    Richard Wagners Reform des Musiktheaters beruht auf der neuen Auffassung von menschlicher Subjektivität, die in der Anthropologie, Philosophie und Literatur der deutschen Romantik entwickelt wird - so die These dieser interdisziplinär angelegten Studie, die nicht nur die Libretti Wagners in den Blick nimmt, sondern auch seine ästhetischen Schriften und Partituren. Sie zeigt, wie Wagner die in der Romantik entwickelte Dichotomie von Unbewusstem und Bewusstsein verarbeitete und zu einem neuen Musiktheater gelangte, das auf folgende Generationen großen Einfluss ausübte. Der Studie lässt Wagners Mythos-Begriff ebenso in einem neuen Licht erscheinen wie das intermediale Wechselspiel von Blick und Erzählung in den Musikdramen. Erstmals wird Wagners Konzeption zentraler anthropologischer Begriffe wie Identität, Erinnerung und Gedächtnis eingehend analysiert. Da die Untersuchung die romantischen Quellen auf breiter Basis einbezieht, kann sie bisher unbekannte Verbindungen zwischen der romantischen Literatur (Hoffmann, Kleist), Philosophie (Schelling) und Anthropologie (Schubert) und dem Werk Richard Wagners sichtbar machen

Zurzeit ist er DAAD-Professor an der University of Minnesota, USA.https://cla.umn.edu/about/directory/profile/singerr »Dem Mimen flicht die Nachwelt keine Kränze«: Im Widerspruch zu Schillers Behauptung entstanden seit dem 18. Jahrhundert zahlreiche Vers- und Prosatexte mit dem Anspruch, die »Kunst« großer Mimen zu vergegenwärtigen. Der Begriff »Mimen-Ekphrasis« stellt die Gattung einerseits in die rhetorische Tradition lebendiger ›Beschreibungskunst‹; andererseits wird sie als Sonderform von ›Kunstbeschreibung‹ im Zeichen der Diskussion von Wort-Bild-Beziehungen im 18. Jahrhundert interpretiert. Rhetorik, Intermedialitätsforschung und Theaterwissenschaft verbindend zeigt Rüdiger Singer, wie unter anderem Diderot, Fielding, Churchill, Lichtenberg, Schink, Böttiger, Goethe, W. v. Humboldt, Tieck, A. W. Schlegel, Hofmannsthal, Bahr, Rilke und D’Annunzio versuchten, ein »Bild« der Kunst von Schauspielern wie Burbage, Garrick, Iffland, Talma, Hendel-Schütz, Kainz und der Duse zu überliefern. “Posterity weaves no garlands to the mime”: This lament by Friedrich Schiller has been contradicted since the 18th century by a largely neglected body of texts striving to re-enact the “art” of great actors in the reader’s imagination. Labelled as “mime-ekphrasis”, these texts are situated both in the antique tradition of "vivid descriptions" and in the 18th century tradition of "descriptions of art" marked by a growing fascination with the intricate relations between the “Sister Arts” of poetry and painting. This study bridges intermedial, performance and visual culture studies to reveal how the scenic structure of ekphrasis interacts with the plurimedial character of acting, in English, German, and Italian ekphrases on Burbage, Garrick, Iffland, Talma, Kainz, Duse, et al.

    Angaben zur beteiligten Person Colombani: After graduating in 2016, Dr Greta Colombani is attending a MA degree in Euro-American Literatures and Philologies at the University of Pisa while being also a student at Scuola Normale Superiore. Serpent symbolism plays an important role in Keats’s rich animal imagery both on a quantitative level and on a qualitative one. Through images of dazzling, twisted, suffocating snakes Keats gives form to some of his most important ideas as well as anxieties about poetic creation. In particular, snakes convey the tension between the more unconscious and the more conscious elements of the creative psyche, which is reflected in the linguistic texture of the poems. Besides, serpent symbolism shows how Keats’s initial complete adhesion to the predominant Romantic view of the time was complicated and reinterpreted in highly personal terms. By recovering some Augustan notions, this young poet attempted a partial, problematic re-appropriation of the recent past Romanticism had utterly dismissed.

    Der vorliegende Band enthält Aufsätze von Günter Niggl aus den beiden letzten Jahrzehnten, darunter einige bisher unveröffentlichte Arbeiten. Er bringt als Auswahl seiner kleineren Schriften Studien zur deutschen Literatur vom Sturm und Drang über die Weimarer Klassik und Hölderlin bis zur Spätromantik und schließt mit einer Arbeit zur Rezeption dieser Umbruchzeit bei zwei Autoren der deutschen Gegenwartsliteratur. -- Verbunden sind diese Studien jedoch nicht allein durch ihren epochalen Zusammenhang, sondern vor allem durch einige daraus resultierende zeittypische Grundthemen: Probleme der literarischen Selbst- und Lebensdeutung, der Kunstautonomie und des Dichterberufs im Zeitalter des aufkommenden Individualismus; Wandlungen des Geschichts- und Poesieverständnisses; Spannungen zwischen Tradition und Originalität in der Literatur um 1800 einschließlich ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit der Antike; nicht zuletzt Formen der sprachlichen Säkularisation und die produktive Wirkung der religiösen Welt auf die Dichtung der Zeit. Diese häufig selbst wieder miteinander verwobenen Themen ergeben eine Reihe von Korrespondenzen und wiederholten Spiegelungen, die erst durch die hier dargebotene Sammlung der bisher verstreut publizierten Studien erkennbar werden.

    The poems "Nachhall" of Rolf K. Ligniez, here presented for the first time to a wider audience, are part of the tradition of escapist literature in Germany in the political dark years between 1933 and 1945. However the label "escapist" is rather vague and more coined to the socio-political circumstances. In fact we can detect in Ligniez' poetry elements of (neo-)romanticism and petrarchism which refer clearly to literary trends at the beginning of the century and further back in the 19th century. Besides this edition is also an attempt to reconstruct the life of the rather unknown writer Ligniez. With the support of the Literaturarchiv Marbach it was possible to present for the first time a letter of Ligniez to Max Kommerell, who was not only one of Ligniez' professors at university, but also his role model as far as cultural and especially literary life is concerned. Kommerell, once secretary of Stefan George, and member of the famous George-circle, was one of those who tried to combine scientific research and career with literary production, always zealous to pass the fascination for literature to the next generation. Ligniez was one of his successors, unable to unfold the same productivity due to his early death in war

    Richard Wagners Reform des Musiktheaters beruht auf der neuen Auffassung von menschlicher Subjektivität, die in der Anthropologie, Philosophie und Literatur der deutschen Romantik entwickelt wird - so die These dieser interdisziplinär angelegten Studie, die nicht nur die Libretti Wagners in den Blick nimmt, sondern auch seine ästhetischen Schriften und Partituren. Sie zeigt, wie Wagner die in der Romantik entwickelte Dichotomie von Unbewusstem und Bewusstsein verarbeitete und zu einem neuen Musiktheater gelangte, das auf folgende Generationen großen Einfluss ausübte. Der Studie lässt Wagners Mythos-Begriff ebenso in einem neuen Licht erscheinen wie das intermediale Wechselspiel von Blick und Erzählung in den Musikdramen. Erstmals wird Wagners Konzeption zentraler anthropologischer Begriffe wie Identität, Erinnerung und Gedächtnis eingehend analysiert. Da die Untersuchung die romantischen Quellen auf breiter Basis einbezieht, kann sie bisher unbekannte Verbindungen zwischen der romantischen Literatur (Hoffmann, Kleist), Philosophie (Schelling) und Anthropologie (Schubert) und dem Werk Richard Wagners sichtbar machen
