    Eindrucksvolle Naturlandschaften und exotische Kulturen lockten Künstler aus dem Rhein-Main-Gebiet in zahlreiche europäische Länder, in den Orient und sogar bis nach Amerika. Ausstellung und begleitender Katalog thematisieren die Faszination dieser Künstler für fremde Bildwelten vom späten 18. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert. Ihre künstlerischen Interessen an den fremden Orten waren sehr vielfältig: Sie suchten nach exotischen Bildmotiven, dokumentierten wissenschaftliche Expeditionen oder experimentierten mit fremden Lichtverhältnissen. Die gesammelten Reiseeindrücke hielten die Künstler in Bleistiftskizzen, Aquarellen, Ölstudien und Fotografien fest. Diese dienten nach der Rückkehr zumeist als Bildvorlagen für aufwändigere Ölgemälde. Angesichts einer steigenden Nachfrage spezialisierten sich einige Künstler auf bestimmte Bildsujets und trugen so teilweise zur Verbreitung stereotyper Vorstellungen von der Fremde bei.
