    This volume shows how highly conscious Dickens was of words – of their meaning of course, and of the ideas they conjured up, but also of their very substance, texture, plasticity, visuality, and resonance, as well as their interactions with other words, and with their cultural environment. Each keyword is treated not as a semantic unit with a fixed meaning but rather as a flexible linguistic construct. Some keywords are just a word, a characteristic or even idiosyncratic lexical unit; some are treated as a load-bearing conceptual category or theme; some disintegrate into noise, complicating readers’ assumptions about what a keyword must be. The focus shifts from "word" at micro- to macro-levels of signification, at times denoting wider cultural usage. Dynamic relations, oppositions, correlations and overlappings result from these individualized reading journeys, creating unforeseen and rich systems of meaning.

    Im kommunikativen Alltag begegnen uns vielfach Grenzen und Grenzziehungen, seien sie territorialer, individueller, sozialer oder kultureller Art. Grenzen ermöglichen Handlungsspielräume, sind aber ebenso Aushandlungsprozessen unterworfen. Bislang hat sich vor allem die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung dem Phänomen der Grenzziehung gewidmet. Dieser Band nimmt sich des Themas erstmals aus einer linguistischen Perspektive an. Die Beitragenden beleuchten verschiedene Praktiken der sprachlichen Grenzziehung sowie -überschreitung. Dabei geraten unterschiedliche Erscheinungsformen und Funktionen in den Blick, z.B. im Gespräch, in der digitalen Auseinandersetzung oder im wissenschaftlichen Schreiben. Der Schwerpunkt des Bandes liegt auf pragma-, gesprächs-, medien- sowie diskurslinguistischen Auseinandersetzungen, die zum Entwurf einer linguistischen Grenzziehungspragmatik beitragen.

    Die vorliegende Publikation ist einem Korpus von zwölf Testamenten katholischer, lutherischer und calvinischer Landesherren dreier Territorien des Heiligen Römischen Reiches aus dem Zeitraum des Konfessionellen Zeitalters gewidmet. Untersucht wird, welchen Einfluss die Konfession des Fürsten auf den Sprachgebrauch beim Abfassen seines Testamentes hatte. Dazu werden drei verschiedene sprachliche Ebenen (Textstruktur, Autoritätenreferenz, Graphie) in den Blick genommen. Bei der Einordnung der sprachlichen Befunde wird im Sinne der Historischen Pragmatik auch der jeweilige soziokulturelle Hintergrund berücksichtigt. Im Anhang der Arbeit werden die Transkripte der Testamente für weitere Forschungen zur Verfügung gestellt. ; ger

    Bis in die Gegenwart hinein wird Lyrik in der Gattungspoetik immer wieder als Klangkunst charakterisiert. Zugleich liegt ein Großteil der historisch überlieferten Lyrikproduktion nur in Schriftform vor. In dieser Studie werden Vorschläge erarbeitet, wie die akustische bzw. auditive Dimension schriftlich überlieferter lyrischer Gebilde rekonstruiert werden kann. Sie lässt sich damit den Forschungsfeldern der Lyrikologie wie auch der historischen Klangwissenschaft zuordnen. Das vorgestellte Verfahren wird im Anschluss in drei literarhistorischen Modellstudien zu Johann Klaj, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock und Ludwig Tieck erprobt. Die Kapitel des historischen Teils können als Beiträge zu einer Sprachklanggeschichte der deutschsprachigen Lyrik gelesen werden, die bisher nicht vorliegt.In poetics up to the present day, poetry has repeatedly been characterized as a form of sound art. Yet a large part of the surviving lyrical production handed down from tradition is only available in written form. In this study, suggestions are made as to how the acoustic or auditory dimension of these lyrical formations can be reconstructed. It thus contributes to the research fields of both lyricology and historical sound science. The method presented here is subsequently tested in three literary-historical model studies on Johann Klaj, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and Ludwig Tieck. The chapters of the historical part can be read as contributions to a linguistic sound history of German-language poetry which has yet to be written.

    How do we learn what it means to be a man? And how do we learn to question what it means to be a man? This collection comprises a set of original interdisciplinary chapters on the linguistic and cultural representations of queer masculinities in a range of new and older media: television, film, online forums, news reporting, advertising and fiction. This innovative work examines new and emerging forms of gender hybridisation in relation to complex socialisation and immigration contexts including the role of EU institutions in ascertaining asylum seekers’ sexual orientation, and the European laws on gender policy. The book employs numerous analytical approaches including critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, multimodal analysis, literary criticism and anthropological and social research. The authors show how such texts can disrupt, question or complicate traditional notions of what it means to be a man, queering the idea that men possess fixed identities or desires, instead arguing that masculinity is constantly changing and negotiated through the cultural and political overlapping contexts in which it is regularly produced. These nuanced analyses will bring fresh insights for students and scholars of gender, masculinity and queer studies, linguistics, anthropology and semiotics

    The contributions in this volume focus on the Bayesian interpretation of natural languages, which is widely used in areas of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and computational linguistics. This is the first volume to take up topics in Bayesian Natural Language Interpretation and make proposals based on information theory, probability theory, and related fields. The methodologies offered here extend to the target semantic and pragmatic analyses of computational natural language interpretation. Bayesian approaches to natural language semantics and pragmatics are based on methods from signal processing and the causal Bayesian models pioneered by especially Pearl. In signal processing, the Bayesian method finds the most probable interpretation by finding the one that maximizes the product of the prior probability and the likelihood of the interpretation. It thus stresses the importance of a production model for interpretation as in Grice’s contributions to pragmatics or in interpretation by abduction.

    Bis in die Gegenwart hinein wird Lyrik in der Gattungspoetik immer wieder als Klangkunst charakterisiert. Zugleich liegt ein Großteil der historisch überlieferten Lyrikproduktion nur in Schriftform vor. In dieser Studie werden Vorschläge erarbeitet, wie die akustische bzw. auditive Dimension schriftlich überlieferter lyrischer Gebilde rekonstruiert werden kann. Sie lässt sich damit den Forschungsfeldern der Lyrikologie wie auch der historischen Klangwissenschaft zuordnen. Das vorgestellte Verfahren wird im Anschluss in drei literarhistorischen Modellstudien zu Johann Klaj, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock und Ludwig Tieck erprobt. Die Kapitel des historischen Teils können als Beiträge zu einer Sprachklanggeschichte der deutschsprachigen Lyrik gelesen werden, die bisher nicht vorliegt.In poetics up to the present day, poetry has repeatedly been characterized as a form of sound art. Yet a large part of the surviving lyrical production handed down from tradition is only available in written form. In this study, suggestions are made as to how the acoustic or auditory dimension of these lyrical formations can be reconstructed. It thus contributes to the research fields of both lyricology and historical sound science. The method presented here is subsequently tested in three literary-historical model studies on Johann Klaj, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and Ludwig Tieck. The chapters of the historical part can be read as contributions to a linguistic sound history of German-language poetry which has yet to be written

    Konstruktionsgrammatik wird zumeist mit Begriffen wie Nichtkompositionalität (Idiomatizität), Lexik-Grammatik-Kontinuum, Netzwerk von Konstruktionen verbunden. Unberücksichtigt bleibt dabei die Musterbasiertheit der Konstruktionen und damit sprachliche Tätigkeit als Operieren über schematischen Konstruktionen (Konstruktionsmustern). Operationen wie Instantiierung und Fusion sind selbstverständlich regelhaft, wenn auch nicht im Sinne des traditionellen Regelbegriffs, in dem Regel an invariante Gültigkeit gebunden wird, sondern von Regelhaftigkeit im prototypentheoretischen Sinne. In den Beiträgen dieses Bandes werden anhand konkreter sprachlicher Phänomene theoretische Fragen der Form-Funktionsbeziehung innerhalb von Konstruktionen und zwischen Konstruktionen sowie empirische Aspekte der Ermittlung, des Erwerbs, der Vermittlung und des zwischensprachlichen Vergleichs von Konstruktionen diskutiert.     Emotions permeate every aspect of our lives and not only provide us with invaluable information about our environment and the people in it, but also influence our perception of situations and events. Interestingly, this domain, so ubiquitous in our everyday lives, largely resists attempts at scientific definition. One reason for this could be that emotions rarely occur in isolation but are usually combined or embedded in other states of mind. Moreover, the experience of emotions may be influenced not only by culture but also by individual language. Analysis is further complicated by the fact that emotions are abstract and require complex linguistic coding to make an invisible emotional state of the speaker at least rudimentarily visible to the listener. For this reason, the present volume aims to investigate the perception, encoding, reception, and influence potential of emotions in context and across languages using different corpora. The following questions are central: To what extent do emotions influence our perception of events and facts? and To what extent can emotion concepts be defined language-specifically, but also universally, on the basis of our perception? Therefore, the eight contributions analyze emotions in different contexts and from different starting points to uncover the cognitive mechanisms underlying the perception and influence of emotion concepts. The first four papers focus primarily on emotional and sensory experiences and interactions that are set in motion when we are confronted with emotions, while the following four focus on the different facets of emotion across languages to show which emotion concepts are language-specific or universal, and thus contribute to a better understanding of this complex field

    ger: Die vorliegende Publikation ist einem Korpus von zwölf Testamenten katholischer, lutherischer und calvinischer Landesherren dreier Territorien des Heiligen Römischen Reiches aus dem Zeitraum des Konfessionellen Zeitalters gewidmet. Untersucht wird, welchen Einfluss die Konfession des Fürsten auf den Sprachgebrauch beim Abfassen seines Testamentes hatte. Dazu werden drei verschiedene sprachliche Ebenen (Textstruktur, Autoritätenreferenz, Graphie) in den Blick genommen. Bei der Einordnung der sprachlichen Befunde wird im Sinne der Historischen Pragmatik auch der jeweilige soziokulturelle Hintergrund berücksichtigt. Im Anhang der Arbeit werden die Transkripte der Testamente für weitere Forschungen zur Verfügung gestellt

    This volume shows how highly conscious Dickens was of words – of their meaning of course, and of the ideas they conjured up, but also of their very substance, texture, plasticity, visuality, and resonance, as well as their interactions with other words, and with their cultural environment. Each keyword is treated not as a semantic unit with a fixed meaning but rather as a flexible linguistic construct. Some keywords are just a word, a characteristic or even idiosyncratic lexical unit; some are treated as a load-bearing conceptual category or theme; some disintegrate into noise, complicating readers’ assumptions about what a keyword must be. The focus shifts from “word” at micro- to macro-levels of signification, at times denoting wider cultural usage. Dynamic relations, oppositions, correlations and overlappings result from these individualized reading journeys, creating unforeseen and rich systems of meaning
