In Beyond Identity , thirteen of Scotland’s best known poets reflect upon the theoretical, practical and political considerations involved in the act of writing. They furnish a unique guide to contemporary Scottish poetry, discussing a range of issues that include nationhood, education, language, religion, landscape, translation and identity. John Burnside, Robert Crawford, Douglas Dunn, Kathleen Jamie, Edwin Morgan, Kenneth White and others, together with such noted experimentalists as Frank Kuppner, Tom Leonard and Richard Price, explore questions about the relationship between social, economic and ecological realities and their poetic transformation. These interviews are set within the altered political context that followed from the re-establishment of a Scottish Parliament in 1999 and the potential of a renewed engagement with wider European culture

Drawn from papers given at an international conference held in 1999, this collection of essays offers new perspectives on Scots poetry of the late Middle Ages and early modern period. It includes essays on major poets, such as John Barbour, Robert Henryson, David Lyndsay and William Drummond; it also considers less famous writers such as John Bellenden and John Stewart of Baldynneis. Across these tightly focused essays, two themes predominate: the first is the imagined relationship between writer and reader, revealing a consistent concern with interpretation in Older Scots writing; the second is the place of literary influence, whether that too is Scots or from beyond Scotland’s borders. This volume will be of interest to all academics and students with an interest in Older Scots writing; it will also have some appeal for scholars working in late medieval and early modern literature more generally

Beside the Bard argues that Scottish poetry in the age of Burns reclaims not a single past, dominated and overwritten by the unitary national language of an elite ruling class, but a past that conceptualizes the Scottish nation in terms of local self-identification, linguistic multiplicity, cultural and religious difference, and transnational political and cultural affiliations. This fluid conception of the nation may accommodate a post-Union British self-identification, but it also recognizes the instrumental and historically contingent nature of "Britishness." Whether male or female, loyalist or radical, literati or autodidacts, poets such as Alexander Wilson, Carolina Olyphant, Robert Tannahill, and John Lapraik, among others, adamantly refuse to imagine a single nation, British or otherwise, instead preferring an open, polyvocal field, on which they can stage new national and personal formations and fight new revolutions. In this sense, "Scotland" is a revolutionary category, always subject to creative destruction and reformation. Published by Bucknell University Press.
