This volume is a companion to the author's new Loeb edition of Seneca's tragedies (vol. 1, 2002; volume 2, 2004). It offers reasons for his editorial choices, and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. Hercules Oetanus and Octavia , now generally regarded as imitations of Senecan drama, are both included. The volume is intended to be read alongside Otto Zwierlein's Kritische Kommentar , published in 1986. In the intervening years there has been much new work pertaining to Seneca's text, including full-scale editions with commentary on individual plays, such as Keulen's Troades , Töchterle's Oedipus and Ferri's Octavia . Annaeana Tragica seeks to supplement and advance Zwierlein's work in the light of this new material. An appendix reviews the scholarly controversy concerning the anapaestic odes of these plays, and offers fresh evidence relevant to the issue

Pinkster , H.S. Versnel , D.M. Schenkeveld , P.H. Schrijvers and S.R. Slings. The most important medium of Seneca's Lebenskunst is language. We first change the meaning of words through philosophical reflection; then we can change ourselves through language. Each chapter in this book takes linguistic or stylistic observations in texts as starting point (e.g. metaphors from the domains of health, finance, and sea-faring). Topics are man's self-definition in time and place and his relation to property, learning, and tradition. Single words and rhetorical patterns guide us in constructing an inner world and to find our own identity. Texts in Latin and in translation document Seneca's importance for modern, Christian Europe

In four separate studies, Andreas Heil shows that Seneca, in his tragedies Thyestes , Hercules furens , Troas ( Troades ) and Medea , handles dramatic time less experimentally than has been assumed before. In all of these plays, taking into consideration the accompanying action on the stage and the characters' respective points of view, a gradually developing plot can be reconstructed. Thus, the survey considerably deepens our understanding of Seneca's dramatic technique.

A.J. Keulen’s new commentary on Seneca’s Troades is the fruit of a lifetime devotion to this play. This extensive philological commentary on the Troades is a most welcome contribution to the study of Seneca’s plays. Meaning, history and usage of Seneca’s vocabulary are thoroughly discussed. The author provides ample comparison with Senecan prose and rival poets. In addition, the commentary addresses composition and word order, and discusses textual, metrical and grammatical difficulties. A full bibliography and three indices complete this valuable book

In the absence of the stage directions employed by their modern equivalents, ancient playwrights were obliged to ''encode'' information into their texts that can be described as implicit stage directions. It is the presence of such information that permits modern ''production criticism,'' intended to determine how ancient plays were meant to be staged. Since the early nineteenth century, it has been debated whether Seneca's tragedies were or were not written for stage production. Seneca's dramatic texts contain material that looks precisely like the implicit stage directions found in all other ancient drama, and when his plays are subjected to production criticism, it emerges that they make sound dramaturgic sense. Also, Seneca avails himself of the same artificial and sometimes irrational dramatic conventions used by other ancient playwrights, a fact often ignored by those who argue that Seneca was only writing plays for reading or recitation. The internal evidence of the plays offers much to support, and little to contradict, the idea that his plays were written with the stage in mind

How seriously are we to take Seneca's philosophizing in the Epistulae morales? Much of their content seems inconsistent and designed for mere effect. This study reveals how Seneca's choice of words and intellectual acuity are subordinated to the pedagogical aim of gradual persuasion. It becomes apparent that Seneca's formulation is tactical and that his statements must be interpreted in terms of their specific psychological intent

Main description: Study of the reception accorded to Stoic philosophy in major 17th century German tragedies reveals the conceptual foundations of the incipient modern age from the vantage of tradition. In this approach, Stoic philosophy is freed of the reduction to the phenomenon of constantia typical of previous research on the Baroque and is taken seriously as a philosophy of culture of the kind represented throughout the works of Seneca. The analysis from the viewpoint of the history of ideas foreground the Stoic premise of secundum naturam vivere and shows how the early modern age represented a dead end for Stoic philosophy in a 'modern', practical form

Main description: This study contests the widespread view that Seneca's tragedies and Lucan's epic on the civil war express their authors' disappointment at the failure of Stoic doctrine to provide convincing answers to the problems of evil in human behaviour or the inescapable blows of Fate. The works of both writers, parallel in treatment, aim at the representation in literature of the tensions between human free-will and determinism

Selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Book "English Seneca read by candlelight," wrote the Elizabethan author Thomas Nashe, "will afford you whole Hamlets." In the early decades of the twentieth century, literary and theater historians took Nashe at his word, finding Senecan tragedy at the source of Renaissance drama. More recently, critics have been inclined to dismiss traces of classical antiquity as a superficial veneer on a drama derived from medieval traditions. Lorraine Helms revisits this terrain to explore the rich and various ways in which classical learning shaped the theatrical culture of the Renaissance. She uncovers the practical advice on acting and stagecraft to be found in the writings of ancient rhetoricians; reconstructs the extraordinary circumstances under which an English woman first rendered Euripides into her native language; and ponders the precedents in antiquity for Elizabethan portrayals of prostitution and female martyrdom

The collection of the elder Seneca assembles "ations from scores of declaimers over a period spanning sixty years, from the Augustan Age through the early decades of the empire. A view is offered onto a literary scene, for this critical period of Roman letters, that is numerously populated, highly interactive, and less dominated by just a few canonical authors. Despite this potential, modern readings have often lumped declaimers together en masse and organizational principles basic to Seneca’s collection remain overlooked. This volume attempts to ‘hear’ the individual speech of declaimers by focusing on two speakers—Arellius Fuscus, rhetor to Ovid, and Papirius Fabianus, teacher of the younger Seneca. A key organizing principle, informing both the collection and the practice of declamation, was the ‘shared locus’—a short passage, defined by verbal and argumentative ingredients, that gained currency among declaimers. Study of the operation of the shared locus carries several advantages: (1) we appreciate distinctions between declaimers; (2) we recognize shared passages as a medium of communication; and (3) the shared locus emerges as a community resource, explaining deep-seated connections between declamation and literary works
