    This book draws on the lived experience of sound’s capacity to move and shake us in direct, subtle and profound ways through speech, location sound, and music in documentary film.

     

    The associative, connotative and sheer emotive power of sound has the capacity to move and shake us in a myriad of direct, subtle and often profound ways. The implications of this for its role as speech, location sound, and music in documentary film are far-reaching. The writers in this book draw on the lived experience of sound’s resounding capacity as primary motivation for exploring these implications, united by the overarching theme of how listening is connected with acts of making sense both on its own terms and in conjunction with viewing.

     

    The resulting thirteen essays of Soundings: Documentary Film and the Listening Experience cover films made from WWII to the present day in locations across Europe and the Americas, and in styles ranging from political propaganda, industrial promotion and educative exposition, to more aesthetically-driven films taking their bearings from avant-garde art. The authors draw on their experience in scholarly research, practice-as-research, and in the aesthetic and technical practice of documentary filmmaking. Dazu versetzt sie sich in die Rolle von Radiohörer*innen und rekonstruiert mittels eines innovativen methodischen Zugangs damaliges auditives Erleben. Neben Tonarchivalien des Schweizer Senders aus den Jahren 1950 bis 1975, in denen die Alpen genauso journalistisch wie radiophon dargestellt wurden, wird die technische Übermittlung nachgestellt und damit auch die Geräuschwelt des Äthers als Teil des auditiven Erlebenshorizonts untersucht.     Between late antiquity and the fifteenth century, theologians, philosophers, and poets struggled to articulate the correct relationship between sound and sense, creating taxonomies of sounds based on their capacity to carry meaning. In World of Echo, Adin E. Lears traces how medieval thinkers adopted the concept of noise as a mode of lay understanding grounded in the body and the senses.With a broadly interdisciplinary approach, Lears examines a range of literary genres to highlight the poetic and social effects of this vibrant discourse, offering close readings of works by Chaucer and Langland, as well as the mystics Richard Rolle and Margery Kempe. Each of these writers embraced an embodied experience of language resistant to clear articulation, even as their work reflects inherited anxieties about the appeal of such sensations. A preoccupation with the sound of language emerged in the form of poetic soundplay at the same time that mysticism and other forms of lay piety began to flower in England. As Lears shows, the presence of such emphatic aural texture amplified the cognitive importance of feeling in conjunction with reason and was a means for the laity—including lay women—to cultivate embodied forms of knowledge on their own terms, in precarious relation to existing clerical models of instruction. World of Echo offers a deep history of the cultural and social hierarchies that coalesce around the aesthetic experiences that accentuate ways of knowing outside proscribed models

    Der Begriff der Resonanz - ursprünglich eine akustische Metapher - wird derzeit vielfach verwendet, um sprachliche und leibliche, aber auch psychologische und physikalische Prozesse zu beschreiben. Es geht um die Bedingungen dafür, dass etwas oder jemand in Schwingung versetzt wird, und darum, welche Rückkopplungen durch solches Mitschwingen in Interaktionssystemen erzeugt werden - letztlich: wie zwei Systeme einen gemeinsamen Rhythmus finden und sich synchronisieren.Die Beiträge des Bandes fragen: Wie können Synchronisierungen und Desynchronisierungen sowie ihre Rhythmen wissenschaftlich erfasst werden? Resonanz erweist sich dabei als Konzept mit großer integrativer Kraft - sowohl zwischen den Forschungsrichtungen als auch zwischen Theorie und alltäglicher, therapeutischer und künstlerischer Praxis. This book traces the integrative power of the disputed concept of resonance - as an intermediary between different directions of research as well as between theory and daily, therapeutic, and artistic practices.

    Explores how poets associated with the New Left mobilized tape recording as a new form of sonic field research even as they themselves were being subject to tape-based surveillance. Media theorists tend to understand audio recording as a technique for separating bodies from sounds, but this book listens closely to tape's embedded information, offering a counterintuitive site-specific account of 1960s poetic recordings. Allen Ginsberg, Charles Olson, Larry Eigner, and Amiri Baraka all used recording to contest models of time being put forward by dominant media and the state, exploring non-monumental time and subverting media schedules of work, consumption, leisure, and national crises. Surprisingly, their methods at once dovetailed with those of the state collecting evidence against them and ran up against the same technological limits. Arguing that CIA and FBI "researchers" shared unexpected terrain not only with poets but with famous theorists such as Fredric Jameson and Hayden White, Lytle Shaw reframes the status of tape recordings in postwar poetics and challenges notions of how tape might be understood as a mode of evidence
