-West adjustment matrix can be very useful for correcting heteroskedasticity and cross-sectional correlation in panel studies. We apply that adjustment procedure to the vector autoregression model of Holtz-Eakin, Newey and Rosen and develop a chi-square test to determine the number of pervasive economic factors in an approximate factor model. Our empirical results suggest there are at least seven factors in the economy that affect returns of securities listed on the New York Stock Exchange from 1987-1988

Biographical note: Susanne Wegener (Dr. phil.) works on a postdoc project on genre and theory construction in literary criticism. Her research interests are American Studies, Narrative Theory, Critical Theory, Political Philosophy, Theory of Science, and History of Ideas. The anticipatory logic of speculation and preemptive politics of risk are increasingly gaining significance in a globalizing neoliberal world. This study traces risk and speculation as aesthetic and political-economic strategies in factual and fictional discourses emerging at the North American Pacific Rim within a decade around 2000. Its exemplary close readings in particular focus on three fictional texts (Kathryn Bigelow's Hollywood film »Strange Days«, 1995, Karen T. Yamashita's novel »Tropic of Orange«, 1997, and Larissa Lai's novel »Salt Fish Girl«, 2002) whose intricate aesthetics pass perceptive critique on concurrent political-economic discourses and their subtle reconfiguration of race, class, and gender. The speculative near-future scenarios projected by these artifacts expose the rise of risk as a new rationality of governance. At the same time they illustrate neoliberal speculation as a new paradigm of subject formation at a hyper-capitalist, millennial Pacific Rim.
