In the wake of the 1960s, that decade's focus on consciousness-raising transformed into an array of intellectual projects far afield of movement politics. The mind's powers came to preoccupy a range of thinkers and writers: ethicists pursuing contractual theories of justice, radical ecologists interested in the paleolithic brain, seventies cultists, and the devout of both evangelical and New Age persuasions. In Ideal Minds, Michael Trask presents a boldly revisionist argument about the revival of subjectivity in postmodern American culture, connecting familiar figures within the seventies intellectual landscape who share a commitment to what he calls "neo-idealism" as a weapon in the struggle against discredited materialist and behaviorist worldviews. In a heterodox intellectual and literary history of the 1970s, Ideal Minds mixes ideas from cognitive science, philosophy of mind, moral philosophy, deep ecology, political theory, science fiction, neoclassical economics, and the sociology of religion. Trask also delves into the decade's more esoteric branches of learning, including Scientology, anarchist theory, rapture prophesies, psychic channeling, and neo-Malthusianism. Through this investigation, Trask argues that a dramatic inflation in the value of consciousness and autonomy beginning in the 1970s accompanied a growing argument about the state's inability to safeguard such values. Ultimately, the thinkers Trask analyzes-John Rawls, Arne Neiss, L. Ron Hubbard, Hal Lindsey, Philip Dick, Ursula Le Guin, Edward Abbey, William Burroughs, John Irving, and James Merrill-found alternatives to statism in conditions that would lend intellectual support to the consolidation of these concepts in the radical free market ideologies of the 1980s

A powerful, moving photography collection of Americans from all walks of life paired with their handwritten statements about their American dreams. In the lead-up to the 2008 presidential election, Canadian photographer Ian Brown, fascinated by the idea of the "American dream," set out to photograph Americans and document what it meant to them. Brown traveled across the country in an old truck and began knocking on people's doors; meeting them at town halls, diners, and factories; and approaching them on main streets in small towns. In addition to shooting people's portraits, he asked them to write down--on a piece of paper, in their own handwriting--whatever their "American dream" was or what it meant to them. Their dreams offer a look at fascinating cross-section of identity that makes up the American experience--from the woman in an impoverished town who just wants running water and the pastor who wants to see her community become free of violence, to the young couple who bought a home with the hopes of starting a family and the young woman who dreams of becoming a journalist. Twelve years, eighty thousand miles, fifty states, and more than three hundred portraits later, American Dreams is a culmination of this incredible project, featuring 175 portraits of people of all backgrounds paired with their handwritten "American dreams." Beautifully packaged, and inclusive of a multitude of ages, races, identities, classes, religions, and ideologies, American Dreams is a poignant, defining look at American life and identity during one of the most important moments in our history.

"Women, Men, and Elections sheds new light on gendered political behaviour by analysing the relationship between policy supply and gender gaps in vote choice across elections in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and multiple Western European countries. Rosalind Shorrocks argues that the electoral context, and specifically policy supply, is associated with the ways in which vote choice at election time is gendered. Using data from the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems and the Comparative Manifesto Project, Shorrocks finds that the extent to which men and women differ in their vote choice is contingent on the policy choices parties offer to voters. Women and men respond to party policy positions in ways that are linked to both their gender and their socioeconomic position, producing variation in gendered political behaviour across elections, across countries, and across subgroups in society. Women, Men, and Elections offers a much needed fresh perspective on our understanding of political behaviour, representation, and party competition. It serves as an excellent supplementary text for students and scholars of comparative politics, gender and politics, and political behaviour

Klappentext: "Over two hundred years after his death, George Washington is still often considered the metaphorical father of the United States. Washington was first known as the "Father of His Country" during his lifetime, when the American people bestowed the title upon him as a symbolic act of resistance and rebirth. Since then, presidents have stood as paternal figureheads for America, often serving as moral beacons. This book tracks political fatherhood throughout world history, from the idea of the pater patriae in Roman antiquity to Martin Luther's Bible translations and beyond. Often using George Washington as a paradigm, this book explores presidential iconography in the U.S., propaganda and the role of paternal rhetoric in shaping American sociopolitical history-including the results of the 2016 presidential election."--

"The American Dream" is one of the most familiar and resonant phrases in our national lexicon, so familiar that we seldom pause to ask its origin, its history, or what it actually means. Radical Ecology's Mindfulness -- 3. That Seventies Cult -- 4. Millennial America and the World to Come -- Afterword: The Marketization of Everything -- Notes -- Index In the wake of the 1960s, that decade's focus on consciousness-raising transformed into an array of intellectual projects far afield of movement politics.

Cultural Evolution argues that people's values and behavior are shaped by the degree to which survival is secure; it was precarious for most of history, which encouraged heavy emphasis on group solidarity, rejection of outsiders, and obedience to strong leaders. For under extreme scarcity, xenophobia is realistic: if there is just enough land to support one tribe and another tribe tries to claim it, survival may literally be a choice between Us and Them. Conversely, high levels of existential security encourage openness to change, diversity, and new ideas. The unprecedented prosperity and security of the postwar era brought cultural change, the environmentalist movement, and the spread of democracy. But in recent decades, diminishing job security and rising inequality have led to an authoritarian reaction. Evidence from more than 100 countries demonstrates that people's motivations and behavior reflect the extent to which they take survival for granted - and that modernization changes them in roughly predictable ways. This book explains the rise of environmentalist parties, gender equality, and same-sex marriage through a new, empirically-tested version of modernization theory Introduction : overview of this book -- Evolutionary modernization and cultural change -- The rise of postmaterialist values in the West and the world -- Global cultural patterns -- The end of secularization? -- Cultural change, slow and fast : the distinctive trajectory of norms governing gender equality and sexual orientation -- The feminization of society and declining willingness to fight for one's country : the individual-level component of the long peace -- Development and democracy -- The changing roots of happiness -- The silent revolution in reverse : the rise of Trump and the authoritarian populist parties -- The coming of artificial intelligence society
