They immerse players in fascinating game-worlds and exciting experiences, often inviting them in various ways to reflect on the enacted events.Gerald Farca explores the genre of dystopian video games and the player's aesthetic response to their nightmarish game-worlds. Players, he argues, will gradually come to see similarities between the virtual dystopia and their own 'offline' environment, thus learning to stay wary of social and political developments.In his analysis, Farca draws from a variety of research fields, such as literary theory and game studies, combining them into a coherent theory of aesthetic response to dystopian games.

    This book examines dystopian fiction’s recent paradigm shift towards urban dystopias. It links the dystopian tradition with the literary history of the novel, spatio-philosophical concepts against the backdrop of the spatial turn, and systems-theory. Five dystopian novels are discussed in great detail: China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station (2000) and The City & The City (2009), City of Bohane (2011) by Kevin Barry, John Berger’s Lilac and Flag (1992), and Divided Kingdom (2005) by Rupert Thomson. The book includes chapters on the literary history of the dystopian tradition, the referential interplay of maps and literature, urban spaces in literature, borders and transgressions, and on systems-theory as a tool for charting dystopian fiction. The result is a detailed overview of how dystopian fiction constantly adapts to – and reflects on – the actual world.

    Die gigantische Explosion, die am 30. Juni 1908 weite Teile der sibirischen Tunguska-Region verwüstete, ist eine der verheerendsten Katastrophen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ihre Zerstörungskraft lässt sich jedoch nicht in Zahlen ausdrücken. Das katastrophische Potenzial des Tunguska-Ereignisses liegt vielmehr in seiner beharrlichen Rätselhaftigkeit. Das Fehlen einer haltbaren Erklärung erschüttert die moderne Wissensproduktion in ihren Grundfesten. Solvejg Nitzkes Analyse des Tunguska-Diskurses, der wissenschaftliche, parawissenschaftliche und literarische Texte umfasst, zeigt nicht nur die Grenzen zentraler Programme der Moderne auf, sondern öffnet nicht zuletzt auch den Blick für die Möglichkeiten kulturwissenschaftlicher Forschung. The gigantic explosion that laid waste to large parts of the Siberian Tunguska region on 30 June 1908 is one of the most devastating natural disasters of the 20th century. It's destructive power, however, cannot be expressed in numbers. Rather, the catastrophic potential of the Tunguska event lies more in its persistent mysteriousness. The lack of a cogent explanation shakes the modern production of knowledge to its very foundations. Solvejg Nitzke's analysis of the Tunguska discourse, which comprises academic, para-academic, and literary texts, does not just reveal the limits of the central conceptions of the modern era, but also opens up new possibilities for cultural studies research.

Anhand der Heftromanserie »Perry Rhodan« untersucht Mirjam Nast ein breites Spektrum von Lektürepraktiken: Basierend auf einem Spiralmodell des Serienlesens berücksichtigt sie auch zurückliegende Serienerfahrungen und arbeitet Lektüremodi heraus, die sich über längere Zeit des Serienlesens entwickelt haben. Im Anschluss an die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie versteht die Studie Lesen als ein Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Akteure, zu denen neben den Leser_innen auch die Serie mit ihren materiellen und ästhetischen Aspekten gehört.
