    This pioneering book teaches readers to use R within four core analytical areas applicable to the Humanities: networks, text, geospatial data, and images. This book is also designed to be a bridge: between quantitative and qualitative methods, individual and collaborative work, and the humanities and social scientists. Exploring Humanities Data Types with R does not presuppose background programming experience. Early chapters take readers from R set-up to exploratory data analysis (continuous and categorical data, multivariate analysis, and advanced graphics with emphasis on aesthetics and facility). Everything is hands-on: networks are explained using U.S. Supreme Court opinions, and low-level NLP methods are applied to short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The book’s data, code, appendix with 100 basic programming exercises and solutions, and dedicated website are valuable resources for readers. The methodology will have wide application in classrooms and self-study for the humanities, but also for use in linguistics, anthropology, and political science. Outside the classroom, this intersection of humanities and computing is particularly relevant for research and new modes of dissemination across archives, museums and libraries

In this book, Johnston and Mangat consider ways in which particular postcolonial and multicultural literary texts are able to provide a space of cultural mediation for readers from various backgrounds. The studies described in the five chapters of the book explore the spaces of convergence of identity, culture and literature with students and teachers in high school contexts and undergraduates in university settings. In each study, readers are responding to texts that are culturally distant from their own literary and experiential histories. An objective of each study was to consider the nature of the cultural locations of the reader and the text, and the interstitial spaces between these locations. The book interrogates readers’ attempts to negotiate cultural difference in literary contexts and questions how this negotiation requires reading practices traditionally ignored in North American classrooms. The book will offer educators at the secondary and post-secondary levels rich material to draw upon for a rethinking of the school curriculum and will be of interest to scholars of postcolonial and literary studies

At the same time, it shipped foreign Prisoners of War captured overseas to the US for imprisonment. Heartland reflects on the intersection between these two historic events through the story of a German-born widow and her family who take in two German Prisoners of War to work their family farm. But the German-American family and the POWs bond too well for the townspeople to accept, and the widow is arrested, interned and eventually suffers a breakdown, which tears her family apart. Based on true stories, Heartland illustrates what can happen when fear and prejudice pit neighbor against neighbor in times of war. A dramatic tale that grants insights into American history, Heartland is a winner of the Dayton Playhouse FutureFest and a runner-up for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival David Mark Cohen National Playwriting Award. "The story is shocking; for me it was revelatory," wrote theatre critic Pat Launer. "Deporting our own citizens? Who knew? But the play, while conveying historical information, is not in the slightest didactic. It's a family story, a tale of survival and acquiescence, of racism, of neighbor against neighbor.     In this book, Johnston and Mangat consider ways in which particular postcolonial and multicultural literary texts are able to provide a space of cultural mediation for readers from various backgrounds. The studies described in the five chapters of the book explore the spaces of convergence of identity, culture and literature with students and teachers in high school contexts and undergraduates in university settings. In each study, readers are responding to texts that are culturally distant from their own literary and experiential histories. An objective of each study was to consider the nature of the cultural locations of the reader and the text, and the interstitial spaces between these locations. The book interrogates readers{u2019} attempts to negotiate cultural difference in literary contexts and questions how this negotiation requires reading practices traditionally ignored in North American classrooms.     La culture numérique, comme on l'affirme aujourd'hui, est-elle vraiment le latin du XXIe siècle, à savoir le pivot essentiel pour l'instruction, la recherche avancée et la politique culturelle ? La technologie numérique exerce une influence profonde sur les sciences humaines. Aussi bien dans l'instruction de base que dans la recherche académique, elle n'offre pas seulement des outils au service des sciences humaines, mais tend à modifier leurs objectifs et leur langage, remettant en cause leur rôle dans la société et dans le système des savoirs. Au lieu d'être un moyen dont on peut tirer profit, la technologie numérique devient un but en soi ou se place au centre des réflexions sur la culture. Contenir cette dérive ne signifie pas être technophobe. Au contraire, il s'agit de chercher une alternative raisonnable à l'outrance numérique. Ce livre, écrit par un philologue contemporain qui s'est familiarisé avec les outils informatiques dès leur apparition, est une réflexion allant à contre-courant d'une vision purement technique de la culture, des langues et de l'histoire, proposant ici une nouvelle forme d'écologie culturelle.
