    "William Shakespeare's Hamlet is probably the best-known and most commented upon work of literature in Western culture. The paradox is that it is at once utterly familiar and strangely elusive--very like our own selves, argues Gabriel Josipovici in this stimulating and original study. Moreover, our desire to master this elusiveness, to "pluck the heart out of its mystery," as Hamlet himself says, precisely mirrors what is going on in the play; and what Shakespeare's play demonstrates is that to conceive human character (and works of art) in this way is profoundly misguided. Rather than rushing to conclusions or setting out a theory of what Hamlet is "about," therefore, we should read and watch patiently and openly, allowing the play to unfold before us in its own time and trying to see each moment in the context of the whole. Josipovici's valuable book is thus an exercise in analysis which puts the physical experience of watching and reading at the heart of the critical process--at once a practical introduction to a great and much-loved play and a sophisticated intervention in some of the key questions of theory and aesthetics of our time"--

    Die als „Schlegel/Tieck" bekannt gewordene Übersetzung sämtlicher Dramen William Shakespeares – sie wurde 1797 von August Wilhelm Schlegel begonnen und in den 1820er Jahren von Ludwig Tieck, seiner Tochter Dorothea und Wolf Heinrich von Baudissin fortgeführt – ist zu einem klassischen Text der deutschen Literatur geworden. Die Beiträge nehmen eine Neubewertung dieser Übertragungen vor, indem sie nach ihren Kontexten fragen: nach den Bedingungen, der Theorie und der Praxis des Übersetzens, nach der Bedeutung innerhalb des frühromantischen Programms sowie nach dem Konzept einer „romantisch-poetischen" Übersetzung. Außerdem werden die Unterschiede in den Verfahren August Wilhelm Schlegels bzw. des Tieck-Kreises, schließlich die intensive Rezeption bis in die Gegenwart vorgestellt und diskutiert; auch soll es um die Frage gehen, wie der „Schlegel/Tieck" heute am sinnvollsten historisch-kritisch ediert werden kann, welche Anforderungen dabei zu beachten sind und welche digitalen Verfahren bei einer solchen dringend notwendigen Edition zum Einsatz kommen müssen. Der Vorliegende Band versammelt jene Beiträge, die während einer Tagung an der SLUB in Dresden vom 13. bis 16. Juni 2022 vorgetragen wurden The translations of the complete dramas of William Shakespeare now known as the "Schlegel/Tieck" translations were begun by August Wilhelm Schlegel in 1797 and continued by Ludwig Tieck, his daughter Dorothea, and Wolf Heinrich von Bauddissin in the 1820s. They have now become a classic text of German literature. These proceedings encompass the latest research, which contextually re-evaluates those translations

    Heather James examines the ways in which Shakespeare handles the inheritance and transmission of the Troy legend. She argues that Shakespeare's use of Virgil, Ovid and other classical sources demonstrates the appropriation of classical authority in the interests of developing a national myth, and goes on to distinguish Shakespeare's deployment of the myth from 'official' Tudor and Stuart ideology. James traces Shakespeare's reworking of the myth in Troilus and Cressida, Antony and Cleopatra, Cymbeline and The Tempest, and shows how the legend of Troy in Queen Elizabeth's day differed from that in the time of King James. The larger issue the book confronts is the directly political one of the way in which Shakespeare's textual appropriations participate in the larger cultural project of finding historical legitimation for a realm that was asserting its status as an empire Introduction: Shakespeare's fatal Cleopatra -- Shakespeare and the Troy Legend -- Blazoning injustices: mutilating Titus Andronicus, Vergil, and Rome -- "Tricks we play on the dead": making history in Troilus and Cressida -- To earn a place in the story: resisting the Aeneid in Antony and Cleopatra -- Cymbeline's mingle-mangle: Britain's Roman histories -- "How came that window in?": allusion, politics, and the theater in The Tempest.

    La présente étude tente de montrer que Shakespeare a été influencé par la culture grecque dans Hamlet, Macbeth et King Lear. Au travers de correspondances textuelles et thématiques troublantes, l'auteur cherche à établir qu'il paraît manifeste que Shakespeare ait eu recours à la tragédie grecque dans la composition de ces trois pièces majeures. Néanmoins, comme l'atteste la présente recherche, il ne peut être établi avec certitude que ce dramaturge ait lu Eschyle, Sophocle ou Euripide en grec ou en traduction vernaculaire que ce soit en anglais, en français ou en italien, traductions qui étaient pourtant nombreuses du vivant de Shakespeare. Cette thèse se divise en trois parties principales lesquelles explorent les principaux champs pour lesquels une ressemblance est flagrante avec Shakespeare ce qui amène à penser qu'il aurait pu avoir recours à la tragédie grecque. La première partie explore les moyens par lesquels le dramaturge aurait pu avoir eu connaissance de ces textes (scolarisation, traductions). Dans cette optique, cette partie expose les apports de la Renaissance, notamment dans l'instruction et la transmission des lettres grecques. La deuxième partie rapporte, pour chaque pièce, les correspondances textuelles et thématiques remarquables avec des œuvres littéraires majeures de la Grèce antique, surtout les dramaturges et Homère. La troisième partie se consacre à l'étude de ces héroïnes exceptionnelles que l'on trouve dans ces trois tragédies. Sans établir de portrait psychologique, cette étude cherche à dégager trois fils directeurs qui relient l'héroïne shakespearienne à l'héroïne tragique grecque : la stature de ces femmes, la représentation de la noblesse et l'absence de discours amoureux, thématiques centrales de la tragédie grecque The main objective of this dissertation is to consider the possibility of a Greek influence, namely mythology and tragedy, on Shakespeare's masterpieces Hamlet, Macbethand KingLear.This study first draws an impartial account of the current knowledge concerning Shakespeare's supposed education and of the major role played by Byzantine scholarship in the rediscovery of Greek texts which led to a huge wave of translations into Latin first and then into the vernaculars. The second part tries to establish textual and thematic correlations between Shakespeare's works and some Attic plays together with the epics of Homer and several other ancient Greek authors by picking passages drawn from both sides and explaining the common point between them. Finally, the third part deals with the place Shakespeare gave his main heroines in these plays, a place which corresponds in some significant aspects to the Greek tragic heroine

    La présente étude tente de montrer que Shakespeare a été influencé par la culture grecque dans Hamlet, Macbeth et King Lear. Au travers de correspondances textuelles et thématiques troublantes, l'auteur cherche à établir qu'il paraît manifeste que Shakespeare ait eu recours à la tragédie grecque dans la composition de ces trois pièces majeures. Néanmoins, comme l'atteste la présente recherche, il ne peut être établi avec certitude que ce dramaturge ait lu Eschyle, Sophocle ou Euripide en grec ou en traduction vernaculaire que ce soit en anglais, en français ou en italien, traductions qui étaient pourtant nombreuses du vivant de Shakespeare. Cette thèse se divise en trois parties principales lesquelles explorent les principaux champs pour lesquels une ressemblance est flagrante avec Shakespeare ce qui amène à penser qu'il aurait pu avoir recours à la tragédie grecque. La première partie explore les moyens par lesquels le dramaturge aurait pu avoir eu connaissance de ces textes (scolarisation, traductions). Dans cette optique, cette partie expose les apports de la Renaissance, notamment dans l'instruction et la transmission des lettres grecques. La deuxième partie rapporte, pour chaque pièce, les correspondances textuelles et thématiques remarquables avec des œuvres littéraires majeures de la Grèce antique, surtout les dramaturges et Homère. La troisième partie se consacre à l'étude de ces héroïnes exceptionnelles que l'on trouve dans ces trois tragédies. Sans établir de portrait psychologique, cette étude cherche à dégager trois fils directeurs qui relient l'héroïne shakespearienne à l'héroïne tragique grecque : la stature de ces femmes, la représentation de la noblesse et l'absence de discours amoureux, thématiques centrales de la tragédie grecque The main objective of this dissertation is to consider the possibility of a Greek influence, namely mythology and tragedy, on Shakespeare's masterpieces Hamlet, Macbethand KingLear.This study first draws an impartial account of the current knowledge concerning Shakespeare's supposed education and of the major role played by Byzantine scholarship in the rediscovery of Greek texts which led to a huge wave of translations into Latin first and then into the vernaculars. The second part tries to establish textual and thematic correlations between Shakespeare's works and some Attic plays together with the epics of Homer and several other ancient Greek authors by picking passages drawn from both sides and explaining the common point between them. Finally, the third part deals with the place Shakespeare gave his main heroines in these plays, a place which corresponds in some significant aspects to the Greek tragic heroine
