    Christa Frateantonio follows a new line of research in this study of Pausanias` Periegesis, his historical and geographical description of Greece.Her underlying premise is that it is in fact concealed praise (or criticism) of cities, and supports this view by drawing attention to intention "riddles" in the Periegesis. These she expounds in detailed textual analyses, and explains the structures of the work, some of which are unexplained, as the result of rhetorical principles of description, which she considers in their relationship to the cultural context of the Second Sophistic.

    Eines der Hauptthemen Lukians ist die kritische Betrachtung der verschiedenen Phänomene des religiösen Lebens. Untersucht wurde in dieser Arbeit die lukianische Darstellungsweise der traditionellen Götterbilder sowie seine Rezeption der philosophischen Entwürfe der platonischen und stoischen Theologie. Im Wesentlichen geschieht die Kritik der religiösen Vorstellungen und Ideen als Auseinandersetzung mit den Formen und Modellen der literarischen Tradition: Lukian bleibt in der Substanz ein Literat, auch wenn er die Positionen der Philosophen kritisiert; seine Götter sind literarische Götter. An keiner Stelle seines umfangreichen Gesamtwerkes ist so etwas wie ein persönliches religiöses Gefühl zu belegen, wie u.a. eine Parallelanalyse der vergleichbaren Äußerungen des Zeitgenossen Galen zeigt. Eine Folge dieser Feststellung ist die Relativierung des herkömmlichen Bildes von Lukian als einem Revolutionär oder sogar Nihilisten. Angesichts der Kakophonie einander widersprechender philosophischer Meinungen und gegenstandsloser Überzeugungen ist für Lukian lediglich ein gemäßigter, ironischer Skeptizismus die einzig sinnvolle Konsequenz

    This book traces the transmission and reception of one of the most influential novels in Western literature. The Golden Ass, the only ancient Roman novel to survive in its entirety, tells of a young man changed into an ass by magic and his bawdy adventures and narrow escapes before the goddess Isis changes him back again. Its centerpiece is the famous story of Cupid and Psyche. Julia Gaisser follows Apuleius' racy tale from antiquity through the sixteenth century, tracing its journey from roll to codex in fourth-century Rome, into the medieval library of Monte Cassino, into the hands of Italian humanists, into print, and, finally, over the Alps and into translation in Spanish, French, German, and English. She demonstrates that the novel's reception was linked with Apuleius' reputation as a philosopher and the persona he projected in his works. She relates Apuleius and the Golden Ass to a diverse cast of important literary and historical figures--including Augustine, Fulgentius, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Bessarion, Boiardo, and Beroaldo. Paying equal attention to the novel's transmission (how it survived) and its reception (how it was interpreted), she places the work in its many different historical contexts, examining its representation in art, literary imitation, allegory, scholarly commentary, and translation. The volume contains several appendixes, including an annotated list of the manuscripts of the Golden Ass. This book is based on the author's Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College in 2000.

This new translation, structured by work groups, draws its justification from Wieland’s theory that major texts must be retranslated every 30 to 40 years in order to reflect changes in language.     In the Greek literature of the imperial period, Lucian of Samosata is surely one of the most versatile and creative figures. Thanks to his Dialogues he became one of the most famous and appreciated ancient Greek authors, and his fame could only be compared toPlato or Plutarch´s. Within Lucian´s works, Timon is referable to the author´s maturity and it is considered to beone of the best and most typical dialogues. Its modern success is evidentthrough several translations (such as Erasmus of Rotterdam´s version) as well as a great number of works which are inspired by it (for example The Life of Timon of Athens by Shakespeare or The Misanthrope by Molière). The appeal of this Dialogue lies mainly in the protagonist, Timon of Athens, a genuine misanthrope´s archetype, a powerful and interesting figure, capable of fascinating until today. Doch inwiefern lassen sich seine Texte auch in die paganen Gebildetendiskurse seiner Zeit einordnen?Matthias Becker geht dieser Frage auf breiter Quellenbasis nach, indem er erstmals das Lukasevangelium und die Apostelgeschichte zu den Schriften des Redners und philosophischen Wanderpredigers Dion von Prusa in Beziehung setzt. Mittels vergleichender Begriffs - und Motivanalysen, verschränkter Lektüren und eines heuristischen Leserkonstrukts arbeitet die Studie diskursive Überschneidungen hinsichtlich rhetorischer, ethischer und theologischer Themen heraus. So wird nicht nur ein neuer Blick auf die Inkulturation des lukanischen Christentums möglich. Die Partizipation an zeitgenössischen Bildungsdiskursen lässt vielmehr auch die Konturen einer Bildungsreligion erkennen, die sich im Doppelwerk ein frühes Denkmal setzt

Die Neuübersetzung, nach Werkgruppen gegliedert, bezieht ihre Berechtigung aus Wielands Feststellung, große Texte müssten alle 30 bis 40 Jahre neu übersetzt werden, um den Veränderungen der Sprache Rechnung zu tragen. Der erste Band enthält die im engeren Sinne rhetorischen Schriften Lukians The "long 19th century" saw the publication of three collected German translations of the works of Lucian of Samosata, those by Wieland (1788/89), Pauly (1827–1832), and Fischer (1886/87). This new translation, structured by work groups, draws its justification from Wieland’s theory that major texts must be retranslated every 30 to 40 years in order to reflect changes in language. Volume I contains Lucian’s specifically rhetorical writings

Die zum Teil bisher ungeklärten Strukturen des Werks, wie die Lückenhaftigkeit oder der kompilative Charakter der Periegese, führt Frateantonio auf verschiedene rhetorische Beschreibungsprinzipien zurück, die sie in ihrem Verhältnis zum kulturellen Kontext der Zweiten Sophistik untersucht. Das dominante Vorbild des Pausanias sieht die Autorin in dem hellenistischen Historiker Polemon von Ilion.

    In the Greek literature of the imperial period, Lucian of Samosata is surely one of the most versatile and creative figures. Thanks to his Dialogues he became one of the most famous and appreciated ancient Greek authors, and his fame could only be compared toPlato or Plutarch´s. Within Lucian´s works, Timon is referable to the author´s maturity and it is considered to beone of the best and most typical dialogues. Its modern success is evidentthrough several translations (such as Erasmus of Rotterdam´s version) as well as a great number of works which are inspired by it (for example The Life of Timon of Athens by Shakespeare or The Misanthrope by Molière). The appeal of this Dialogue lies mainly in the protagonist, Timon of Athens, a genuine misanthrope´s archetype, a powerful and interesting figure, capable of fascinating until today.     Die Studie wählt einen neuen Forschungsansatz, der von der Prämisse ausgeht, dass es sich in der Periegese des Pausanias um kaschiertes Städtelob (beziehungsweise Städtetadel) handelt. Die Autorin weist zur Begründung auf eine gezielte „Verrätselung“ der Periegese hin, die sie vor allem aus dem gattungsuntypischen Anfang und Schluss des Werks ableitet. Zentrales Kriterium der Städtewertungen ist die Religion, ein politischer Zusammenhang, der seit dem Hellenismus Tradition hat. Die zum Teil bisher ungeklärten Strukturen des Werks, wie die Lückenhaftigkeit oder der kompilative Charakter der Periegese, führt Frateantonio auf verschiedene rhetorische Beschreibungsprinzipien zurück, die sie in ihrem Verhältnis zum kulturellen Kontext der Zweiten Sophistik untersucht. Das dominante Vorbild des Pausanias sieht die Autorin in dem hellenistischen Historiker Polemon von Ilion.

    Der Verfasser des lukanischen Doppelwerks zählt unangefochten zu den gebildetsten neutestamentlichen Autoren. Doch inwiefern lassen sich seine Texte auch in die paganen Gebildetendiskurse seiner Zeit einordnen?Matthias Becker geht dieser Frage auf breiter Quellenbasis nach, indem er erstmals das Lukasevangelium und die Apostelgeschichte zu den Schriften des Redners und philosophischen Wanderpredigers Dion von Prusa in Beziehung setzt. Mittels vergleichender Begriffs - und Motivanalysen, verschränkter Lektüren und eines heuristischen Leserkonstrukts arbeitet die Studie diskursive Überschneidungen hinsichtlich rhetorischer, ethischer und theologischer Themen heraus. So wird nicht nur ein neuer Blick auf die Inkulturation des lukanischen Christentums möglich. Die Partizipation an zeitgenössischen Bildungsdiskursen lässt vielmehr auch die Konturen einer Bildungsreligion erkennen, die sich im Doppelwerk ein frühes Denkmal setzt
